Synopsis¶
In this episode of the 40 and 20 Watch Clicker Podcast, hosts Andrew and Everett discuss recent watch news and releases. They cover Buzz Aldrin's watches coming up for auction at Sotheby's, including a non-working Omega X33 estimated at $4,000-6,000. The hosts express excitement over the new limited edition Moon Swatch Mission to the Moon 1969, featuring 11 grams of 18-karat moonshine gold and priced at $570 based on 1969 gold prices, though they humorously discover their critical podcast comments about Omega disqualify them from purchasing one.
Other watches discussed include Citizen's new affordable ProMaster Dive watch at $450, Yema's Navy Graf Barracuda with forged carbon dial developed with the French Navy, and a Notice/Raven collaboration trail tracker GMT. They also examine Christopher Ward's unusual collaboration with dial artist Chris Alexander featuring hand-painted skeletonized movements, Doxa's gray titanium Clive Cussler limited edition, and Benjamin James's Deerhurst regulator watch. The episode concludes with Everett sharing his enthusiasm for purchasing American-made Wright Tool Company wrenches from Harry J. Epstein tool company, and Andrew recommending Netflix's "The Hawk" starring Will Ferrell as nostalgic millennial comfort viewing.

| Everett | Hello, fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to 40 and 20, the Watch Glicker Podcast with your hosts Andrew and my good friend Everett. Here we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Everett, how are you? I'm doing well. I'm doing well. We do have a fan on. I'm gonna go I'm gonna go take care of that. I like that. I like that I get it. No, I'm doing really well. It's been it's been an interesting week. Um I uh had a number of cases that were getting ready to go to trial. So I had a trial at the end of this month and then I had another trial set for about two weeks into next month. Um one of them was one of them was gonna be pretty extensive and the other one was more straightforward but, they both settled like in the last two days. Because they knew the big dog was coming. Yeah, no, I don't I don't think that's had any uh I don't think that had any part of the settlement. Um but they did both settle uh and they both of them kind of felt like these probably aren't gonna settle. So that uh that was big. And then I've been spent you know, I spent all day working on sort of putting together settlement agreements until like Like two minutes before |
| Andrew | I mean you had sufficient time |
| Everett | to ignore my call. Yeah, yeah. Well, I was uh you know, when you when you're working and you kind of like |
| Andrew | see my name pop up and put your phone to |
| Everett | the side and you're |
| Andrew | Maybe somebody ignored it. Nope. |
| Everett | It was sitting on the table. I just didn't just didn't get it. So |
| Andrew | sorry, buddy. Um I mean |
| Everett | if I'd seen it, I probably would have ignored it, but |
| Andrew | but okay. That makes sense. |
| Everett | What the shit was that? Uh uh yeah, so uh yeah, that's that's always uh that's always I don't know, it's it's like partially deflating and partially like kind of r relieving. I don't know. Uh but I'm good. Andrew, how are |
| Andrew | you? I'm good. Just chugging |
| Everett | along. I'm you know. Made some pasta today. I got a lodge uh enamel cast iron because I saw |
| Andrew | it at the store and I was like, you know what, I want it enamel. 45 |
| Everett | bucks or whatever. Yeah, I want an enamel |
| Andrew | cast iron Dutch oven. Uh, because I want to try it. Like, I want to see if I'm actually going to use it before I drop the 500 bucks on a like ruse, you know? |
| Everett | Sure. And that's like I feel |
| Andrew | like a reasonable entry into it because I don't know if I'm gonna use it. Uh so I made some braised beef ragu today and some fresh pasta. |
| Everett | Nice. It was delightful. |
| Andrew | Uh, problem is it makes it hard for the air conditioning to keep up when you're running uh your oven, even at just 250. Yeah. What kind of beef did you do? Did you |
| Everett | do that? Just a chuck? A little roast? Yeah, I just |
| Andrew | did a chuck roast, seared it, and threw |
| Everett | it in there with all the the mirepoix |
| Andrew | plus shallots and the fixeds gallic and what else I put in there. I think that was it. Bunch of fresh herbs because I had those in the fridge. It was good. It was delightful actually. Nice. Yeah. Just simmered for I don't know, six or |
| Everett | seven hours and some pepperdelly |
| Andrew | pasta. Fuck. It was good. I went down a deep rabbit hole of uh pasta shapes and making them today. I probably watched two and a half hours of YouTube |
| Everett | of Oh yeah of pasta shape |
| Andrew | making uh because i was thinking i was gonna make uh tortellitium brodo for you make the pasta |
| Everett | yeah okay nice it's super |
| Andrew | easy. Oh, it's easy to make pasta but it,'s |
| Everett | it it's it requires some equipment. It's an extra step for sure. |
| Andrew | It's an extra step. But I I liken it to like totino's is good in the oven, but it's great deep fried. |
| Everett | Andrew, did you uh do you use like an Atlas press or do you use like a kitchen aid attachment? |
| Andrew | I use a kitchen, just the kitchen aid shooter. |
| Everett | Yeah. Uh I was |
| Andrew | gonna make tortellini and then I was like, uh I don't feel like doing that today. Yeah, that's |
| Everett | a lot of work. Yeah Yeah, it |
| Andrew | is it's just a a lot of work. It's just like to make ten tortellini is ten tortellini. It's not just cutting cutting out a sheet of pasta. But uh yeah, making fresh pasta is the way. It it honestly does not take that much longer than dried pasta. |
| Everett | Yeah. It it it objectively does in |
| Andrew | that it needs to rest for like a half an hour in the fridge. But outside of that, like the the timing on it, the actual |
| Everett | depending on what kind of pasta you can make for sure. But just |
| Andrew | hand cut pasta, like just paperdale or taglatelli, or you know, take your pick of flat noodles. |
| Everett | Yeah. The the actual working |
| Andrew | period is pretty short. It's probably like 12 minutes. Maybe 15. |
| Everett | Depending on the pasta, you know, spaghetti. |
| Andrew | It needs an extruder, but like well. |
| Everett | You can you can do it non extruded, but And I was gonna |
| Everett | say too, I mean some pasta you really |
| Everett | you want some bite that you can't get with a fresh pasta, it's gotta be dried before you can get that al dente, you know, fresh pasta. You're never it's always gonna be pretty soft, which sometimes that's good, especially with the thicker pasta. But |
| Andrew | a little thicker though, you get that good chew by like some bounce to it. Well that's fun. Um yeah I spent a lot of time in the YouTube rabbit hole. And I'm not uh |
| Everett | I'm better off for it, I think. I learned |
| Andrew | a lot today. Well, I'll tell you, I'm |
| Everett | a guy who has spent some time at Down Rabbit |
| Andrew | Holes. Uh so I also went to St. Vinny's, which is our local, like one of our local uh donation sale places. Yeah, St. Vincent de Paul. And I |
| Everett | left with like 10 new cookbooks. |
| Everett | Oh wow. It's not why I went. Uh |
| Andrew | but I walked through their cookbook aisle and I was like, oh, you're coming home with me. And you're coming home with me. Like some interesting like old cookbooks. |
| Everett | And you probably spent all of about 30 bucks. |
| Andrew | 30 bucks on 10 cookbooks, yeah. Uh I bought a uh I b I also bought the Fodors travel guide for London from twenty twenty five. That was I think when you buy them new, they're like thirty bucks. Nice. I got it for two ninety nine. |
| Everett | Sick. Yeah. Yeah. So uh I made |
| Andrew | out like a bandit at Saint Vincent de Paul, and now I sort of understand people's thrifting obsession. |
| Everett | Oh yeah, no, the it it can be by it can be catching for sure. |
| Andrew | As I was walking in, there was a guy leaving with like an armload of VHS tapes. I didn't see what the titles were, but he was like he was carrying a beach ball of VHS tapes. |
| Everett | Interesting. No, I think thrifting like so many things, it it it used to be different than it is now, but it's still fun. It still can't be |
| Everett | fun. Yeah, I mean more quickwicks |
| Andrew | is more better. The last thing I thrifted Andrew |
| Everett | was a motorcycle. Uh yes, technically, I guess |
| Everett | that wasn't thrifted, but the last thing I got |
| Everett | at a thrift store was |
| Andrew | uh it was a |
| Everett | it's a John W. Nordstrom |
| Everett | cashmere like camel |
| Andrew | hair colored cashmere blazer |
| Everett | that just fits me like |
| Andrew | a glove. And uh |
| Everett | actually I've lost a little weight, so it might not fit as well right now. But I like was w |
| Everett | walking through and I I saw it on the rack. You know how you just you know |
| Everett | you can see a good fabric as |
| Everett | you're on the rack. Mm-hmm. I was like, |
| Andrew | oh that looks like a nice fabric. And then I, |
| Everett | you know, kind of grab it and I pull it open and I'm like, oh, this is a really nice jacket. It was probably, you know, ten, fifteen years old. Uh, but it was in fantastic shape, and then I put it on and it was just like and uh yeah, I paid seven bucks for that for that jacket. And then the first time I wore it, someone was like, one of my coworkers was like, that is a really nice jacket. I was like, and it was a guy who knows jackets too. |
| Andrew | Nailed it. Yeah. I uh what actually thought made me think |
| Everett | to go to St. Vinny's was I was just scrolling Reddit and saw |
| Andrew | uh like a sports memorabilia post |
| Everett | that showed a dude who had gotten a Dakota Prue Cop who was a backup quarterback at U of O like seven years ago, eight years ago. But a red hat with the duck logo on it. Yeah, |
| Everett | good quarterback hat. He found one of |
| Everett | those. I saw that post on Reddit. Yeah, he found one of those at a at a thrift shop and I was like, oh that wouldn't be a terrible place to go look. And then some kid in Portland just got a uh a Wilt Chamberlain warm-up jacket out of a goodwill. |
| Andrew | No shit. Yeah. That's cool. He was like, he was |
| Everett | like, I I was looking at the dimensions of it and I realized like this is Wilt. This is the biggest guy on the |
| Andrew | team. And then he got it verified and |
| Everett | he's going to make make some money off of uh Wilt Chamberlain warm-up jacket from whenever Wilt played, but he found it at a good will. |
| Everett | Cool. Yeah. Well, Andrew, do you want |
| Andrew | to get started talking about watches? We are |
| Everett | since we're talking about secondhand shit, uh I want to bring to everyone's attention the fact that a significant amount of Buzz Aldrin's watches are going to come up for auction at Sotheby's. |
| Everett | In case you want to get in on the bidding. |
| Everett | Uh well you know what though some of them are and obviously his his famous Apollo watch is in probably um an arms dealer's personal collection because it was |
| Andrew | lost. Lost |
| Everett | in transit to the Smithsonian. It was stolen by the mafia and is certainly |
| Andrew | in a in a bad guy's Bright Lane collection. |
| Everett | But among those watches is his the speedmaster replacement that he got from the 90s that he wore a bunch. The one that actually interested me the most is his X33, which is either government or NASA issued, and you can know that because the caseback is blank, which is a something that Omega does for uh NASA and military contracts so the case back can be custom engraved. And the anticipated sale price on this is only four to six thousand dollars. |
| Everett | Yeah, right. But it's because it's not |
| Andrew | in it's not currently in working condition |
| Everett | so it could be as easy as a battery swap or it could |
| Andrew | be uh you you're spending six |
| Everett | thousand dollars just to have Buzz Aldrin's |
| Andrew | watch. Uh some other really cool |
| Everett | stuff. I you know I, I really like these um when these auction lots come up from people like Buzz Aldrin |
| Andrew | who aren't exactly watch people. They're |
| Everett | just really famous and get like all kinds of free shit. There's like a Toy Story watch in involved in this, like a commemorative watch from Aldrin Elementary, just weird stuff. |
| Andrew | Uh, but also like some really |
| Everett | historically important stuff that aren't his moon watch. Um, |
| Andrew | so there's a handful of Buzz Aldrin's watch |
| Everett | com ising up for sale, and if you want to get in on it, uh, |
| Andrew | you know, you could get a broken X33 |
| Everett | or you could get a fully functional X33 that just needs a new battery. |
| Andrew | Yeah. Nice. Yeah. There is, yeah, |
| Everett | there's a n uh nineteen nineties Speedy Professional with an eight sixty one in it that they say is gonna go for eight thousand to twelve thousand, but I bet it |
| Andrew | it goes for twenty easy. Uh 'cause that's his |
| Everett | that's the Speedmaster he got in the nineties and when his watch you know went missing. |
| Everett | Yeah. For all of these, there's someone with more money than you that's gonna be willing to pay more money than you. So |
| Everett | I wonder if Buzz is gonna buy any of his |
| Andrew | own watches. This JLC uh |
| Everett | shark deep-sea chronograph is pretty is pretty dope too. |
| Everett | It it it is. Oh |
| Andrew | dang it. What's that? |
| Everett | I accidentally grouped I |
| Everett | yeah, the estimate on the on the JLC is ten thousand to twenty. I bet it goes for fifty. But uh yeah, all of these will go for a lot of money. |
| Andrew | The whole I mean they they all will, because it he's a historic figure, |
| Everett | right? He's the second human to set his feet on the moon. |
| Andrew | His little Tootsies. Yeah, his his little Tootsies |
| Everett | have have left its footprints on the moon. And uh he he was immediately immortalized. Like the anything that guy has touched for the last 70, 50 years is is just gold, right? He's got the Midas touch. |
| Andrew | Yeah. Do we know when |
| Everett | he what watch he was wearing when he punched |
| Andrew | that flat earther? Oh |
| Everett | gosh. I would get irresponsible |
| Everett | for that watch. Um |
| Andrew | so uh speaking of moon watches, there was a new moon |
| Everett | swatch that was released |
| Andrew | this week. This is a this is the |
| Everett | first one I've liked in a long time, and I really do like this one. |
| Everett | Well, yeah, this is pretty cool. So this is actually a collaboration um between uh between Omega and Swatch. |
| Andrew | What and what |
| Everett | they're calling this is the mission |
| Andrew | to the moon nineteen sixty w nineteen |
| Everett | sixty-nine moon swatch uh which is a limited edition to one thousand nine |
| Andrew | hundred and sixty nine pieces. You know |
| Everett | it's the same forward and backward? Uh |
| Everett | you have to like rotate it though, right? Yeah, |
| Everett | like the Illuminati symbol. Um |
| Andrew | Yeah, so this one's pretty |
| Everett | cool. So first it is black and gold, which are fantastic color combinations. Uh it's the most limited moon swatch yet. |
| Everett | Yes. With just a you know just a hair under two thousand. |
| Everett | Uh which which for a moonswatch |
| Everett | is actually a pretty limited amount. And it's |
| Andrew | a pretty interesting execution of |
| Everett | the deal. So obviously to celebrate the Apollo 11's moon landing, which was in 1969. And it |
| Everett | comes in it comes with quite a bit of 18 karat moonshine gold. So |
| Everett | now we are putting |
| Andrew | some value in the We are |
| Everett | certainly jumping aquatic |
| Everett | animals, if not sharks, at this point. Uh |
| Everett | and it's got a lot of gold. Uh dials, hands, |
| Everett | pushers, crown, all in moonshine gold. Eleven grams total. I think that's a metric |
| Everett | fuck ton for the price that you're paying on it. |
| Andrew | They might be taking a loss here. |
| Everett | Um we've got you know bioceramic |
| Everett | case and a matte black uh to go sort of alongside the gold. It is really a pretty delightful looking watch. We've got a black strap on it and each piece is numbered. |
| Everett | From from the pictures, it looks like the inside of the strap is textured to be like the surface of the moon. |
| Andrew | Yeah. Right? Yeah. That's right. |
| Everett | Is I mean I I I haven't I don't see anything commenting on that, but that's yeah, no, I th what I'm think I'm seeing here. |
| Andrew | Yeah, I th I think you might be right. |
| Everett | Um we have so what they say yeah, |
| Everett | the melt value of the of the gold in this watch is a $1058 uh but |
| Everett | swatch is pricing |
| Everett | this based on the price of gold on the day of Apollo 11's landing. So |
| Everett | that means that you can get this for |
| Everett | $570. And when I |
| Everett | say you can get this, I am |
| Everett | going to incorporate a healthy a healthy uh dose of finger quotes because |
| Everett | I don't think you can get this. |
| Everett | If anybody has any experience writing code to like buy things quickly. Like if you've ever bought a Smiths directly from Smith's because you built your Bybot, uh, hit me up because I I would I'd Bybot this watch, I think. |
| Everett | There are in order to get one, |
| Everett | you have to fill out what they're calling an |
| Andrew | electronic swatch timepiece |
| Everett | application or an ESTA, which is funny, |
| Andrew | uh, which runs |
| Everett | from right now through July |
| Everett | 21st. Uh, |
| Everett | and you get in a |
| Everett | digital line on this. Uh, it's a moonswatch. It's black and gold. It's got a bucket load of gold. They're gonna be very hard to get. The resale value on these is gonna be astronomical. |
| Everett | Oh, these are gonna be absurd. |
| Andrew | I'm I'm currently applying. |
| Everett | Okay. Oh, good for you. Good |
| Everett | for you. Um Yeah, |
| Everett | it's an investment. This is this |
| Everett | is uh this is an asset. Right. |
| Everett | I maybe, yeah. I don't I don't know. This is a weird one. This is a this is one of those where if you happen |
| Andrew | upon one or you get one, um, you're really getting |
| Everett | something pretty special. Uh these are |
| Everett | I was born on a Saturday. Sweet. |
| Andrew | Yeah. S someone in in the comments on the |
| Everett | Hodinkee website said this is you know ten out of ten rage bait. |
| Everett | It it got me uh and I |
| Everett | think that's I think that's fair. I I mean this is the type of watch that people are gonna have feelings about. Um |
| Everett | If I get one, uh we're gonna have to go to Las Vegas uh to get it. Okay. No. |
| Everett | They asked you that question? Yeah. So first |
| Everett | question was have you ever gifted a golden tableclock to a president? Uh have you ever spoken badly about the moon on social media? No. I have spoken badly about Moon Swatch, but not. Have you ever spoken badly about Omega? Or so well, I'm out. We just speak. Have you ever spoken badly about Omega or Swatch on social media? And the answer is a resounding yes. We just have an |
| Everett | episode titled We Hate Omega. I |
| Everett | am now I'm not I'm not making that up. |
| Everett | You're not gonna win this one. I am I am |
| Everett | I am now disqualified and have ceased my attempts to get in a digital line. But if anybody who does not hate Omega the way that we hate the way Omega behaves and hasn't opined publicly on such matters, |
| Everett | oh man. Uh |
| Everett | I never would have thought that this show would |
| Everett | have a negative input. We have ramifications. We |
| Andrew | have ramifications. You know, you |
| Everett | stand by your words. I |
| Andrew | I take Yeah, no, I take nothing |
| Everett | back. I feel like I'm pretty okay with everything I've ever said on the show. Some shit's been questionable, but you know, I generally feel pretty okay. |
| Everett | It's like they made that question for us. I |
| Everett | it's they did. |
| Everett | Like these motherfuckers. Yeah, the and and it w and the best part would be when you won and then they were like, oh we see you light on your application. |
| Everett | And then you don't so when I uh when I was selling beer, I was I worked for Anheuser Busch and I some of you may recall this, but I one of our competitor distributors uh sold Keystone and they were doing a text to win uh drift boat, there the only requirements were that you didn't work for any affiliates. And what I knew then, and and this is again, uh, you know, some industry knowledge, if you see a text to win |
| Andrew | offer, text |
| Everett | it, the amount of responses that come into text to win sweepstakes, especially local ones, are so few. We had under a hundred text-win applicants for a big ass tragir. The odds are really good. |
| Andrew | Yeah. And for ones that last a while, |
| Everett | you can typically enter your name every day. Wholly different. But if you see Text to Wins based off like from local entities, get in on it because nobody's doing it. |
| Andrew | Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That was a good boat. |
| Everett | It was a good boat. You sold it. I sold it for market |
| Andrew | value. Like brand new market value. 12,000 bucks or something, right? |
| Everett | Uh five. Okay. Yeah. You |
| Andrew | sold that to Tony, you did. Yeah. Yeah. So I still have access to it. I can still |
| Everett | I can still text Tony and be like, hey, like let's |
| Everett | go, like, let's float the river. And he'll be like, yeah, let's ride. |
| Everett | Uh what's next, Andrew? |
| Everett | Oh, next for me. Um gosh, we already c oh let's let's let's keep it in the vein of uh limited editions |
| Andrew | for for the time being. Uh the |
| Everett | new Doxa Sub 300 TI 5 Clive Clive Custler Limited edition. Um I'm really pleasantly surprised by this Clive Custler edition. So many of them are like really big and like a little weird or have |
| Everett | oddly novelties to like the heavy |
| Everett | patent patina thing for these. Yeah, they've like |
| Everett | the a map dial, a you know, throw all of them in a dryer together for a few days and just like see how they come out. This is not that. This is a fantastic gray on grade 5 titanium, uh, color match date wheel, Cosk certified, like just all the things that you want, and it's really, really good. It only comes on the rubber |
| Everett | strap with a pin buckle. |
| Everett | Uh only 300 of them, 330 and 90 bucks. |
| Andrew | So you know, still they're limited edition pricing model, |
| Everett | right? But this is good. This is a good Clive Custler. |
| Andrew | Yeah, so they've got a like a dual |
| Everett | level dial |
| Andrew | here, which are both in titanium, which |
| Everett | is a novelty, um, but very cool. So two |
| Andrew | titanium discs sitting on top of one |
| Everett | another with the cutouts being laser engraved that gives you sort of a negative space on the dial to form the hour markers, unlike the typical applied up hour markers they use. Uh it gives it sort of a |
| Everett | I don't know really flat like |
| Andrew | like kind of an aircraft vibe. Kind of |
| Everett | instrumenty. Yeah, instrument vibe. |
| Andrew | Um a a bit more technical |
| Everett | looking than I think a lot of these things often |
| Andrew | um uh th then they often |
| Everett | come across uh it it definitely has like a bit of like oomph to it |
| Andrew | that I think oftentimes the |
| Everett | Doxa doesn't have much less the um you know last year they had the 700 the 750T Clive Custler edition, which I I did like because I do like that watch. Because |
| Andrew | it's also the precursor to the seven fifty |
| Everett | T coming out. Yeah, that's right. So |
| Everett | this is a sub three hundred in |
| Andrew | grade five titanium and it's it's really, really lovely. |
| Everett | It's a shame that there's only three hundred of them. |
| Everett | Yeah, that's right. There's there's not very many of |
| Andrew | these. Because this gray doesn't exist in the |
| Everett | DOX ecosystem. I suspect |
| Andrew | these will be just slightly easier to come by than the 1969 moonswatch. Uh |
| Everett | and because they don't care if you've uh talked shit about them before. |
| Everett | That's right. You don't have to you don't have to pledge allegiance. I |
| Everett | cannot believe that I just got edged out because of my journalistic uh freedoms as an American. That's a that feels like a ooh, I need a new, I need a constitutional lawyer. |
| Everett | Um what I do uh I I think that |
| Andrew | the bezel on this guy |
| Everett | is it's either a polished |
| Andrew | titanium or it's in stainless, |
| Everett | but it it provides a really nice contrast between the mid-case and the bezel, that I find really compelling. Also, the color matched date wheel. It's a it |
| Everett | looks really good. It looks really good. Because it's |
| Everett | got red font on it, uh, or |
| Everett | orange font, so it color matches the minute hand and the orange and the bezel. |
| Andrew | Yeah, and it matches the decompression. This is a great watch. |
| Everett | Yeah, I I gosh, |
| Everett | I would get another Doxa if this was a |
| Everett | a all the time color way. |
| Everett | And they'll fly. I I mean it's not like these are gonna be widely like super super available, but um it |
| Everett | it But I don't wanna pay thirty three hundred bucks for it. Like I wanna pay two thousand dollars for it. Well, that seems fair. |
| Andrew | Have you ever heard of the Rolling Stones? |
| Everett | Yeah, but I need it to be $2,000. |
| Andrew | You can't. You can't always |
| Everett | get a 2000. Um That's |
| Andrew | what they said, right? The But you get what |
| Everett | you need. The citizen? |
| Everett | Citizen? Citizens released |
| Andrew | a new Citizen ProMaster Dive, |
| Everett | and it is likely the |
| Andrew | most boring, most stable I like that word for this release. This is a very |
| Everett | stable safe. |
| Everett | Safe feels more pejorative, |
| Andrew | but that's fair. Um yeah, |
| Everett | they've released a new ProMaster |
| Everett | EcoDrive dive watch, and it is I mean, |
| Everett | I almost don't even know what to tell you about |
| Andrew | this. And they didn't citizen it. That's what you can tell them. |
| Everett | It's a 40.6mm case. It's 11.5 thick, 200 meters of water resistance. Like it they didn't ruin it. |
| Andrew | They've done nothing bad here. Everything is good. It does have a the one thing that you may not notice if you if you look at this very quickly is that it has so they are aluminum bezel inserts and a PVD bezel that sits on top of a brushed silver |
| Everett | steel case. |
| Andrew | And it provides just but |
| Everett | you can't really see that it's a PVD, a black PVD |
| Andrew | bezel, uh until you sort of like because the way the light plays, like from the top down, it's a anyway. |
| Everett | It's a really nice look. Um great |
| Andrew | size on these great dimensions, 300 meters of water resistance. Two. Two. I swear it was 300. Am I just |
| Everett | making things up? Okay. Well, 200 meters |
| Everett | of water resistance. Um, they don't come on |
| Andrew | a bracelet, at least at this point. I |
| Everett | don't think they will. There were four of |
| Everett | these released in Japan, three of these released in the US. A white dial, a with black bezel, a black dial with blackbezzel, and blue on blue in the US that you can get. Um |
| Everett | What's the JDM? I don't |
| Everett | know what it is. I was try trying to find it and I |
| Everett | couldn't find it. Um probably |
| Everett | red or something, knowing citizen, but um |
| Everett | man, I'll tell you, super |
| Everett | boring and just everything |
| Everett | that I want. Great. $450 |
| Everett | on these. And based |
| Everett | on citizens' pricing models, these |
| Everett | will probably actually retail for 350 Yeah, maybe |
| Everett | 375. Yeah. 375 |
| Everett | somewhere in that range. Um on |
| Everett | Joma for 350, 375 all day or day. |
| Everett | And gosh, I'll tell you, if you really just |
| Andrew | want a no-shit grab and go, |
| Everett | truly grab and grow, grab and go |
| Everett | quartz watch, |
| Everett | I I think you'd be hard pressed to do a lot better than this. You know, we we talk a little bit about well |
| Everett | The only wrinkle is with with EcoDrive you do have to wear it with some kind of frequency. It they they've improved Eco D |
| Everett | It least has to be exposed to sunlight. |
| Everett | To sunlight. They've improved the eco drive such that the ambient light of a room or even lights, like overhead lights, will a f offer some charge, but it it really needs to get some sunlight from time to time to to regen. |
| Everett | But but of course this is the this |
| Andrew | is one of the new uh one of the new versions |
| Everett | of EcoDrive movement so |
| Andrew | it's the E118. So you're you're gonna have um you're gonna have |
| Everett | a a pretty trouble free as long as it's getting just a little bit of sunlight. Oh |
| Andrew | Andrew, the the JDM version is |
| Everett | black dial orange bezel insert orange strap. |
| Everett | That's pretty pretty cool. Yeah. I I gotta dig my avion out for you. It's been sitting in the window for years. |
| Everett | Okay. It's got some sun bleaching and it looks |
| Everett | sexy. Nice. It it might it it's gonna find its way into a a more uh frequent position in the in the watch wearing. |
| Everett | I like that. What is what what what was the uh resultant color? |
| Everett | Uh so the orange has kind of faded out. It's not like it it's not it's just not bright orange anymore. It's a little bit softer. That gray dial is kind of ghosty. Uh and it's not dust on the on the crystal, either I checked. I did give it a lick and a and a wipe. Shouldn't lick it in case it's dusty, but I did get a lick and a wipe. |
| Everett | Yeah. Cool. Yeah. |
| Everett | I actually I don't know where it is. I didn't see it today when I was moving through watches, but um |
| Everett | What's new, sir? Ooh, new |
| Andrew | for me. Let's talk |
| Everett | about hmm. Yemma. Always. Just just always always doing it right. So Yemma has released a new Navy Graft Barracuda CMM 2.20 in limited edition, that was uh developed with the French Navy. Um, when I first read that, it like it seemed odd |
| Andrew | to me. I France |
| Everett | obviously has a navy, it just |
| Andrew | never has entered |
| Everett | into my mind that there would be that there there's a French Navy. Sure. Post, you know, American Revolution. So that's a a little bit of a of a confession that I have that I just like, wow, French, why would they have a navy? Well, obviously they have a navy. Uh so what we have here is a forged carbon dial, which is super cool. It is so neat. I think last time we talked about forged carbon, I uh did some research into what forged carbon is. It is exactly just forged carbon. Yeah. It's there's I I I don't know, I figured it would be something different than like an actual metallurgy practice, but it nope, it is just forged carbon. |
| Everett | It's just heat and pressure to Yep. |
| Everett | To get that get these designs and these shapes. So applied hour markers, stainless steel finished. Uh the |
| Andrew | CMM to point two to point to |
| Everett | Movement uh only making four hundred pieces of them. But this thing is just neat, right? It it I'm aside from being a partnership with the French Navy, this would be a cool just limited release on its own. It's got this really neat uh red see-through case back that says uh Forces South Marines and Marine Nationale, which I think is uh French naval forces and the French Navy. Um but you know, I don't I don't speak French. I don't parlez vous. Um |
| Everett | You mean parlez bows. Yeah, |
| Everett | yeah, you're right. Gosh, I just I can't do anything right today. But but it's a navy graph, right? But with a with cool new touches, cool new flares, a uh countdown timer from your uh gosh where are we at? The eight o'clock to the twelve o'clock. Just cool details, cool watch. Like I I I just like looking at it. That's all I want to say. I just like the way it's designed. And there's |
| Andrew | it's like sub-ten millimeters without the crystal |
| Everett | too. I don't know if you mentioned that. No, I forgot to mention |
| Everett | that. Yeah, it's the the dimensions on this |
| Everett | are fantastic. All of the CMM movements. Yemma, |
| Andrew | I think the reason Yemma stole my |
| Everett | heart, I'll speak for myself, Andrew, but I assume you're on sort of the same uh plane. Is |
| Andrew | that when they went in-house, |
| Everett | they went in-house with the |
| Andrew | intention of doing something |
| Everett | that they were not able to do externally, which is to really emphasize, very thin, very wearable movements. That seems |
| Andrew | like such a novel |
| Everett | concept and watches, especially today, you you know, |
| Andrew | we've got a few brands that are doing a similar thing. |
| Everett | Gnomos is doing a similar thing, but oftentimes we get these brands and they go in-house and they are incorporating some technology, especially with bigger brands, um, that |
| Andrew | is like this is really cool. And you're |
| Everett | like, Yeah, but you forgot about the fact |
| Andrew | that someone was gonna have to wear this Omega. Uh okay, so I'm not gonna get a nineteen sixty |
| Everett | nine moons watch. You know, like Grant's |
| Andrew | ego, yeah, right. You know, you are doing really cool things, but you're forgetting about the fact that at some point this is gonna go into a metal |
| Everett | box that's gonna sit on someone's wrist |
| Everett | and wrap around it, and they're gonna have to lug that bitch around all day. |
| Everett | Yemna seems almost almost |
| Andrew | singularly focused |
| Everett | on dimensional improvement with their in-house efforts. And I'm |
| Andrew | I'm a really big fan of that. I |
| Everett | I want to echo what you're saying. And they went in-house for a reason. And that reason was meaningful. We see, you know, in the last ten years we've seen brands come about and and come to exist because they're like, oh, I I just wanted to wear the watch, I just wanted to make the watch that I wanted to wear. Or brands like, well, I couldn't find the handset that I wanted. So we went in-house and we manufactured our own this, that, or the other thing. And there's no actual tangible benefit to that in-house manufacturing process. But with Yemma, when they went in-house with this movement, they didn't say, Oh, we're gonna make our own shit and it's gonna be just the same as everyone else's. No, no, we're gonna make our own shit and it's gonna be meaningfully better. Like that's the reason we're doing it ourselves. Because the thing that we want to do to improve this product, to improve this thing that we're making isn't commercially available elsewhere. So we're just gonna do it. And that's I think what really enamored me, like got me so enamored with Yemma, is that they decided to to do a thing that was meaningfully better. |
| Everett | Yeah. Well, and and and that's not to show th throw shade on anybody else, right? I I mean maybe a little bit on Omega and Grad Seiko, but that's that's low hanging fruit. Um |
| Everett | you know, the uh uh the |
| Andrew | fact that their priorities line |
| Everett | up really closely I think with our priorities is is just a thing right but the |
| Andrew | fact is that they do line up with |
| Everett | our priorities and so yum is awesome. |
| Everett | Yes yeah. That's a this this is a perfect 5x factor movement. |
| Everett | So notice and raven. Notice |
| Everett | and raven. So uh it's |
| Everett | no secret that we are close |
| Andrew | with Notice, and uh I |
| Everett | think it's perhaps no secret that I'm close with Wes and Colin from Notice. Um |
| Everett | really like Steve. And |
| Everett | and and then of course there's Steve from Raven. Now I think for m a an outset observer, |
| Everett | it might like the relationship between Notice |
| Andrew | and Raven might be a little |
| Everett | like Raven, Steve Steve Laughlin's Kansas based company, Notice LA based company. I mean, sort of in the space at the same time doing similar things, but I I think the |
| Andrew | But in meaningfully different ways. |
| Everett | That's right. The relationship is |
| Andrew | like so two years ago they released |
| Everett | their first trail tracker, a watch that I've known about for a very long time. Um, |
| Everett | and and it's a hit, right? This is a great watch. |
| Andrew | It I I had a little bit different experience |
| Everett | here. I I've met Steve uh on a number of occasions now. Uh |
| Andrew | really really like the guy. Uh I've |
| Everett | had beers with Steve on a number of occasions, |
| Everett | but every single time |
| Everett | I've ever had beer with Steve, I was also having beer with Weson Cullen. So, and this is going back, you know, now at this point, you know, gosh, six, seven years, right? So these are two groups of people, you know, or just that are into |
| Everett | me, like this makes a ton of sense, |
| Everett | right? Like it just when they when they first told me about the trail trekker, I was like, this is gonna be fucking rad, and you guys, I'm so glad you guys are doing this. But I think for the outside observer, it might have been sort of a weird, like what are they well why these why |
| Everett | anyway? They make perfect sense. They |
| Andrew | make perfect sense. And I will also say, |
| Everett | as someone that knows both of you know, both Weson Cullen and Steve, this |
| Everett | watchch is su a fantastic, sensical collab. I love what they've done in the past, and I love what they're doing today. So uh |
| Everett | the original trail trekker, really well built, |
| Andrew | very good looking, GMT |
| Everett | watch, gone instantly. Uh, then we got sort of a like a white out version also that was sexy AF. Um |
| Everett | and now we're getting a new sort of black and forged carbon |
| Everett | version. So maybe we can bring Wes and |
| Everett | Cullen and Steve on to talk about the process of what Ford is card. |
| Andrew | Steve hates doing podcasts. I think Steve hates |
| Everett | us. I don't blame him. Um he does. He he he vocalized that. Uh |
| Everett | Contrail GMT, 39.5mm |
| Everett | wide, 118 thick, which you know, |
| Andrew | this is a beefy watch. Steve has personally fingerprints all over |
| Everett | it. Steve has personally stated to me that he thinks the smaller, thinner watch trend is a fool's errand and he just isn't going to play that game. Uh notice also not sort of thinness chasers never have been. Part of that is that they're using a lot of Seiko movements. Part of that is that's just not their priorities. Um, so it's no surprise that this is a bigger watch, 40 millimeters, uh 39 and a half, 200 meters of water resistance. |
| Andrew | Uh we for the first time get a 24-hour |
| Everett | bezel. It's a forged with carbon |
| Everett | bezel. A forged carbon insert. That's right. Um so you know, as Andrew was stating, forged carbon, just chopped up carbon. Gets hot and mushed. Yeah. Made very hot and mushed together. |
| Everett | That's the scientific terminology for it. |
| Andrew | Inside of this watch, we've got a Miyota 9075, |
| Everett | which I think is a great choice. 42 hour power reserve, solid case back, stamped with the trail tracker logo. Uh steel flat link bracelet with an FKM rubber strap in the box. Notice and Raven, both very good at providing you good options for wearing. Uh thousand bucks, thousand seventy-five will be available at intersect la on july seventeenth and eighteenth which is this weekend uh general sale opening on july twenty second |
| Everett | uh you you maybe forgot |
| Andrew | to mention the coolest part. Oh, |
| Everett | maybe I did. |
| Everett | The loom integration into |
| Andrew | the forged carbon. Yeah. This |
| Everett | is like looking at a lava lamp. |
| Everett | Yeah. But it just thin streaks |
| Everett | and stripes of loom in this forged carbon that makes it look very uh alien-y |
| Andrew | and like it doesn't look |
| Everett | tranny, right? Because it's random |
| Andrew | or it at least appears it has to actually |
| Everett | be random. It's it's it looks more galaxy. |
| Everett | Yes, it's it's like uh Nebulous. Yeah. Right? That's I think the the best word that I have for it. A nebula? Right? It's this |
| Andrew | swarming, swirling pool |
| Everett | of potential and life. And there's |
| Everett | a study in etymology that needs to happen there that we haven't done, but uh yeah, I I don't I don't I I won't argue with your I won't argue with your choice of word. |
| Andrew | Good. Uh it looks super cool. It's like somewhere between tie-dye and a lava lamp with notices I mean direct competitiveness with Seiko |
| Everett | in the terms of loom power, |
| Andrew | right? Like you can spot a Seiko lit |
| Everett | up across a well lit room just like you can a notice because the loom |
| Andrew | is just so uh |
| Everett | so thick and densely |
| Andrew | packed in there that like it's just always on. |
| Everett | What's next? Okay. Uh |
| Andrew | I don't know. What are we where are we at right now? |
| Everett | Yeah, we're at 43 minutes. We're |
| Everett | at 43 minutes. We have time to talk |
| Andrew | about some more watches. We do um |
| Everett | I've got at least one more I want to talk about. Let's talk about the Christopher Ward collaboration |
| Everett | with Zand |
| Andrew | with the 12 Xander. So they're |
| Everett | making 150 of these limited edition |
| Andrew | 12s in |
| Everett | a skeletonized version with this bizarre graffiti-esque |
| Andrew | painting on the skeletonized |
| Everett | movement from the top down. Uh and it and from the bottom, |
| Andrew | right? It's this whole this whole all the top view, all |
| Everett | the bottom view is graffiti painted 12. Uh, and it is something that doesn't |
| Andrew | compute with me, right? Because uh I I tend to think of Christopher Ward as pretty restrained |
| Everett | in their design. Even when they could go skeletonized, you know, I I think the Bel Canto, though novel and revolutionary, is still really restrained. That could have been a disaster and it wasn't. I think the 12 is also something that could have been a disaster, but it wasn't because of their restraint. And this is just not that. This is just like pure fun collaboration. And I kind of dig it. It's not for me, but it's so far out of where I imagine Christopher Ward that I'm having trouble reconciling a 12 that looks like this. |
| Everett | Yeah, I'm not sure. I I don't think you said it, |
| Andrew | but this is a collaboration with Chris Alexander, aka |
| Everett | the dial artist, who I think dial artists sort of first got |
| Andrew | famous with just like his own personal creations, where he was applying |
| Everett | paint to dials for his own |
| Andrew | watches on social media and the people who |
| Everett | like that's rad. And then he's making these, and then he's worked with IFL a lot. |
| Everett | Um, and he's just sort |
| Andrew | of he's sort of a dude, and he is really well known for his watch art. And yeah, I mean this is a cool. These are all hand painted sort of IFL, but this platform, you know, you know |
| Everett | It's not a dial that's hand painted, it's a movement that's |
| Andrew | hand painted. I think it was in the very last |
| Everett | well the yes. Okay, we'll come back to that. |
| Everett | It it in I we'll come back |
| Everett | to that. In the very last episode I kind of said, |
| Andrew | well, IFL, these watches, you know, hand painted, I get it, but it's not for me. Uh, this is |
| Everett | different, and and that's I think because |
| Andrew | of the lack of a dial on the 12. |
| Everett | The 12 is a heavily skeletonized |
| Andrew | movement, and Christopher Ward has really just said we're gonna omit the dial |
| Everett | with these, by and large. And so |
| Everett | he's taken to painting the skeletonized |
| Everett | parts that a dial would normally sit on. It |
| Everett | is a fantastic look. It's a beautiful |
| Everett | watch. It's bizarre. I |
| Everett | like it a lot. And because they're all unique and |
| Andrew | different, uh yeah, |
| Everett | this is th it's cool, but it's it's it's confusing to me. |
| Andrew | Yeah. I don't know how to reconcile |
| Everett | it. Yeah, how much are these? These are ooh, they're making a hundred and fifty of them and they're coming in at six thousand US money.. Yeah On uh |
| Everett | you gotta want this. Yeah. You you're |
| Everett | gonna have to want these. Um Benjamin |
| Everett | James. Benjamin James is sort of a |
| Everett | new player in the |
| Everett | watch world. And then a few years ago, they released the scarafor, the Benjamin |
| Andrew | James Scarafor. I don't remember if we talked |
| Everett | about this watch or not. Um, but really what, it was is a a pretty dressy, sporty TV watch, really |
| Andrew | sort of like good |
| Everett | build quality, not gonna |
| Everett | knock any horologists' socks |
| Everett | off, but just cool. Just cool. Um |
| Everett | and then I think at some time, at some point, |
| Everett | like the cubitus came out and there was kind of some |
| Everett | comparisons made, |
| Everett | and even sort of, oh, well, this Benjamin James like is kind of uh coming through at an interesting time. Anyway, it it kind of fell off my radar. |
| Everett | I remember seeing it and it fell off my radar. |
| Everett | Well, they |
| Everett | have now released a second watch, |
| Andrew | a follow-up to that first, and they're calling it the Deerhurst, |
| Everett | which I think is a bizarre name. Uh not that there's |
| Andrew | anything particularly bizarre. It's like a it's a |
| Everett | deer sausage about Bratwurst. |
| Everett | It feels weird for a name. Um but this is a uh again, a neo-vintage sort of TV dialed |
| Everett | watch uh with |
| Everett | a manually wound a manually |
| Andrew | wound regulator in |
| Everett | a curvy tv case. |
| Everett | It's really interesting. |
| Everett | A nurled bezel. A hobnail |
| Everett | bezel. So this has a hobnail |
| Everett | bezel and it's gorgeous. It is |
| Everett | absolutely stunning. So |
| Everett | 36 millimeter case on a TV dial. It's gonna |
| Everett | wear every bit of a 40. It's |
| Everett | gonna be eh, maybe 38-ish. Uh |
| Andrew | 42 millimeter lug-to-lug and nine |
| Everett | point one millimeters thick, thanks |
| Everett | to that manual wine movement. |
| Everett | Uh stainless steel, we've |
| Andrew | got a really, really |
| Everett | nice, like sort of curvy bevel on the |
| Everett | very thin and delicate lugs. Um, really nice, like curvy |
| Everett | case profiles. Uh, |
| Everett | this is very much a vintage looking |
| Everett | watch. Um w |
| Everett | comes in an old English white, burgundy, and denim blue. How do you |
| Everett | feel about the fonts? All of those are lacquered |
| Everett | uh lacquered polished dials with colored match sub-dials that are that have |
| Everett | these really nice concentric rings in the sub-dials to give you |
| Everett | a little bit of texture. Uh also matching |
| Andrew | handset finish because |
| Everett | it's a regulator, you get central hand showing the minutes, a small seconds at six, and an hour at 12, and |
| Everett | which is crazy, which is just cool. |
| Everett | It's hard to read. And a |
| Everett | custom font set that I love. |
| Everett | I I I'd hoped that you would say |
| Everett | that. That I love. |
| Everett | I absolutely love |
| Everett | the custom font set. So there are |
| Andrew | a few things here I don't like. They've |
| Everett | used uh like |
| Andrew | uh like rivet uh |
| Everett | rivet or screw heads on |
| Andrew | the dial, both at |
| Everett | the hour markers on the on the |
| Everett | on the minute track track and hour track. |
| Everett | And on the hour track. I don't |
| Everett | love that. I think I think rivet is is the right word for that. |
| Everett | I don't love that feature. Um, but everything |
| Andrew | else I just find really, |
| Everett | really intelligently put |
| Andrew | together. What |
| Everett | I can appreciate about those rivet markers is that they match the pins for each of the hands. They they're they're all it's uniformly across everything is riveted down. |
| Andrew | Yeah. Uh I but I but I |
| Everett | share your It does feel like a built it |
| Andrew | feels like a built movement. And and it probably |
| Everett | isn't, right? It's probably uh uh because of the price. So this comes in at what |
| Everett | thousand five hundred or |
| Everett | so, um, which means it's almost certainly not a handbuilt movement, but it does feel that way. Uh |
| Everett | Salita 266 1558 |
| Andrew | money. Salita 266-1 |
| Everett | M with that regulator |
| Everett | setup. Yeah, four hertz movement. I mean nothing nothing like |
| Everett | like I said, nothing horologically uh groundbreaking here, but |
| Everett | really interesting execution and |
| Andrew | a beautiful watch. Yeah, the |
| Everett | blue is really, really nice. Yeah, I like the |
| Andrew | blue black leather. That's my favorite. |
| Everett | I do wish that this came in a black. |
| Andrew | Or even a crispy white. I yeah, that's |
| Everett | right. I don't love the antique. |
| Everett | I the the both the blue |
| Everett | and the oxblood uh |
| Everett | burgundy, whatever we're gonna call that, are nice. But |
| Everett | I I don't really like burgundy. Yeah. |
| Andrew | I I don't like most red watches. They were indecision. |
| Everett | They remind me of the like HIV campaign from the early two thousand two thousands where everything was like in parentheses red and like everyone had a red thing. |
| Everett | Yeah. Uh that's like right where my |
| Everett | head goes whenever I see a red uh tiled watch. I don't know why. I can't I'm I don't know. |
| Andrew | You know, the other thing about this watch that I'm |
| Everett | maybe not wild about is the bracelet. It is a uh seven |
| Everett | link with pretty |
| Everett | evenly spaced links uh and it and it's pretty s it it's pretty expansive you know I think it's been |
| Everett | way better on mesh yeah well |
| Everett | it and and I guess uh for once, this is |
| Everett | not my typical response, but for once, I do think this watch wears much better on a strap than it does a bracelet, or at least it appears so. I I don't really like their strap options. I think it's because the |
| Everett | bracelet kind of sucks for it. I think if this is on mesh with a straight link with a straight bar. |
| Everett | Maybe. I think this gets your this |
| Everett | revs ya. Yeah, maybe. It would rev me. |
| Andrew | Yeah. Um but it's |
| Everett | beautiful, right? I actually think put this thing |
| Everett | on a fucking black croc and it's even |
| Everett | on even the blue dial, like a rock on a black really |
| Andrew | shiny black croc. Oh yeah. Like more |
| Everett | shine on it than any of the polished surfaces on the watch. |
| Andrew | Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I think so. |
| Everett | Anyway, really kind of affordable, very cool watch. Something I, you know, wasn't on my radar. Um |
| Everett | I think it it captures that like kind of uh high horology feel of kind of a weird uh movement something like novel but not novelty |
| Everett | yeah uh without |
| Everett | being prohibitive. Yeah, |
| Everett | sort of uh you know uh uh not to over characterize anything, but kind of similar feel to what Dennison is doing |
| Everett | with their watches. Yeah. |
| Andrew | Um Andrew, other thing? |
| Everett | Yeah, so I um I watched a new TV show today as background noise. |
| Everett | Okay. It's called the Hawk. |
| Everett | It is available on Netflix. That's where I watched it. Um |
| Andrew | yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It has |
| Everett | received scathing reviews. Okay. Scathing reviews. Lackluster. Boring. But here's what it is. This is a millennials time machine. Imagine Will Farrell at his peak, like at the height of Will Farrell. Cuz he's still there. But |
| Andrew | he's a professional golfer who |
| Everett | is kind of it's kind of like Happy Gilmore flavored, but more has-been rather than never was. So the whole premise of this show is that Will Farrell plays a has-been golfer who when he was was uh a multi-time champion and was top of his game and then uh crumbled and so we join Will Farrell in his quest to get back onto the tour why where his adult son is a member of the tour and his estranged wife is uh what's her name? Julie Shannon. Uh she's an SNL lady. Um Julie Shannon? She's the lady. Molly Shannon. |
| Andrew | She's the lady with uh who smells her armpits. |
| Everett | Yeah, yeah, yeah. So Molly, so the here's the thing. This is a who's who. Will Farrell, Molly Shannon, Fortune Feemster, Feemster, Feamster, David Hornsby, Luke Wilson, Chris Parnell, uh Keith David, just everyone who |
| Andrew | gets on screen you recognize. |
| Everett | And the reviews are it's not funny enough. No, the reality is this is a this is Will Farrell getting to make a |
| Andrew | five-hour movie instead of being |
| Everett | limited to 90 to 120 minutes. So that's what he did. And it is funny. It is exactly as surface level as you want it to be. It is millennial like |
| Andrew | safety blanket of |
| Everett | Will Ferrell greatness. I've loved every second of it. The critics will not, because the critics also didn't love Taladega Knights. Or Anchorman or Blades of Glory or any of that, right? You know, but this is that ilk. This is that made into five hours of consumable media instead of being limited to an hour and a half. Watch it. It's available on Netflix. It's perfect background noise. It's funny. It's silly. It's stupid. And it takes you right back to sitting on your friend's couch watching Talladega Nights as a kid. I loved it. |
| Everett | I like that. Is it Is it funny? |
| Everett | It's funny enough. It didn't |
| Andrew | make you laugh though. I I laughed |
| Everett | more than once, but I enjoyed it the whole time. Right. Like it's not like it's not written like a lot of modern comedies, right? Okay, if we look at some of the best modern comedies, uh and let's use Ted Lasso for example. Every line of Ted Lasso is a joke. And that's what's so beautiful about this show is that they're somehow able to work in only joke form while building really beautiful characters and carrying a story. |
| Andrew | That's like some kind of unheard |
| Everett | of accomplishment in the way of dramedy writing. |
| Everett | Okay. Right. But but |
| Everett | 20 years ago, at the peak of Will Farrell, there's fun |
| Andrew | in between, and then there's a |
| Everett | joke. And then the fun like carries you to the next joke. So you enjoy all of it, but you're not constantly laughing. There's not the obscure quotes like from Ted Lasso where if you like every every line is funny. Even the sad lines are funny. |
| Andrew | Yeah. This |
| Everett | isn't that, right? Like Will Farrell has not evolved to keep up with modern comedy writing. He is still the frat pack, and the show is very much that. And I loved it. |
| Andrew | Yeah, I'll give it a try. You're |
| Everett | not gonna hate it. You're gonna you're just gonna watch it and you're gonna enjoy it and you're gonna laugh some and a couple times you're gonna feel a little awkward and sometimes you're gonna go, |
| Everett | Ooh. How many episodes? Uh |
| Everett | ten. But they're thirty minutes. So okay. |
| Everett | So pretty quick. Yeah, they're just it it |
| Everett | I burned through it. I assume it's like one |
| Everett | and done, right? I assume this is a single season. I will I |
| Everett | will not watch it again, right? This isn't Anchorman that you could watch like you just like |
| Everett | No no I was gonna I I mean I I assume this is like a single season. |
| Everett | I hope so. Okay. I can't imagine. I haven't finished the last episode, but I can't imagine this gets renewed. |
| Everett | Andrew, I've got another thing. Do me. So my other thing is it's actually a twofer. You would it it is really |
| Everett | Yeah, it and that's okay. Um so I |
| Everett | I have been building |
| Andrew | a a shop, right? |
| Everett | Uh I think I've talked about this on the show a number of times. I've been building a shop |
| Andrew | and I am, you know, uh |
| Everett | kind of going slow, but filling |
| Andrew | holes and uh |
| Everett | you know, trying to buy tools that will meet my immediate needs and then and then other tools. And I'm working on a motorcycle |
| Andrew | and uh, you know, |
| Everett | working on, you know, being ready to work on the cars and just trying to be |
| Andrew | more hands-on with my stuff. |
| Everett | So one of the things |
| Andrew | that I knew |
| Everett | I needed, but I've been kind of hesitant to buy, was a good wrench |
| Andrew | set, like a standard combination |
| Everett | wrench set. |
| Everett | And the reason I've been |
| Andrew | hesitant to buy a combination |
| Everett | wrench set is that |
| Andrew | wrenches are a little sort of I'll send you a link, Andrew, but uh I can see you're looking at your phone on |
| Everett | the trying to like uh Wrenches |
| Andrew | are are an interesting item in the sense that you can get everything from fairly inexpensive ranches that are today |
| Everett | made in Taiwan are very good, |
| Andrew | very capable. Everything from that to you know, |
| Everett | a snap-on combination red set, which is gonna cost, you know, $650, $700. |
| Everett | I guess I'm wondering what the delta is between a a piece of forged steel In in that affordable to luxury. Right, right. So maybe that's the question that you're about to answer. But it's just a single piece of forged steel with one open end, one closed end. Variable shank lengths, right? Like |
| Andrew | Yeah, well it and I and |
| Everett | I I w I guess you said I'm gonna answer that. I'm not sure I'm going to. Oh. Um |
| Everett | so your other thing is that the hunt remains. |
| Everett | Yeah, no, the hunt doesn't remain. I I've |
| Everett | I've cracked the code, at least |
| Everett | for myself, I've cracked the code. Um |
| Everett | but I I I sort of had to sort of |
| Everett | I don't know, kind of figure out what my priorities were. You know, the the the reality is again today you can get very good wrenches. So there's a couple brands that come up. You know, Gear Wrench is a |
| Andrew | brand that is very popular |
| Everett | amongst sort of homeowners for being like mechanic quality. There's a brand called Tecton, which is a US company that mostly outsources to other countries uh its production, but also has a number of American-made tools, not wrenches, notably. Um |
| Andrew | and then and and then there are any number of other very good tools, and then |
| Everett | you sort of can get into the tool truck world, |
| Andrew | like Mac tools or Matco |
| Everett | or um and then of course you can |
| Everett | go to fucking Lowe's and get Cobalt. |
| Everett | That like if you break it, uh you just bring a cobalt cobalt tool back into Lowe's and they just give you the new one. |
| Everett | Correct. Or you can still get craftsman, |
| Andrew | although craftsman uh is is a a |
| Everett | a shadow of its former self, you can |
| Andrew | still buy craftsman wrenches. And they're probably for most people, |
| Everett | myself included, gonna be great. |
| Andrew | So I think I think combination wrenches are |
| Everett | an interesting I think like combination wrenches, screw like fixed screwdrivers are kind of an interesting place in that world of like it it can only get so good. |
| Everett | Yeah. Oh yeah. The diminishing |
| Everett | return happens fast. And of course there |
| Andrew | are channels like Torque Test Channel |
| Everett | and Project Farm or whatever that will uh uh |
| Everett | with various different testing |
| Everett | methods kind of try to like uh you |
| Andrew | know put these in place. But but the reality is for for most |
| Everett | people, any you know, husky from |
| Andrew | Hope Depot, uh Craftsman, |
| Everett | uh would the thing you can buy |
| Everett | is almost certainly going to be good enough. Almost |
| Andrew | certainly gonna be good enough. And to your point, Andrew, if you go get cobalt, |
| Everett | inexpensive, you might spend 80 or |
| Andrew | 100 bucks on a wrench set, lifetime guaranteed. |
| Everett | And then there's Harbor Freight. Right? And then there's Harbor Freight. You've got |
| Andrew | Icon, which are very nice, sort of mechanic professional grade tools that are lifetime warranted. But |
| Everett | then you've also got Pittsburgh tools, |
| Andrew | which are much less expensive, |
| Everett | still warranted for life, |
| Andrew | and still very good. So and still just pressed or like forged steel. That's right. And professionals |
| Everett | are are using these, right? Today |
| Andrew | there are mechanics using Pittsburgh wrench sets |
| Everett | and they're like, these are fine. And when they break, I |
| Andrew | take 'em so anyway, I'm kind of trying to figure |
| Everett | out my priorities. I I feel like a combination wrench |
| Andrew | set is just a staple item, and in some |
| Everett | ways, sort of it's like my identity is wrapped up in this decision, and and which is bizarre, and and so just forgive me for a |
| Andrew | moment, but um, I one of the things |
| Everett | I do try to do when I am gonna make a decision like that is I kind of try to think of like what |
| Andrew | are the economic impacts of what I'm doing. And I love buying American stuff. I love |
| Everett | buying American stuff because I know that I'm supporting our economy, I'm supporting American manufacturing, I'm supporting some family who's probably gone |
| Andrew | through tough times. Uh, you |
| Everett | know, perhaps a family or a group of people, I say a family, but you know, some |
| Andrew | group |
| Everett | It's a contribution. It's a contribution |
| Everett | to an idea, right? You know, the reason we won World War II is because we made everything here. |
| Everett | That doesn't happen it was because of the American |
| Everett | fighting man and the man behind the man behind the gun. |
| Everett | Not true. It's because we controlled |
| Andrew | manufacturing. And that doesn't happen today, right? |
| Everett | You know, that we don't control. In fact, we so anyway, I think I've said that two episodes straight. |
| Andrew | We've spiraled here. I I found a company. It's a |
| Everett | company that maybe people have heard of. I |
| Andrew | had I was really unfamiliar. There's a company |
| Everett | called the Wright Tool Company. |
| Andrew | Uh and uh they are |
| Everett | uh out of Michigan or Ohio, |
| Andrew | depending on which part of right tool we're talking |
| Everett | about, but this is a |
| Everett | company that makes their own tools. |
| Everett | That's they sent me Forge. |
| Everett | They forge. I sent you Oh |
| Everett | you sent me the the Harry Epstein. |
| Everett | Yes. Oh okay so that's the twofer. So there there are two companies I want to talk about right now? One of these is Right Tool Company. So Right |
| Everett | Tool makes a very, |
| Everett | very good combination wrench |
| Everett | set. Uh they make |
| Everett | a bunch of different sets, but they make a very good combination |
| Everett | wrench. You can get these in blasted finish |
| Everett | or polished finish. Their chrome work is maybe |
| Everett | a little sus compared to like some other |
| Everett | companies, but their actual wrench quality is second |
| Andrew | almost second to none. These compete |
| Everett | almost neck and neck with like Snap-on flank drive, the best wrenches you can buy. They're made in the US. They sell for anywhere from 35 to 50% of what you would get snap-on wrenches for. Uh from made in the USA product. And so I did I bit the bullet on a 7 to 22 millimeter 15-piece. Do they have uh |
| Everett | Imperial sizing too? They do. So you just you just bought the metrics. |
| Everett | I just bought the metric set because Imperial wrenches if you're working on cars in 2026. Unless you're working on old Fords or something like you're going to be using metric wrenches. So I just got the re metric set. 240 bucks. A lot of money. It is a big fucking ask. But |
| Everett | comes in a nice waxed canvas tool |
| Andrew | bag though. And that's your thing. And I just |
| Everett | think no, I don't even have them in the roll. Um, I've got them in my toolbox in a in a stand. Um, the two |
| Andrew | for here is because I I just love |
| Everett | the idea of this company. Here's a company that's committed. They're like, we're doing it. We're gonna through thick and thin, we're gonna charge what we need to charge to keep it going please buy our products and people do i do and and maybe you should too i bought them from a tool store this is a tool store i had a kansas city a tool store out of Kansas city called hairy J. Epstein. |
| Everett | Not affiliated and not in |
| Andrew | the files. Not affiliated. |
| Everett | I think this has to be one of the coolest companies in the entire United States. Harry Epstein is an old school tool company. They cater primarily to blue-collar professionals in the Kansas City area. They have everything that any sort of tradesman would ever need to do their job. They buy they buy sort of uh the true believer companies stock and sell them. So what you're getting is a whole bunch of very cool American companies that that you really are not going to find on the shelves of Lowe's, right? We're talking about Mayhew, Lang. Um you know, there's a they they carry a billion companies, but they also buy like really cool Japanese tools. Kyoto Tool Company, Koken, um, they have an incredible stock. |
| Andrew | So they're buying the shit. |
| Everett | They're buying the shit. It's this is a curated |
| Andrew | tool store. That's right. And |
| Everett | if I ever get to Kansas City, I am 100% gonna pilgrimage there. Uh the owner, a fellow named Jory Sakan, he is, I believe, a fourth-generation family owner. Harry Epstein, I think, is great grandpa. Uh eventually wound up in the hands of Steve Sacken, who's Jory's dad. These guys just seem fucking awesome. Steve died, I want to say last year. And Jory has taken over. I think these are salt of the earth people, and I just love everything about this company. Uh and so those are my two things. One, Wright Tool Company, and two, Harry J. Epstein tools, tool company. |
| Andrew | How was the roll that it came in? It's |
| Everett | it's fantastic. It is uh it's not waxed, it's a denim roll, it's wonderful, it's beautiful. Uh I immediately took the wrenches out of that and put them in my very nice tool cart, uh, but it is a very nice tool roll. It it I felt good about the purchase, Andrew. |
| Everett | That's something. I felt |
| Everett | good about the purchase. Uh, you know, I don't need a $240. They're the right grip two point oh. They've got a fantastic like gripping. I don't need that. I don't need that. But I wanted to I I just like buying things that I feel good about. I felt so good about this purchase. And I'm a Harry J. Epstein customer now. Like if I can, I'm gonna buy my shit from there because I just love the fact that they're they're like committed to this sort of ambiguous philosophy and and we need more of it. And so I'm a true believer and I wanted to share that. Look |
| Everett | at you. Which I think is what what other things |
| Everett | are for. It's exactly what share things |
| Andrew | are for. So uh and for those |
| Everett | of you in the Kansas City area, fix |
| Andrew | where you're buying your tools. Sorry if that got |
| Everett | ranty, but I just love it. I'm really happy about it. I didn't mean to be ranty. I meant to be just like excited. I'm very excited. |
| Everett | Everything you do is a rant. Yeah, fair |
| Everett | enough. Everything. Fair enough. It's pretty cool though. |
| Everett | I'd love to hear you opine on toilet paper. |
| Andrew | Yeah. I don't have opinions about toilet |
| Everett | paper. I think if you got going on it |
| Andrew | you would. I don't think I do. Yeah. I mean |
| Everett | I y you know there are things that I can't |
| Andrew | You're telling me that porta potty, like |
| Everett | chemical toilet, toilet paper. |
| Everett | I mean, I probably don't love it, but it's also not something I'm gonna spend a lot of time worrying about. |
| Everett | That's my wife asked me once. She was like, |
| Everett | Do you like this toilet paper or this toilet paper? I was like I didn't know that they were I I never noticed that they were different. |
| Andrew | You maybe need to do a better job wiping. |
| Everett | I don't wipe. That's the deal. Oh, there it is. Yeah, |
| Andrew | yeah. You got that bidet. You're better than all of |
| Everett | us. Andrew, anything else you want to talk about before |
| Everett | we go? No, I don't want to hear any more about your |
| Everett | bidet. Hey folks, thanks for joining us for this |
