Synopsis¶
In this episode of the 40 and 20 WatchClicker podcast, hosts Andrew and Everett discuss recent watch releases and personal updates. Everett shares about his family's new puppy named Megatron, while Andrew complains about the summer heat. They dive into several watch topics including the innovative X-Band Smart Strap, a smartwatch clasp that fits onto standard 20mm watch straps for $279. They also cover the Eric Wind and Rowing Blazers collaboration with Seiko, featuring rally diver designs in 38mm and 42mm sizes.
The hosts discuss Studio Underdog's O2 Series Gen 2, which features a slimmer case and the new Sellita SW200-2 Power Plus movement with 63 hours of power reserve. They also examine the Oris Divers Date in olive green, Temporal Works' Series A Rambler (a field watch inspired by the Patek Philippe 565), and IFL Watches' koi fish collaboration with Citizen's Tsuyosa platform. The episode takes a personal turn when Everett reveals his midlife crisis purchase: a 1976 Yamaha XS650 motorcycle bought for $500 that needs electrical work after its wiring loom caught fire. Andrew remains skeptical about whether Everett will actually ride it, predicting he'll restore and sell it instead.

| Andrew | Hello, fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to 40 and 20, the WatchClicker podcast with your hosts Andrew and my good friend Everett. Here we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things. we like Everett. How are you? |
| Everett | I'm doing alright, man. I'm doing alright. It's been uh it's been a longer week than we normally go in between recordings. So I feel like |
| Andrew | Yeah, we had some we had some things come up this week and just |
| Everett | sat down in a while. But yeah, I'm good. I'm good. There's a uh there's a I don't know if I've talked about it, but my we got a puppy. |
| Andrew | You're going to Europe? A couple. I |
| Everett | did talk about that. I |
| Andrew | don't know that you have talked about it on the show. In fact, it was like it it took me by surprise. You sent a photograph of an animal that I did not recognize. And I was like, wait a second, is this is this is this living with you? It's it seemed like the decision making process was was brief. |
| Everett | Oh no it wasn't it's been happening for a long time. I've just sort of been I I I'm sort of anti right and it's not because I'm anti-dog or it's not because I don't love puppies or I'm not |
| Andrew | gonna whole nother responsibility. That's |
| Unknown | right I'm not that falls on you. Why are we |
| Everett | doing this? Why do we why are we gonna create this? Anyway, that's a different story. Uh, but we did get a new puppy. My it and and so the deal is my wife's sister has bred these puppies. She uh bred her dog with another dog, and then they made puppies, nine of them. |
| Unknown | They just put them in the backyard and so get to work. |
| Everett | You know, I don't actually know. I think it was slightly more um I don't know if professional is the right word, official than that. There was like a |
| Andrew | candles and music. Maybe, |
| Everett | yes. I think there was like a drop-off and like a period of time. It was like a matter of days where her dog was not there and was at just getting porked. And did they do a |
| Andrew | DNA test to make sure the dad is the dad that they think it is? |
| Everett | Yeah no, I don't think maybe I don't know. So these dogs are um they're half um half cavalier uh uh cavalier spaniel and half poodle. They're cava poos. Do you know what that is? |
| Andrew | I do because you have one. Okay, I guess. And I saw her over there the other day, or maybe yesterday or two days ago. |
| Everett | Yeah. Uh with a couple of them |
| Andrew | frolicking in the front yard. Right. Okay. |
| Everett | So that's the deal. Because this is my wife's sister because this is Kim's sister that has the dogs, oftentimes there is more than one puppy at my house. Which I have to admit, not the worst thing in the world. |
| Andrew | No, a puppy party is not the kind of the peak party situation. |
| Everett | Especially because like by and large they're not mine. There is the one that's |
| Andrew | they leave and and they're adorable. They weigh like eighteen ounces. |
| Everett | That's right. Uh so uh our puppy is, I think, the runt of the litter. And I want to say she's about seven and a half pounds right now at 11 weeks. Uh I don't |
| Andrew | believe that she's seven and a half pounds. I |
| Everett | I think that's the official weight. Is it? Yeah, I think that's the official weight. And she is just a little puffball. Uh and her name is Megatron. |
| Andrew | It's super fitting. |
| Everett | Which I also really like. Uh yeah, and then right now we've got uh Megatron's big brother and he probably weighs twice as much as she does, which is interesting. Um |
| Andrew | Huh. Yeah. But she kinda kicks |
| Everett | his ass too. It's like 'cause she's Megatron. Cause she's Megatron. |
| Andrew | And he's a little bitch pup. That's right, he's |
| Everett | Bowie. Stupid |
| Andrew | Bowie. Yeah. Uh anyway, |
| Everett | no, super fun. So I'm doing well, Andrew. Uh how are you? |
| Andrew | I'm good. I'm just you know chugging along. Taking taking one day at a time. Uh it's hot all the time right now. And it's not even that hot, right? We're getting into like the high eighties every day. That's like about 20 degrees higher than my like |
| Everett | was than my top end comfort zone. Yeah. |
| Andrew | So you know And I love it. |
| Everett | 83 is like my favorite thing in the world. |
| Andrew | I I will tolerate if I have AC. Only if you have AC like |
| Everett | if I can sleep at 68 and be in like 80 all day. |
| Andrew | Uh no, 75 is like my top end comfort zone. And that's with air conditioning in my residence and car and basically every time I'm outside. |
| Unknown | Yeah. Uh yeah, no, I like I I do like the warmth. |
| Andrew | No. So it's it's just been a little a little hotter than I uh have enjoyed. So I just like kind of feel sluggish all the time and |
| Everett | Yeah, fair enough. Uh but you know |
| Andrew | what? It's not Texas. Uh and I think about that all the time. The first summer I lived there, we had a hundred consecutive days over a hundred degrees. |
| Unknown | Oof, and for those |
| Andrew | of you doing the math, that's more than three months uh of just every day over a hundred degrees. And I I remember at the end of that August, I was like getting reverse seasonal affective disorder in that I would come home from work and turn the tap to cold and pour hot water out because the groundwater was so hot and I was like sad and depressed and I just wanted to feel cold. Like the water out of your like the coldest shower you could take was still a warm shower. |
| Unknown | Yeah. Uh I would go to stores |
| Andrew | that had beer caves so I could go in inside their beer cave and just stand and experience cool air. |
| Everett | You know, we're we're about six minutes. I don't |
| Unknown | know if I've ever told this story on the uh on the pot, but when I was in the army for a brief period of time. I was like a jag that was attached to a cab unit. And we did a rotation at the National Training Center, which is at Fort Irwin, which is sort of like sandwich in between uh death Valley and the Mojave Desert. Anyway, it is the |
| Andrew | Mojave. It's very fucking |
| Unknown | hot. Uh so y you know, in the summer. And I was there at end of July. So you're |
| Andrew | that's one does. I don't think anyone's ever gone there outside of the month of July. N D |
| Everett | C in February? Nah. |
| Andrew | July. Uh |
| Everett | so you know, it's like uh, you know, a hundred and ten to a hundred and fifteen if almost |
| Unknown | every day, like a peak temperature sort of in that range. |
| Andrew | And at night it gets down to 90. |
| Everett | And it's a you know it's a simulated, it's a simulated um you know it's basically like an extended patrol, right? So |
| Unknown | you leave like cantonment, the |
| Everett | sort of quote unquote base area with the Burger King, and you pass through the gates and you're in country, right? You |
| Unknown | are you know they prohibit you from having |
| Everett | cell phones. You're like totally detached |
| Unknown | from the world. Well, my rotation, |
| Everett | somebody somebody |
| Unknown | screwed up and we couldn't find the ice. So |
| Everett | there's ice. We know there's ice, but we couldn't find the ice. So what we had was water |
| Unknown | buffaloes baking in the sun all day. We |
| Everett | had no cold. There was no cold in the lot in our lives. Everything was hot. And I'm I think in the middle of the rotation, I wound up. I was a judge advocate, right? So |
| Unknown | I'm not fucking doing anything important. |
| Everett | And so at one point in the rotation, this photographer who I knew comes through and he's like, hey, I'm trying to get to the the tank the tank range, |
| Unknown | and I'm like, Yeah, I'll take you. I don't know where |
| Everett | it is, but I go grab my OC and we like are driving up this ridge, and we get to the tippy top of this ridge, and uh you know, I find out I'm about to see like a big firework show, a |
| Unknown | military firework show, which is awesome. |
| Everett | But then I see this uh I see this Humvee on the back of the Humvee, there's a |
| Unknown | one of those orange Igloo Gatorade containers. |
| Andrew | And the OC is like like |
| Everett | kind of nods at me. He's like, go ahead. Go ahead. This is a no-no, right? Not supposed to do |
| Unknown | that. This is the knowest of no's. But I get |
| Everett | a nod from the OC, the observer |
| Unknown | controller. They're basically like safeties and |
| Andrew | yeah right that's yeah yeah they're range safeties uh judges |
| Unknown | he he gives me he gives me a nod and so I go over and I |
| Everett | I can still remember the feeling andrew as I pulled that as I |
| Unknown | pulled that lever, I |
| Everett | could feel like the |
| Unknown | the little pops of water |
| Everett | coming up the cold water. And this is like |
| Unknown | day six, right? You'd |
| Everett | like just gotten there. Wow. |
| Unknown | Day six, no cold water. I mean you |
| Everett | change your perspective pretty quick. Anyway, so like I feel this this cold gosh, I will never forget that feeling. And then I think the next day they found her eyes. They're like, oh we found we found the eyes. |
| Andrew | I remember I I would I would do um I think daily uh 20 foot box like reefer box because I had a I had a reefer box in my uh company. |
| Unknown | That's not weed by the way you guys. Uh |
| Andrew | and we it was a refrigerated container unit. But I had a reefer box and I would do daily ice runs when we were in the field. So we'd go through fe2et0 of like a 20 foot container volume of ice every day. |
| Unknown | Yeah. Uh out in the training areas of Fort |
| Andrew | Hood. But that's, you know, that's for like a |
| Unknown | battalion size or maybe even a brigade size. It was a battalion. |
| Andrew | Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, I was |
| Everett | in a headquarters unit. We had ice, we couldn't find |
| Andrew | it. It was just your reefer box was just sitting alone, chugging away. |
| Everett | That's right. Chilling your ice. That's |
| Unknown | right. Uh anyway, that's that's |
| Everett | my story about being cold after being |
| Unknown | hot. Um to add on to your story. Andrew, uh I think it's about time that because we're not here to talk about ice |
| Andrew | ice and hot uh no |
| Unknown | we are we are here to talk about. I have a thing, and |
| Andrew | this is an interesting thing. And and I actually wait, |
| Everett | wait. Oh, sorry. I want to get a star. |
| Andrew | Go ahead and cut that out. |
| Everett | As if I edit. Do you want to get us started? Yes! Oh my |
| Andrew | gosh. I have something that uh it's not often that something like this comes out that actually kind of catches my interest and gets me excited. There's a lot of interesting things that happen in the watch world. We the we there's four let's say four, there is six hundred hours |
| Everett | of us talking about talking about the |
| Andrew | interesting things about uh the watches or the watch industry. I think |
| Everett | they're about to be pretty close to that. We're episode |
| Andrew | this is 401 or 402. Yeah 401 we assume they're all uh an hour and a half |
| Unknown | roughly uh so that's |
| Andrew | 600 yeah I'm not like a wizard or anything. But that's how math works. This is something that really piqued my interest. The X-Band Smart Strap. It does the smart work for your So here's what got me interested. Here's like what what grabbed me. I think there's always there are a lot of really good arguments to abandon mechanical watches in favor of smartwatches. I think there's as many arguments in favor as there are against. In so much as there are people who dual wrists so they can wear their smartwatch and their mechanical watch. I think there's more arguments against that type of behavior than there are in favor of it. But this very intriguing thing resolves that for a very small window of watches. So what we have here is an X band where the clasp is the smart device. And it comes with a cut-to-fit FKM rubber strap. And it does all the things that your Aura ring or your Apple Watch or take your pick of smart devices, like smart worn devices, do but replaces your but lives in place of your watch clasp on FKM. I can't speak to the quality of the FKM. I'd just say just from looking at renderings and even product photography, it looks like it's gonna be pretty good. |
| Everett | FKM is FKM, right? Like I think dimensionally you get some variation of flexibility. Like |
| Andrew | but these are nice and thick. These aren't like weird thin flimsy FKM. Uh they look to be the right thickness, the right texture. The clasp itself is uh it says 44 millimeters, but I I think that could be accurate. It look, it's gonna be a long class, I think, initially. Uh, but for what you're getting, which is the smart wearable device that fits flush against your wrist because you can cut to length your FKM strap. So you get a custom fit smart device that you can swap out onto all of your 20 millimeter lug watches that comes in four different colors. I think I would have preferred like an all-steel option, but it looks like there's just the four color match to the strap rubber color in white, black, orange, and green and so reading this I'm like oh man this is gonna be either like a dud and cost nothing or a dud and cost a bucket load. These are 279 bucks. These are gonna be available on Kickstarter. I'm intrigued by this. |
| Everett | Yeah, I I'm gonna make a prediction. It's gonna be |
| Andrew | a bust. But I'm intrigued. I |
| Everett | I don't think it's gonna be a bust. I I think that this I think that they'll sell enough of this to make it viable. Uh I I do actually I think this is pretty clever. I'm gonna make a prediction though. My prediction is specific that Gen 2 of this device has a GPS uh because that going through the specs, so you've got um you've got a heart rate, sleep, blood oxygen, stress activity monitor, uh, you've got 40 quote unquote sports mod modes, uh, you've got um an accelerometer, which it is interesting and kind of fun. That's |
| Andrew | probably how it's capturing your step count. |
| Everett | That's right. That's how it captor captures activity, movement tracking. Um you've got temperature sensor, obviously. Uh y you know, you've got a lot of clever things, but I I think that I think that you know you're not gonna get sort of compatibility with Strava or whatever because it doesn't monitor it doesn't monitor GPS. That's my that's the one thing I read that I was like, you know, that is I think a miss here. And and it could be that they couldn't squeeze it in. I think |
| Andrew | to hold it at 279 for initial offering, I think you can't squeeze in GPS. |
| Everett | Yeah, and I don't know, but that's my prediction is the Gen 2 of this or or perhaps an upgraded version of this comes with the GPS. Cause I think for me to make the leap, like I don't care about like how did I sleep last night? I know. You know how I know |
| Andrew | poorly. That's how I slept last night. I |
| Everett | know. Um, so I you know, I and I know a lot of people are very sort of data-driven when it comes to this kind of stuff, and they really like that's a big part of their life is is tracking that sort of stuff, especially in 2026. But for me, that's never been the appeal. In fact, the only smartwatch functionality that I've ever thought I really would like to have this on a regular basis is GPS. It's the only one. Um, I don't want text messages on my watch. I don't, you know, although I can see the the utility there, right? It's just not something I'm interested in. The only thing I've ever thought of |
| Andrew | being able to ignore my phone. Yeah. You can't you can't say, Oh, I didn't see it if it's attached to your wrist. |
| Everett | The only thing I've ever wanted out of a smartwatch and I've I've ever thought, gosh, that would be so convenient, was GPS. And so and maybe I'm in a minority. I I'm certainly not alone in that. I |
| Andrew | think we are in a minority. It could yeah, it |
| Everett | could it could be. But that's my prediction is that Gen two of this comes with a GPS. |
| Andrew | I think and I think the only part of that that I disagree with is that I think Gen 2 is probably expansion into other sizes. |
| Everett | Oh, sure, maybe. And then we |
| Andrew | see future iterations that include GPS. Uh, because they need to test viability here. And I think this is a really interesting way to capture those people who are kind of fence riding and perhaps the dual wrists. Uh oops, smack my microphone. |
| Everett | Now I will say we're looking at some renders that have a curved end. |
| Andrew | Yeah, it it is this |
| Everett | gonna be it, but then but then other renders other renders that show a straight end obviously a straight end is is the play here. Um, but I wonder if I I didn't actually look at the Kickstarter in depth, but I wonder if that is you know, if there's gonna be |
| Unknown | enough draw of this for them to |
| Everett | say, well, here is a submariner shaped end link, which which you know that would be the first play, right? Because that gets |
| Andrew | to captures everyone who wears a sub. |
| Everett | Well not only that, but there's a lot of watches that there's a lot of watches that come out with nearly identical dimensions for obvious reasons. So they want to get into those ecosystems. So |
| Unknown | there are people who do that? Uh there are Monta |
| Everett | is the one I think about. Yeah. So anyway, we shall see this. I actually I'm kind of into it, Andrew. I think it's pretty |
| Andrew | clever. I'm really intrigued by this. It solves a problem that didn't exactly exist, but it it fills a hole in the ecosystem that yeah that did certainly exist. |
| Everett | Yeah I think so there's some interesting |
| Andrew | overlap uh appeal there and it and doing a 20 millimeter cut to length, like I short of doing customizable right uh right out of the gate, that's that's pretty pretty clever. |
| Everett | Yeah, y you know, the the old I I I didn't read, Andrew, did you did you have a chance to look is there um is there g micro adjustment capability here? Because in a perfect world you'd set this to a length and have you know a couple millimeters on either side of that. |
| Unknown | It does not look to |
| Andrew | me like there's micro adjustment, |
| Unknown | but but it's hard to tell because these |
| Andrew | are all renderings. There's no open class photos. |
| Everett | Cause you know but it's a long enough clasp, |
| Andrew | but it really it looks like it has to have |
| Everett | I might need a micro adjustment between like |
| Andrew | noon and four. Between seven thirty |
| Everett | when I put my watch on at four o'clock. Yeah. When I'm yeah. |
| Andrew | When I'm hot. So I it this is |
| Everett | I actually think this is really cool. It's not the type of thing that would normally tickle my fancy. So |
| Andrew | here's here's what it looks like to me. There is ribbing on the bottom third of each end of the strap, uh, with a with a channel hole through. And there are screws. So it looks like depending on how wide those ribs are, that's where you're gonna cut them, and then you mount your strap in into those pinholes. So it does not look like there's going to be any kind of micro adjust. |
| Everett | Well, because it's FKM, you're gonna get a little bit of flex just in I I would you know I my concern here would be, you know, you order and and maybe there's gonna be the ability to get additional straps, but |
| Andrew | you know you get it in |
| Everett | February, and then by the time it's June, you're like, oh, this fucking thing doesn't fit anymore. So anyway, it this is pretty cool. I think it's pretty clever. I'm into it. Uh I I can see some problems, but um |
| Andrew | I thought I saw or at least someone just the rubber. Um |
| Everett | yeah, that that they obviously are gonna they're gonna need to be able to provide |
| Andrew | uh replacement rubber. Eighty-nine dollars for replacement or different color |
| Everett | that's deep rubber but that's deep. |
| Andrew | I I yeah, i it is, but to have uh markers along the strap where to cut. |
| Everett | Yeah. But almost like links. Yeah. I mean it's in it's in the range. It it's a lot of money though. |
| Andrew | Yeah, I mean they're paying 13 bucks for it and they're making some money back. |
| Everett | Yeah, I mean for the rubber component, they're probably paying less than 10 would be my guess at any volume. So |
| Andrew | yeah uh this is clever. I like it. I I am intrigued by it. Uh if if they hold past their Kickstarter launch and can do a gen two I think I'll |
| Everett | yeah where where are they at in |
| Andrew | uh they just where |
| Everett | are they at they just launched on the eighth |
| Andrew | um let's see. |
| Everett | And this is we are linking to a sponsored post. I don't know that we're responsible for telling you that, but um we're not sponsored. We're linking to a sponsored post. |
| Andrew | Uh so it's out of Hong Kong. Um They are at twelve thousand six hundred pledged of their nineteen hundred dollar goal. |
| Everett | Yeah, which is almost absurdly low. Like that it it almost seems like they're using Kickstarter as a marketing platform for an |
| Andrew | like actual funding platform. Yeah. |
| Everett | So well it very interesting. Um we shall see and I don't know, maybe we'll keep you updated. There's a few folks that have taken a look at this. I know random rob, I or I think random rob took a look at this, or maybe maybe I'm maybe I'm conflating this with something else. Uh anyway, yeah, pretty cool, man. Pretty cool. Eric Wind. |
| Andrew | Do you have anything that you'd like to talk about? I |
| Everett | would like to talk about Eric Wind. Oh. Eric Wind and Rowing Blazers have once again collaborated with Seiko for their fourth version uh or their fourth collaboration, their fourth watch collaboration, going back to their sort of original this this sort of staple design, which is to say the rally diver design, which is a a fairly enigmatic design. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but it's any |
| Andrew | sense, but it looks really good. Yeah, that's |
| Everett | right. Yeah, that's right. Reminds |
| Andrew | me of like Speed Racer, is is like kind of that that feel. |
| Everett | Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. It's it feels a little bit like uh yeah, like Japanese for the Western world kind of deal. Um which of course it is precisely that. It is Japanese for the Western world. Um, you know, I I don't actually know a whole lot about rowing blazers. I don't know |
| Andrew | anything about rowing blazers outside of the collaboration watches that they've done. |
| Everett | That's right. You know, I I know they use |
| Andrew | interesting colors. Yeah. Uh and typically like a uh a kind of uh perplexing color palette that for some reason works. This is not that though. This doesn't feel rowing blazers at all. |
| Everett | Uh it it do doeses to to me. You know, th they've sort of got that like take ivy vibe. And it's uh it's fun, you know. But again, I I know nothing about the company. I'm not gonna I've I've never been to I say I've never been to uh rowing blazers as if it's like a store. I don't know. I don't know what it is. I actually don't even know what it is. |
| Andrew | So many of these brands that do collaborations that they they they do worse than us in burying the lead. It's like, oh you've probably heard of this brand. It's like uh am I am I the asshole? Uh |
| Everett | hey Andrew, you need anything I'm gonna head down to the rowing blazers. |
| Andrew | Yeah. I don't know. Maybe that's it. |
| Everett | It's in New York. They've got everything's in New York. Um, anyway. So we've got two watches here, and I and I really like them both. And I think based on your comments that you do too. So we've got a 42 millimeter 5kx uh that comes in blue, and we've got a 38 millimeter 5kx that comes in green. |
| Unknown | I like that. Uh, and it's a British racing |
| Everett | green. Oh Jim |
| Andrew | from Lost is one of their uh ambassadors. Oh |
| Everett | I love Jim. Me too. Hey, look at that fucking guy. |
| Andrew | Yeah, he's somehow way more handsome now than twenty years ago when he was in Lost. |
| Everett | I think he was always a pretty handsome devil. Yeah, but he's |
| Andrew | I mean, there was that whole like he's like Clooney in it right now though. |
| Everett | There was that whole abusive husband vibe to his character, which you know. |
| Andrew | It's a it was a cultural misunderstanding. |
| Everett | Um and both of these colors are great. The blue is like uh I think a just a really honest royal blue. Uh I described the green as a British race and green. I think that's uh accurate enough. They come with they come on bracelets, but they also come with nylon pass-throughs. They these are not fancy, schmancy seatbelt nylon pass-throughs. These are sort of old school, down and dirty, military style nylon pastors. But the nylon pastors come in the opposite color. So if you get the blue watch, you'll get the green. And if you get the green watch, you'll get the blue, which I like. I don't know why I like it, but I think it's fun. Um, we've got rally bezels on both of these. They're just 5k X's. I mean, there's not this is the what Seiko does. They're like, here's this watch that we make and sell a bucket load of. You can use this as your palette. |
| Andrew | You can change the bezel and the |
| Everett | dial. Sort |
| Andrew | of. And you can put text at six o'clock. And and if you really, really want, you may put something on the case back. |
| Everett | Um, gosh, Andrew, what more to say? I I think nothing. Um except that I like these. I think I am you you made a face earlier. You made a face. When I said a 38 millimeter in green, you made a a a a happy face. And I'm with you on that happy face. |
| Andrew | Yes. The green is is good. The blue's good, but a thirty-eight and green. |
| Everett | It's a great size, yeah. Uh I |
| Andrew | I love 38 for this style of watch. |
| Everett | You know, uh so I I do have one qualm about the 38mm 5kx, which is that it does not have the same the the SKX013 had kind of a particular way it did the lugs and the 38mm 5kx excuse-excuse that. It's my only complaint about this watch, uh, which is a really weird complaint. And it's not about this watch, it's about the 38mm 5kx. But |
| Unknown | yeah. Uh can I tell you about rowing blazers |
| Andrew | briefly? Yeah, please. So it is a uh clothing brand and design lab founded by a |
| Everett | design lab. Design lab. Uh |
| Andrew | founded by designer, author, archaeologist, and former former US national team Coxwain. Coxwain? Cox? Coxwain? |
| Everett | Mm-hmm. Jack Carlson. That's the boss of the crew team, right? |
| Andrew | Uh no, that's the uh Oh Oh, the coxsman the coxsman. Coxswain? Coxswain. The coxswain's the collar. I think a coxswain is a |
| Everett | it's a lot of cocks here. |
| Andrew | Vital non-rowing oh yeah, so I thought it was a cox coxswain. Oh, that's how you say it. |
| Everett | Yeah, this is terrific. That's |
| Andrew | not how I would spell it. It's an it's a non-rowing member so it turns |
| Unknown | out a coxwing doesn't exist it's a it's a |
| Everett | concept in your head well it's spelled |
| Andrew | C-O-C-K-S space W A Y-N-E. |
| Everett | Uh-huh. And it's pronounced coxsin. |
| Andrew | Yeah, I guess. Alright. And we're learning |
| Everett | things. That's not how it's spelled. It's spelled C O |
| Andrew | X T S I L W A I N. Uh but I I hear a coxswain. Uh that's I don't know, that's not that word doesn't make sense. Uh anyhow, it's a uh their their whole shtick is uh a a subversive. Subversive? Yeah. Take on preppy. |
| Everett | This is not feel subversive. Nothing about this feels subversive to |
| Andrew | me. A uh, where's the word? They said they uh |
| Everett | D Snyder subversive. Somewhere |
| Andrew | in here it's a very good Eric Wind. Subverting uh preppiness. Uh so it's just uh it's just uh high end uh Abercrombie. |
| Everett | Andrew, I really like that polo on you. It's very subversive. |
| Andrew | Yeah, thank you. Not |
| Unknown | wearing one. You're wearing a 40 |
| Everett | and 20 shirt. I wasn't wearing a shirt earlier. |
| Unknown | Uh oh, wow, we've |
| Andrew | derailed. What's next, buddy. |
| Unknown | Ah, who gosh, who knows? |
| Andrew | Um, |
| Unknown | I want to take some time to talk about this. Um, so |
| Andrew | actually, I need to do some digging. Uh, so I'm going uh to London next month. Um |
| Everett | you you're gonna wind up in London. Yeah, I'm |
| Andrew | gonna we're gonna spend a couple days in London. Uh we we already booked our uh appointment at the Christopher Ward showroom. And now I need to figure out how to go to the doghouse. |
| Everett | What's the doghouse? Studio |
| Andrew | Underdogs show that uh happened at the acquisition of |
| Unknown | Yeah, right. I remember. Why |
| Everett | don't you just email email Richard? I'm going |
| Andrew | to. I just haven't. Okay. |
| Everett | Do you want do you need me to make the connection? Do you have his email address? |
| Andrew | I know how to use internet. |
| Everett | Okay, well, like I have like direct I in fact I have his phone |
| Andrew | I don't. Yeah, I might text him. Okay. Um that might be easier. Uh so Studio Underdog has the O2 Series Gen 2. The O2 series. So we haven't seen a lot of iterative design from Studio Underdog. We've seen we've seen new lines, right? We've seen new dials. This is a slimmer case, bigger power reserve, and new colors. This is a whole this is a a a totally new watch in the version two. Generational |
| Everett | iterations is what you're talking about. Right. We've seen a lot of |
| Andrew | new colors. We've seen like some micro changes, but by and large, Studio Underdog's watches have remained pretty true to form. |
| Unknown | We're introducing new SKUs and or new lines but not improving on price. Yeah. |
| Andrew | Not not uh evolving an existing line. So we have new stuff in the O2 series too. And uh, you know, as much as we liked them before, I they have gotten better. 37 and a half millimeter case, 11.5 thick with a crystal, without the dome sapphire 9.4. 9.4. And this is this is |
| Unknown | for a chronograph. I mean, obviously, no, |
| Andrew | no, these are their manual winding three hands. These are the three-handers. So but it's still nine point four for a manual three hand with that sapphire dial. Uh we have four colorways uh that have come out. One really cool black and red with it like looks like a spaceship, like very tranny in the loom uh a oh what what what would you call that blue |
| Everett | oh this is that's a good question for me |
| Unknown | let me not the dark blue with the red with |
| Andrew | the red uh minute track. Oh. This light blue. |
| Everett | Let me put I d I don't have it up yet, I'm sorry. |
| Unknown | Uh we have the traditional like pink lemonade, |
| Andrew | lemon ombre into pink and then a really, really deep Deep. Yeah, this is this |
| Everett | is a periwinkle. That was the word I was gonna choose. But |
| Andrew | I thought I thought you were gonna say cornflower. |
| Everett | Cornflower is much darker than this. You like |
| Andrew | to say cornflower blue. I don't know why. I quite |
| Everett | or is a specific color. This is not it. I'm |
| Andrew | I you know we've we've discussed my |
| Everett | this is maybe a dusty period called |
| Andrew | probable color blindness. Um |
| Everett | there's just enough purple in there to be parrowing. |
| Andrew | I thought I was gonna say parrow or maybe baby's breath. Isn't baby's breath are those those are blue? Those |
| Everett | are those little flowers. They're the little white ones, I |
| Unknown | think. I thought they were blue. Nope. I think they're the toxic ones, the toxic white ones. |
| Andrew | Yeah, like baby's breath. In |
| Unknown | any event, I think I |
| Andrew | think powder blue or periwinkle, depending |
| Everett | on the light. Okay, so what we have here is |
| Andrew | Ste call it Stephanie, by the |
| Unknown | way. Oh, like Tiffany's |
| Andrew | sister. Yes. The hotter, sluttier |
| Unknown | one. Yeah, that's right. Uh the |
| Andrew | red is really good. It's this really full, metallic-y, uh Merlot-y, yeah, like just gorgeous, luxurious red. And then the rest of the colors totally like all these colors make sense. Every every single one of these you look. |
| Everett | Purple that sort of petrol purple is one of |
| Unknown | the new ones, but along with the red and I really like it. |
| Andrew | You just immediately recognize it as Studio Wonderdog. I think this is a really cool upgrade because we haven't seen true upgrades uh ever? |
| Everett | Yeah. Never. No, this is the first, yeah. |
| Andrew | Um twelve hundred bucks on these. These are gonna the these became available on the seventh. Did you talk about |
| Everett | the new movement? No. So these come with the new Solita SW200-2 M |
| Unknown | Power Plus. So this is the new hand-wound Salida uh with sixty five or sixty whatever some hours of sixty three |
| Andrew | hours. Which I think is interesting for Studio Wonderdog to have secured a an exclusive contract with Siegel and then move away from Siegel. |
| Everett | Well, but I mean this is you know, this isn't |
| Unknown | Siegel space, right? You know, Siegel's got that sort of chronograph space lockdown, but this is it it makes me like Richard cares about movements.. Yeah He doesn't |
| Everett | want to spend the he wants to be economical, but he cares about movements. We we talked about this last year. Like |
| Unknown | who's gonna do this? And |
| Everett | I kind of I think I opined like I don't think I don't think we're |
| Unknown | gonna see a lot of people buying in until for a while. Um, but I think this is now the second watch we've seen that's come out with the new Salita movement, and of course |
| Everett | you've got production timelines or whatever, |
| Unknown | and I don't think Selita did a good job sort of getting these out before they made the announcement. That was a that was our last argument, I think, on the show. Uh with that with that I |
| Andrew | I don't think we argued about it. I think we were confused by it. We were equally confused about how do you launch a product with nothing to support it? Yeah. It's like launching a movie trailer that hasn't gone into production yet. |
| Unknown | And my position was I think they should have sat on it. I think they should have made a couple of of relationships and really pushed hard to have a couple people knock these movements out of |
| Everett | the water. But here we are now, what a |
| Unknown | year later. And okay, this |
| Everett | is interesting. Richard, I like the fact that you're doing this. I like that we got a new movement in here. So this is really cool. I'm into it. |
| Andrew | I I like it. I like everything about it. The new color is great. The old colors are good, but seeing uh an iterative improvement on his watches is also really great. |
| Unknown | Yeah. Um, |
| Everett | I am going to now talk about I think a |
| Unknown | a boring release. Okay. |
| Everett | With that said, it tickled me a little |
| Unknown | bit just like me just like |
| Everett | you uh Oris last year abandoned the Divers 65 |
| Unknown | in lieu of the divers |
| Everett | date and I I think we discussed that sort of decision. You know, |
| Unknown | this watch, this watch was first released |
| Everett | in 1965, thus when Oris sort |
| Unknown | of re-released it, they called it the Diver |
| Everett | 65. I I liked it. I thought that was charming. I am not completely sure why they abandoned that naming convention, but we've now got we've now got the Diversate D, which |
| Unknown | is a watch that I thought Oris |
| Everett | hasn't done a lot with. You know, the Diver 65. |
| Unknown | For five years, it was there was a new Diver 65 every |
| Andrew | week. Every quarter, right? |
| Unknown | You know, or a couple, probably, |
| Everett | you know, and then you've got you've got bronze ones, and you got pink ones, |
| Andrew | every limited edition imaginable. |
| Unknown | And in contrast, now |
| Everett | going on, I think year two of |
| Unknown | the divers date, uh, we still just have the original three configurations, |
| Everett | but Oris has now released a |
| Unknown | regular catalog |
| Everett | model of the divers date |
| Unknown | with an olive green |
| Everett | dial. And it is |
| Unknown | exactly as boring as you'd expect. It is a black bezel, olive green dial, regular catalog release, and it's terrific. It has me |
| Andrew | hot and bothered, and I do not typically get aroused by aurus. Uh this is titillating. |
| Unknown | Um so can I pause talking |
| Everett | about the aurus? Did we talk about the price for the series two 1200 |
| Andrew | bucks. 1200 bucks you interrupted me, but I did say it's 1200 |
| Everett | months. I'm sorry. I just wanted to make sure we got that |
| Unknown | out. So this is still just a |
| Everett | diver's date. There's no difference, but it's got a green doubt, which feels |
| Unknown | very tutor. |
| Andrew | Yeah. I'm |
| Everett | okay with it. I don't mind. I don't mind the approach. They're saying it's not limited. You don't have to try to fucking log into Hodinkee's |
| Unknown | website or something. You don't have to like build |
| Andrew | a chat bot to beat everyone else to the purchase. |
| Unknown | Uh they do have Oris's caliber 733, which |
| Everett | is not in Oras. It's |
| Unknown | it's a Salita 200 uh base model, which has been |
| Everett | uh, you know, I don't know, zhuzged. |
| Unknown | Did I do it right? You did do it right. The |
| Andrew | hip movement and everything too. Which has been zhuzg |
| Unknown | byed Auris. Um still |
| Everett | 12.1 thick. We've got 200 meters of water resistance, which is more than I think the hundred or that the sixty-five often came in. Um |
| Unknown | steel bracelet or tropic rubber, it's great. This |
| Everett | is not anything to tell you |
| Unknown | about besides olive green dial. Right? |
| Andrew | Yeah, and and it's aurus. So date |
| Unknown | date is the only option. So I think that's the only that's the only potential limitation to this watch. You might like this date and or you might like this watch, I think, but |
| Everett | I'd really like to not have a date. |
| Andrew | This watch has so much dialogue that I I feel like the the date is almost necessary. |
| Unknown | And a six o'clock date, and a six o'clock |
| Everett | date that appears in lieu |
| Unknown | of a marker. The six o'clock |
| Everett | marker. So not a true not a true |
| Unknown | diver, which is interesting because they |
| Everett | call it the divers date. And I think there's some limitation to that. I think that's and |
| Andrew | that's why it's divers, uh, because for it to be a diver, |
| Unknown | yeah, it has to meet ISO specs and that six |
| Andrew | o'clock date doesn't meet ISO specs. So the diverse is their loophole. |
| Everett | And you know, Seiko gets around that by way of like you know, several brands get around around that by way of tucking a little loom plot on the outside or it says askew that that |
| Unknown | function or whatever. So uh |
| Everett | they just I don't think Seiko has any six |
| Andrew | o'clock uh date windows on a dive. |
| Unknown | No, but when they do have date windows that appear at |
| Everett | three, they stuff a little loom plot |
| Unknown | out at the side. Yeah. Yeah. So and and other brands |
| Everett | do this too. This is not just Seiko, but um Oris has not done that here. So this is not an ISO spect |
| Unknown | dive watch, but it is a diver's |
| Everett | date. Well now, now it's |
| Andrew | it's lost all appeal appeal to me. Unless it's ISO certified. I'm not interested. Right? |
| Everett | Because when you're sitting in the backyard. There's |
| Unknown | nothing more than bugs me than knowing I can't |
| Everett | go on a dive. Yeah, I mean I'm ISO |
| Andrew | certified. So No, you're |
| Everett | not. I could be. Could maybe. |
| Andrew | I mean, we don't know. There are a lot of ISO specs. |
| Unknown | I could I could fall under some right now. What's next? |
| Andrew | Uh next up, let's I'll let's talk about another boring. Um but also interesting IFL watches the koi fish concept with the Soyosa Shore Mako. I think the Soyosa is a really interesting platform for an IFL watches because we see, you know it's it's just different enough from the typical IFL watches uh design platforms. I like it. And I really like the Soyosa as just a watch in general. I I I think it's cool. I also don't care. Right? It's black koi fish swimming in a circle around the dial. I I think maybe this is the last IFL watches that I talk about. Um kind of like in the way we don't talk about moon swatches anymore because they're still dropping a skew a week. And they're just not they were cool, they remain cool, but they' their their noteworthy factor has been so diluted. |
| Unknown | It's just less interesting, yeah. Yeah. No, you |
| Everett | know, I what's funny is I don't think I've ever |
| Unknown | so I've even probably commented |
| Everett | on the show about oh well, you know, more is more and people are saying, Oh, I'm tired of all these releases. |
| Unknown | I've never felt that way about the moon swatch. But IFL collabs, I I'm like another fucking IFL. |
| Andrew | Okay. I I like 'em. I think they're I think selling |
| Everett | watches. I think I think the Soyosa |
| Andrew | platform is really interesting because we see so many on the what's it, the Breville? |
| Everett | Breville? The the Seville. |
| Andrew | Oh yeah. Yeah, Sevilla. Uh and what's the other one they do a ton on? Um |
| Unknown | I don't know. There's like two watches |
| Andrew | that that IFL watches does a lot of collaborations on or special editions on. So seeing branching out into the Soyosa, I think is neat. I think it's cool for Citizen to get this this watch a little bit more uh publicity because I think this is a like a true sleeper hit in the way of affordable watches. Not this this particular one, but the Soyosa in general. |
| Unknown | Yep. You |
| Andrew | know I'm gonna start kicking you. I mean |
| Everett | I I don't know. I'm just tired of I I I don't know I just it's not it you know I think the other thing is this is I just it's not a type of watch that I want. I just don't want it. Like I I appreciate what it is. I love the fact that they're each hand painted. Like that's fucking rad, but I don't want a hand painted dial. I just don't want it. It's super affordable too. I mean, |
| Andrew | yeah, they're under a thousand bucks for a hand painted limited edition of 200. Um, I mean, the Soyosa is like 400 bucks. |
| Everett | Yeah, I mean, you know, you get a limited edition from Hamilton and it's like |
| Andrew | twelve thousand. Well, no, |
| Everett | but you you know they make twelve thousand |
| Andrew | of them. And and they haven't really done anything, |
| Everett | right? Like they changed the |
| Andrew | strap to the one that you wanted on it anyway. |
| Everett | Or there's like or there's like a you know, uh this is a different colored dial. Like these are hand painted. Like someone did that. I can appreciate that. So I'm not really |
| Andrew | I feel like you're arguing against yourself right now. |
| Everett | I'm trying not to poo poo it. I'm just, it's not my thing. So that's what I'm trying to make clear. I I can appreciate what it is without having any interest in this fucking weird watch. Fair? |
| Andrew | Okay. Fair. Uh |
| Everett | let's talk about something I do like. |
| Unknown | Let's talk about something I do like. And in fact, |
| Everett | of all the releases this |
| Unknown | week that either one of us sent links |
| Everett | to, this is the only one that I was like, |
| Unknown | this is really fucking cool. |
| Everett | Um temporal works. We talked about Temporal Works last year when they released their um what do they call them? When they released, I can't remember what they call them, but basically it's a paddock 565 remake that |
| Unknown | they released with a sector dial. You |
| Everett | know, it was polished. It felt very much like, yeah, this is this could have been a paddock. Uh, this could have been a 565. 565 is a really cool model that paddock did a lot of stuff with. In fact, if you look up paddock 565s, you're gonna see |
| Unknown | eight gazillion dollars. |
| Everett | They're all different, right? There's like uh they just had so many different configurations because this is a boutique watch and they were doing boutique things with this boutique watch. Um, and temporal works is so if you don't know this, is a watch brand that sort of popped up last year from Armory's co-founder Mark Cho with watch designer Elliot Hammer. Um, and here they've taken that same platform, which is a 37mm 565 remake, and they've blasted it, put some pilot hands on it, and they're calling it the series a rambler. |
| Unknown | This is basically a blasted field watch |
| Everett | pilot field pilot |
| Unknown | 565, which is the weirdest thing, and it works really, really well. In |
| Everett | fact, I remember I didn't really love the |
| Unknown | first what oh, series A is what |
| Everett | are they called? It the series A, yeah, the sector. They released two uh sector dials when they did that, and then they released a red dial. And I think we we |
| Unknown | both agreed that the |
| Everett | red dial was the most compelling of the three, if I remember right. But this is polished, very sort of |
| Unknown | austere, and I just wasn't |
| Everett | wild about any of them. I was like, okay, this is cool, kind of expensive. Um this one on the other hand, the Rambler. I'm digging it. I'm digging it. So we've got painted brass dials, matte finished brass dials. |
| Andrew | In one of the photographs they have a misprinted dial featured. |
| Everett | Oh, do they? Yeah, look. It's got that extra little |
| Andrew | I wonder if that's an AI No, that looks like a product photo. |
| Everett | Uh looks that you know what I think that is, Andrew? I think that that is a retouching error. |
| Andrew | Oh perhaps, yeah. I think that's a retouching |
| Everett | error. That's really funny. Um |
| Andrew | I I saw that and I was like, why is that there? This isn't a novelty watch. And then in other photographs of it or renderings, that's not there. So it's |
| Everett | Yeah, I think it's a retouching error. Like uh like a an artifact. |
| Andrew | Yeah. Um so |
| Unknown | it these come in two colors, a black |
| Everett | and a red bean. Both of these are matte finished. Uh we've got very zin |
| Unknown | style pilot hands. |
| Everett | Um we've got you know, at at the forty fives or maybe at the forties, we've got these |
| Unknown | white lines that kind of break up the dial because |
| Everett | the dial's so dirty but not |
| Andrew | exactly. That's right. Yeah. That's |
| Everett | right. Um like an interpretation of |
| Andrew | a sector dial that's off uh off axis. |
| Unknown | That's right. The so the black one comes in |
| Everett | a like a nylon green, and the red bean comes on sort of a khaki |
| Unknown | uh strap. I think these are textile |
| Everett | on leather. Um, but they also come |
| Unknown | with a khaki. Looks like it's a |
| Andrew | suede strap. Oh, yeah, I think it's Alcantera. |
| Everett | Yeah. So it's it's soft gray Alcantera with a NATO option. But you can also get a blasted |
| Unknown | stibe mesh bracelet |
| Everett | for 250 bucks. And that |
| Andrew | is the way. Dude, it looks |
| Unknown | so good. A blasted stybe. I never |
| Everett | thought, like, oh, I need this, |
| Unknown | but I need a blasted style. |
| Everett | It looks awesome. These |
| Unknown | are really great. They are not inexpensive |
| Everett | considering you're getting sort of a pretty standard bog |
| Unknown | standard stainless steel watch with kind of |
| Everett | a boring movement. Salita 210. Um these coming in at like what twenty twenty |
| Andrew | six seventy. Twenty six seventy. |
| Everett | I think they're priced too high. |
| Unknown | Uh oh |
| Andrew | wait, but twenty six seventy is the is the one last. What are these? Yeah, |
| Everett | 2500. Oh, okay. I think |
| Unknown | these are priced too high. Um but I do really like it. |
| Everett | I just wish it was. Yeah, one of these comments here on the Hodenki says looks more like a paddock 565 crossed with a Zen 556. And |
| Andrew | it does look like a 556. It's not undone. It's um oh what's the brand that does watches just like this? I can't think of it. We talked about them quarterly |
| Everett | I don't know. Uh it |
| Andrew | doesn't matter. This this this is a familiar watch. This this kind of austere is it's kind of like a new version, like a new era of uh minimalism that has you know we're we're seeing some wash rinse repeats of design aesthetics. |
| Everett | Yeah. And and you know, cool company, cool people, cool design, probably some lasting appeal in that sense because of who's making it. So maybe some value there when we talk about like what kind of value is my watch going to retain. With that said, I I do think that they're I think they're kind of reaching for the stars on that price. They'll sell these and that's fine, but I think it's a much I if this was 1700 bucks, I'd be like, this is rad. |
| Andrew | Yeah. Uh, but for $2,500, |
| Everett | I'm kind of likeike Yeah, |
| Andrew | it's it it's it does give you a little bit of pause because that's a that's on different segment, right? |
| Everett | They're ten millimeters thick, uh and the side |
| Unknown | profile on this looks terrific.. |
| Andrew | Yes The side profile looks terrific. |
| Everett | I think it's a wrist hugger. Um, but yeah, that's that's my thoughts. I really like the watch. I don't really like the price. Um I'm whole home at best on the movement. |
| Andrew | Yeah, I I think the price is hard to justify against everything else we know about the brand and what we know about the watch. Andrew, |
| Everett | we are at the point where we start making decisions. |
| Andrew | I've already closed the tabs. |
| Unknown | So you're done. And I think I'm good. |
| Everett | There was, you know, the only other thing I really um thought maybe I'd try to get to was the new cocktail times, but they're new cocktail times. |
| Andrew | They're just new cocktail times. They're all gorgeous as we'd expect them to be. |
| Everett | And they're fine. They're fine. And then a new light blue longing conquest heritage Central Power Reresve which, is a watch I should hate and don't. It |
| Unknown | comes, it's a beautiful dial color. |
| Andrew | Stephanie blue. Yeah. |
| Unknown | Precisely. Um so |
| Everett | yeah, Andrew, uh uh other things. What do you got |
| Andrew | okay. Put your hand in my pocket. I |
| Unknown | will not. Uh okay, we'll at least feel |
| Andrew | this. Okay. |
| Everett | Oh. Okay. So I was at the store. |
| Andrew | I need to get a couple new pairs of shorts because it's summertime, it's hot. I'm like, I just needed to get some new shorts. And I'm like browsing and I see I see these shorts on the rack. And they're Callaway golf shorts with a nine inch inseam and I immediately feel them and they do not feel like they look. They have a almost like chinoy kind of linen look to them, like just a little bit of shine. They're golf shorts, right? Yeah. They're intended to be like almost like as dressy as shorts can get. Sure. Right? With a little bit of shine. But the material is that of swim trunks. |
| Everett | Yeah, they're but they're very uh very light. |
| Andrew | Light, they're stretchy. Uh so I got these for like 27 bucks a pair. Uh right now on the Callaway website. They are 40 bucks a pair. Uh man, I I who |
| Unknown | where did you buy them? Who's retailing them? Nordstrom |
| Andrew | Rack. Oh, okay. They had M tracks. They had khaki, navy, and black. I got a khaki and a navy. Cause I just I wanted a few more pairs of shorts. And I felt them and I was like, oh, these are gonna be magical. This is as close to like wearing athletic shorts out in public as I will ever get. Yeah. Cause like I'm not I'm a grown up. Uh I'm not gonna wear basketball shorts or running shorts in public for not participating in those activities. |
| Unknown | Yeah. Uh these |
| Andrew | are terrific. They're stretchy, they're comfortable, they breathe. Highly recommend. If I like it. If you're looking for some new shorts that are just like pure comfort but don't look like they're pure comfort, I think this is like the boy version of Lululemon leggings. |
| Everett | And the price is right. It's hard to it's hard to |
| Unknown | Yeah, and they look great. Yeah they look I |
| Andrew | mean as close as you can as close as shorts can get to dress attire. |
| Unknown | Got a quick I got a quick uh story. |
| Unknown | So my children right now are at |
| Everett | the theater the the like theater that has live people on a stage making |
| Unknown | noises with their mouth holes. Uh |
| Everett | and donkeys. My my |
| Unknown | middle child, my middle child who is |
| Everett | the most rebellious, |
| Unknown | uh, came out in a |
| Everett | t-shirt and basketball shorts and Crocs. |
| Unknown | Tracks. And we're like, Lou, you need to go |
| Everett | put on a pair of pants. You're going to the theater, like, you gotta wear pants. And of course, we live in new jeans, so there's gonna be all types, but it's like |
| Andrew | patterned pajama pants, didn't he? No. |
| Everett | No. He came out in a pair of sharp jeans. |
| Andrew | Look at that. Yeah. But he |
| Everett | had taken off his t-shirt and put on |
| Unknown | a sleeveless basketball |
| Everett | shirt. And we're like, |
| Andrew | how did you go forward and backward in one movement? |
| Everett | It's pure rebellion. He knew exactly |
| Unknown | what he was doing. And we were like, you need to go try again. |
| Everett | And he, of course, harromps and |
| Unknown | stomps his feet a little bit, buddy. |
| Everett | It's like, gosh guy |
| Andrew | were fifty percent right both times. |
| Unknown | It was it's a power move, you know, with that one, but I was just |
| Unknown | like, yeah. At some point he's gotta realize |
| Andrew | like buck all you want. Yes, you're not gonna win. |
| Unknown | You mentioned the your comment about I'm a |
| Everett | grown-up and I was like, yeah, right? Like at some point we just like you're gonna go to the like can you just for the next three hours of your life not look like an asshole. Uh |
| Andrew | no, that's an impossibility for me. Uh most people I think can can do it though. |
| Everett | I've got another thing, Andrew. Do me. You're not gonna be able to link this one. |
| Andrew | Because I'm not doing the notes. That's also |
| Unknown | true. Uh I have spent the last, I don't know, |
| Everett | and maybe you can maybe you can verify or validate or correct me on this, but I think for now about four |
| Unknown | months, I've been looking for a |
| Everett | motorcycle, a specific motorcycle, uh, and been struggling with it. So what I |
| Unknown | did is I I just decided |
| Everett | I decided, you know, I want to do two things. One, I want to purchase a motorcycle, but but two, more importantly, I want to learn about motorcycle repair maintenance etc. |
| Andrew | Do you have like Zen and The Art of Morotcycle Repair. I don't and |
| Everett | I've never even read it. I don't know. But I need to get into that. I need to I do need to check that out. |
| Andrew | Somebody it was in somebody's other thing on the show. |
| Unknown | Oh yeah, that's right. I just don't remember |
| Andrew | who it was. So um I |
| Unknown | I have I do know the footnotes, but yes. So I I am going to I am going to just very briefly |
| Everett | talk about my philosophy here when I look, because it it changed. At very |
| Unknown | first, I was looking for a dual |
| Everett | sport motorcycle and I quickly kind of went |
| Unknown | away from that. But there are |
| Everett | a number of there are a number of dual sport motorcycles |
| Unknown | that are very well supported with the aftermarket, |
| Everett | super easy to work on, yada yada yada. I quickly kind of went away from that towards a more traditional street motorcycle, but |
| Unknown | I was looking for something kind of specific. |
| Everett | I was looking for something that was well supported with aftermarket, right? That was a big one. Uh, that was going to be |
| Unknown | mechanically simple |
| Everett | and straightforward. So that locks |
| Andrew | you into an era. Sure. |
| Everett | That locks you into sort of like 70s, |
| Andrew | 80s, 90s. Correct Emoto. |
| Unknown | Exactly right, Andrew. And and and really, |
| Everett | you know, you getting into the eighties, |
| Unknown | you start you know you start getting |
| Andrew | some computerization and some digital. So like you're you're kind of in the seven like if sixties exists, but you're you're in a y sixty year old bike. |
| Unknown | And then and you know, so one of the things that comes |
| Everett | up a lot is the C B five hundred four, which |
| Unknown | is one of the best motorcycles ever made, |
| Everett | blah blah blah. You know, certainly you're and I'm going Japanese too, right? |
| Unknown | Like, like let's just get that out of the way. We're going Japanese. |
| Andrew | I'm turning Japanese. I think I'm turning Japanese for many |
| Unknown | reasons, but prime, you |
| Everett | know, price and price |
| Unknown | and and longevity, right? Japanese motorcycles in that era |
| Everett | were the most reliable motorcycles on earth. I don't care. Like Harley. It it doesn't matter. Japanese. I mean, |
| Andrew | Harley's are known for being bags |
| Unknown | of ass. So like they're a |
| Andrew | constant project. I I |
| Unknown | start kind of and and now I'm like getting a little bit more into the |
| Everett | weeds. Like what do I want? The 454, I the reason I went away or the 500s, the CB504, the reason I went away from that is is really simple. Four |
| Unknown | carburetors. Yeah. So |
| Everett | what I want is four stroke, two carburetors, |
| Unknown | because carburetors, old carburetors, |
| Everett | need service. And four |
| Unknown | is exactly, exactly mathematically |
| Everett | speaking, two times as many as two. |
| Andrew | Yes. And carb carb rebuild, though therapeutic. Pain in the ass. |
| Everett | Kind of a pain in the ass. So uh I I finally I settled on uh |
| Unknown | oh i settled on a |
| Everett | motorcycle that i've since this has been about four months now fallen in love with this motorcycle |
| Unknown | uh the idea of it philosophically I've fallen in love with it. What it is is the |
| Everett | Yamaha XS650. What this |
| Unknown | was was a Yamaha that was built to compete directly with in the 70s kind of the kind of the B's knees of the motorcycle |
| Everett | world world, which were the British twins. So, you know, Norton's, Bonneville's, etc. The Yamahawks. |
| Andrew | Indians still fighting in that it is still a competitor in that era, right? |
| Everett | Yeah, I but I don't think I mean India's American, right? |
| Andrew | Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So these are British |
| Everett | twins, right? So and and |
| Unknown | British twins, very cool motorcycles, just cool as shit, but fucking pains in the asses. Leaky, high maintenance, sons of a bitches. |
| Everett | Uh so Yamaha comes out with their XS |
| Unknown | six fifty, which is the same thing. It's a 360-degree, |
| Everett | meaning the uh meaning the pistons go at the |
| Unknown | same time, vibraty, but super reliable, fantastic engine based |
| Everett | on old German architecture, |
| Unknown | and it crushes. It crushes. They sell a |
| Everett | bunch of them. They're way more reliable. So I'm like, |
| Unknown | okay, this is this is the motorcycle |
| Everett | for me. I've now spent the better part of the past four months looking for something specific. I want one that |
| Unknown | is not ready to go. C |
| Everett | Iause want to get it ready to go. |
| Unknown | But it's also not so |
| Everett | not ready to go that |
| Unknown | I'm going to be in over my head. So that's tough. That's a tough uh needle to |
| Everett | thread, right? Yeah. What I don't want is one that's like |
| Unknown | tits already. Even though it'll need maintenance, |
| Everett | I'm not gonna have done a lot of that work that I kind of want to do. So and it's gonna be like they're expensive, right? You're |
| Unknown | looking at five, six, seven grand to |
| Everett | get one that's like in really good shape. |
| Unknown | And then even the ones that are kind of shitty are |
| Everett | like twenty five hundred. So fourth of July, morning of fourth of July, |
| Andrew | I know I pull up Facebook Marketplace. |
| Everett | I pull up Facebook Marketplace and |
| Unknown | I find one. It's in Brownsville, which |
| Everett | is about a half hour from here, and it says 500 |
| Unknown | bucks and got some electrical |
| Everett | issues, but everything else is great. And I message the guy and I go, Hey, does |
| Unknown | it turn over? And he's like, Look, dude, |
| Everett | everything works. Everything |
| Unknown | works. It's a little rusty because it's |
| Everett | been outside for the last year, but the |
| Unknown | engine is perfect. The |
| Everett | only problem is last time I rode it, I was on the freeway and the wiring loom caught on fire. And I was like, |
| Andrew | Yeah, that's just a minor thing, not a big deal. |
| Everett | Well, you know, f it's a 1976, 50-year-old wires, right? And I'm like, okay, I'm coming to you. So I call Andrew and I'm like, hey, I need your truck. Andrew's like, what the fuck are you talking about? And I'm like, just don't ask questions. |
| Andrew | I didn't ask many questions after that. |
| Everett | I came and got your truck and I went and got a motorcycle. And now I own that motorcycle, Andrew. And that's my other thing for the week. Is I at the age of 45, full midlife crisis, have purchased a 50-year-old motorcycle that I'm gonna have to repair |
| Unknown | before I get it running so that |
| Everett | I can learn how to ride a motorcycle. |
| Andrew | Yeah you just that was actually a I think a perfect I I'm not polyopsis of what a midlife crisis is. I spent the last four months searching for an impossible to find motorcycle. Found it, bought it. Shit don't work. Last time it worked, it was on fire. Uh now I'm gonna rebuild it. And then after that, I'm gonna learn how to write it. If |
| Unknown | it i if there's anybody in my life that I would that I would believe could do this, it's me. I'm just I'm gonna say with zero hubris. |
| Andrew | You're gonna get that shit running and sell it. |
| Everett | Might who cares? Isn't that the you know |
| Andrew | I don't think you're gonna write it. I maybe |
| Everett | not. I don't know. I might. I feel like |
| Andrew | you would look terrible on a motorcycle. Have you seen |
| Everett | my hair? You you like being comfortable |
| Andrew | far too much to sit on a motorcycle. |
| Everett | Well, but so here's here's one possibility. I think this is a third possibility. Uh |
| Unknown | that I rebuild it, |
| Everett | I get it running, I make it look |
| Unknown | gorgeous, I sell it for more money than |
| Everett | it's probably worth, and then I take that money and I go |
| Unknown | get something that is reliable |
| Everett | and comfortable and modern. |
| Andrew | An arcimoto. And then ride an |
| Unknown | archimoto. That's a third |
| Everett | possibility. But honestly, I I |
| Unknown | it we'll see. We'll see. Time will tell. I |
| Andrew | I it's always the process with me. |
| Everett | You know how that I struggle to imagine |
| Andrew | you on a motorcycle more than like once. |
| Everett | Yeah, that feels mean. It's not |
| Andrew | mean. It's objective. Sitting in a saddle, though liberating and freeing, is not particularly comfortable. You like to be comfortable. |
| Everett | I mean I also like to be uncomfortable. I've run twenty marathons. |
| Unknown | Yeah, almost speechless. You were almost speechless. Just |
| Andrew | to say you did. Yeah, but you didn't |
| Unknown | run 20 to say you did, Andrew. You did. You you run |
| Andrew | No, you know you ran the 20th, not because you wanted to, but because you were like, I gotta get to 20. |
| Everett | I don't think so. No. No. I liked it. There's something, there's that I've got a little bit of like this |
| Unknown | is cool. I want to be doing this thing that's |
| Everett | slightly uncomfortable and hard. |
| Andrew | Uh I I wish you well. I think it's I think it's a really cool project and I look forward to being able to watch it uh unfold. |
| Everett | I'm excited to send pictures to the group thread and videos of it revving for the first time, etc. |
| Andrew | It's all your new wiring. |
