Synopsis

In this episode of the 40 and 20 WatchClicker podcast, hosts Andrew and Everett discuss the latest releases from Watches and Wonders. They cover a wide range of new timepieces, including Breitling's Navitimer Cosmonaute worn on the Artemis II mission, Tudor's 100th-anniversary releases including the unusual Monarch and updated Black Bay 58, and Monta's new 40mm Noble alongside their commitment to maintaining the 38.5mm size. The hosts express particular enthusiasm for Jaeger-LeCoultre's Master Control Chronometer with integrated bracelet, praising its finishing and value proposition despite the premium price point.

Additional highlights include Bulgari's ultra-thin Octofinissimo releases (including a minute repeater and new 37mm size), Oris's vintage-inspired Star Edition, and Bremont's Supernova chronograph destined for the moon. Throughout the discussion, Andrew and Everett debate design choices, sizing decisions, and market positioning while maintaining their signature casual, humorous tone. The episode concludes with "other things" segments featuring Andrew's recommendation of the card game "Throw the Burrito" and Everett's enthusiasm for Harbor Freight's Icon 35-piece mini ratchet kit.

Speaker
Andrew Hello, fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to 40 and 20, the WatchClicker podcast with your hosts, Andrew and my good friend Everett. Here, we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Everett, how are you? I'm good.
Everett Thank you. You're welcome. I'm
Andrew always concerned for your well-being and general
Everett I'm good. We have status. That it's still early spring. It's still early spring. So had some like wind and some moisture and just like general, like more unpleasant than it really should be. Like it's like
Andrew thunderstorm in the last week. Yeah, yeah.
Everett So um which is fine. This happens every year, right? You don't know exactly when it's going to happen, but it happens every year. You know, baseball is kind of in full swing right now, which has makes baseball a little tough. Full swing. Yeah, because
Andrew you swing out baseball. Yeah, that's right. That was a
Everett Yep. Unintentional. Yeah, right. Um and so that's been a little like moving games around and like you know, you know, it's really difficult. I've always like complained when things get canceled later than they should get canceled. Where I'm like, they should get canceled. But being in the position of like I'm a small group that has to make those decisions, sometimes it's like, let's hold off. We should really hold off because rescheduling the things is a giant it's like maybe we can. Like let's wait, wait, maybe like we would hate to cancel it, have to go through the the work of rescheduling and then look outside and have it be beautiful. Like yesterday we were talking like do we need to cancel and we waited and we had time. We played the game. We got the game and didn't have to reschedule it, you know. Well well. So anyway, that's that.
Andrew That's always the the challenge of early season baseball. And makeup games are the worst because it's like if you can get it rescheduled, it's like, okay, well we have a makeup game tomorrow. So say goodbye to your Thursday afternoon.
Everett That's right. Yeah. That's right. So uh but any event, yeah, doing really well. Um enjoying enjoying my life. Mariner Swept Houston, which golly, I love it when that happens. Um yeah. How are you, Andrew?
Andrew I'm good. I'm still a little cold. I just spent the last two and a half hours outside. Um and this field that we practice at is right at the base of a hill. And because it's an athletic complex,
Everett do you guys practice the kids sports? ATA. Oh yeah.
Andrew Which is windier than kids sports. Kids sports at least has the protection of the building and the the stands. So if you get a north-south wind, you're screwed. Right. And we often have a north-south. But uh here there's we we play at ATA so there's like a you know three sides unprotected right at the base of a hill. So we get just whipped with wind. Even in the beating sun, it is still kind of a cold field.
Everett Yeah. Uh so I spent two and a half
Andrew hours in that, and it wasn't like it rained a little bit, but it was just
Everett Unpleasant. It was just unpleasant. Yeah. Tis the season. And and and when it gets and when you get cold, you kind of stay cold.
Andrew Yeah. Yeah. Cause I didn't I didn't I did not have time to like take that warm-up shower when I got home. Uh, I had to go right into like you need to eat dinner and you need to do homework and here's all this shit that you need to put away that you just for some reason aren't putting away. And uh yeah, and just like that rigamarole. And and now here we are. So I still haven't done my warm up shower, so I'm still like just chilled.
Everett Totes. Um but you
Andrew know again such is life. Such is life.
Everett Um, well, in any event, we're not here to talk about kids sports or weather. We're rather we're here to talk about watches.
Unknown And this is Watches and
Everett Wonders. This is a big week we're for watches. Yeah, you know. I assume you y know, we didn't discuss this, but we did the thing we always did, which is we each picked a handful of our favorite releases. But that said, I I mean, I think in the last three days there have been
Andrew ten thousand ten0
Everett watches released. And a lot of really cool shit. So um you know I I think
Andrew but it's watches and wonders, so a lot of it's in the realm of unobtainium.
Everett Some of the stuff, yeah, that's right. Some of the stuff that we have on our list is low-hanging fruit, fine. Some of the stuff is like just uh you know, I could tell Andrew liked it that watch, so we put it on his list and and vice versa. So um you're gonna get kind of like I don't I don't want to commit to this being my favorite watches from Watches and Wonders because I think time. Yeah. That's right. These are the watches that at the time I prepared for this show seemed the most talk about that's a that's a phrase talkaboutable
Andrew I agree uh uh Andrew do
Everett you want to get us started i in yeah, in on in our
Andrew in our time honored tradition, um I'm gonna I'm gonna kick us off. Uh and I'm gonna start kind of with a follow-up.
Everett Uh-oh. Hang on.
Andrew To our conversation last week where we talked about or was it it had to have been two weeks ago. Uh last it doesn't matter when. When we talked about the watches that that the Artemis crew members were wearing. And we talked about uh how all of the astronauts were wearing
Everett I think that was last week. Was it? God,
Andrew the the things that it's been a long couple weeks for me. Um we talked about how they were all wearing a brightling, which was clearly product placement in some way, right? It wasn't like these totally disparate people all settled on a Navatimer and it's not like all astronauts buy their own Brightling because that's what the cool kids wear because they all have X33s and and moon watches and I think the X thirty three is like just the coolest fucking thing in the world. Yeah,
Everett it's really neat. I I really want
Andrew one. Um but they they're kinda hard to come by these days. Uh
Everett are they? Yeah, they're expensive.
Andrew Um and there's there's like limited production of the current iteration. Um so I I I haven't looked into it a whole lot because it's not it's a little bit more that I would want to spend on that watch. Like there's other watches in that $5,000 category that I want $5,000 worth more than that watch. But I but I'd like to be an astronaut and just have one handed to me. Uh, I think that would be cool.
Everett It would be cool. I mean, it would also be cool to be an astronaut.
Andrew Yeah. Yeah. Like that's a double victory right there. So anyway, uh the Brightling. So Brightling has now that their uh cosmonut Artemis II has uh traversed the moon. Transversed or traversed? Transversed, right? Because it it went past and then came back.
Everett You know, we stay away from politics on this show, Andrew.
Andrew You're right. We do. Um it has gone to a green screened uh sound and movie stage. Um they put them in a capsule for 10 days, faked a bunch of imagery, uh, and returned. They are unveiling their new cosmonaut model that was unveiled on Artemis. And um frankly, it's a it's an avatar. It's a cosmonaut. Uh it's it is just a special edition, and I freaking love it with Artemis imagery on the case back. Uh, so spec sheet on this, it's exactly what you'd expect. It's a 41 millimeter case, it's 13 thick steel case, it's a blue meteorite dial, 30 meters of water resistance. Uh either oh no no so on a blue alligator strap, it's the BO2 movement, cost certified. We know we know what this watch is. But it's the special edition for the Artemis missions, um, as worn, not these particular ones that you'll buy, but as worn by the crew of the Artemis II, who has uh just recently returned from their mission to the dark side of the moon.
Everett Yeah, I I I mean uh not
Everett to put n not to challenge your not to
Everett challenge your assa uh assertions because yeah, yeah, I I think you're right, this is very much a Nava timer. It is a 24-hour NAVA
Everett timer, which is notable, I think, in and of itself. So um rather than being on a standard 12 hour the hour
Everett hand goes around once just once per day. So I can't I don't know who it was.
Everett I think one of the
Everett astronauts mentioned that they kept this
Everett on Met time and that that was the watch they used for for
Everett um what mission elapsed time. So um
Andrew read uh Weissman, the the mission commander.
Everett There you go. So yeah, I mean it it's a it's a like you said, Andrew, it's uh a
Everett special edition Navitimer, but I think that in and of itself, that twenty-four hour time, and this is
Everett sort of the cosmonaut watch, yeah, you know, I I I I think maybe to to your point though, right? Like I do wish this was like a little like
Andrew it's it just looks like an
Everett avtimer. Yeah, but you know what? I
Andrew I I got I think I respect the game because the moon watch just looks like a moon watch. Right. There's nothing particularly special about it. Sure. But it continues to be. Uh and I I think that's maybe a move that they're trying to to to do here is it it's just it's just the watch, right?
Everett Yeah. We don't need to do
Andrew anything special with it because it's already so special that astronauts wear it.
Everett I do I I don't really like that it's like blue meteorite and just like
Andrew Yeah, I can do without the meteorite. Uh
Everett like w i it doesn't feel like an instrument to me.
Andrew Not with a meteorite dial, no. It
Everett feels like it feels like a sexy watch. Like
Unknown I mean I say that with notwithstanding
Everett the slide rule and everything. It yeah. Yeah. I wish it was a little bit more stoic
Andrew than get the nava timer. I
Everett mean Won wa
Andrew I I think it's a it's a cool special edition. It's I I'm also glad that there's not any more speculation on what the like now we
Everett know. Yeah. It's they were
Andrew all gifted these and said wear these to and fro the moon.
Everett Uh Tudor released a bunch of shit. This is
Andrew boy did they. The hundredth anniversary
Everett of Tudor, I understand. Uh w with that said, Tudor's sort of made a point of saying, Oh, we're not gonna we're not gonna uh
Everett have a big masturbatory
Everett 100-year celebration, which I'm also kind of like, why not?
Andrew Yeah. Like why the fuck not? Anyway,
Everett whatever. They did release a bunch of Watches and Wonders stuff this year. So uh we're not going to talk about all of them. Uh but I would like to talk just briefly about I think their most interesting release, uh, which is the Monarch. So this is a watch that
Unknown is uh sort
Everett of a homage
Everett to the earlier days of
Everett Tudor. With that said, it's a very, very modern watch. I I've said Tudor is I I said recently that tutor
Everett should be weirder. Like I want tutor to be weirder. This is weird. And I
Everett I don't dislike it, but I it's maybe not the direction I was thinking when I said that. Um, what do we have? We have a 39 millimeter uh sport watch, very sporty. It's got a California dial, which always sort of feels a little dressy, but this is not a dress watch. Rather, it's a
Everett vintage-cued sport
Everett watch that's kind of weird. Um it
Unknown is. It's like
Everett BB58 size, which is to say it's like 12 thick and 39 millimeters wide. So kind of a big watch, not a big watch, but a beefy sporty watch. And it's got weird,
Unknown it's got weird angles. It
Everett is an oddly angled watch. Kind of a weird release from Tudor, Andrew.
Andrew Yes, it is all over the map. The the angles read like 60s and 70s, sport watch. The dial reads like 1920s, but with a California dial flare, small seconds, like this is all over the map. And then and then the bracelet reads like 90s tag hoyer with the interesting like pyramid like center lengths on the bracelet. Whoa.
Everett Yeah. Yeah. I mean it does feel a little hodgepodgy. Um this
Andrew this was designed by committee. Two maybe
Everett tutor has done some interesting stuff, so uhypically uh or or yeah, atypically tutor's given this a um view through case back which is I I mean does do they do see through gu I mean have there been other there must have been.
Andrew I can't name any that aren't like LEs off the top of my head.
Everett And you know, the this the typical sort of Tudor Kennisi stuff is usually pretty pretty boring, but this has a very, very finely finished MT5662-2U
Everett caliber, which is a new caliber
Everett for Tudor, and it is um really well decorated. It's uh pretty uh Code of Genev, and um it's pretty, it's a a lovely movement, and you can see it when you turn the watch over, which for Tudor is
Andrew you don't have to pull the case back. That's not not
Everett something that happens very often. Um yeah I uh I don't know, man. I I don't dislike it.
Andrew Can can I say we've got like go like
Everett black markers on this copper brushed copper. That's a very dark champagne.
Andrew Yeah, this is it's gone bad. That's right. This is apple cider.
Everett That's right. with
Andrew it. The one thing that my eyes locked on to and I could not overcome is the attached Roman numerals on the eleven. I don't know why. I hate it. I hate it. Hate it. Interesting.
Everett It's not something I had noticed. I now that I'm looking at it, I don't like it, but uh it's not something that had caught my eye.
Andrew I I I looked at this watch, I'm like, ooh, small seconds, I kinda dig the little bit of uh like kind of conflict in the angles and the roundness. Sure. And then I've I got on that 11 and it just it reminds me of like coach or Louis Vuitton or the like a fashion brand kind of logo thing. Uh and none of the other Roman numerals are attached, right? You know, I obviously I understand the only uh other one could have been the the two, but they didn't if if they had stacked the two and like done the the the horizontal lines to make it a connected two
Everett yeah and then connected the eleven like Sure.
Andrew Like connect them but but give them proper
Everett kerning. Yeah, yeah.
Andrew Uh I I
Everett it's a decision. I don't hate it. It's I
Andrew I can't uh I'm not I'm not
Everett I'm not like super high on it or anything, but it doesn't bother me as much as it bothers you.
Andrew The dude cannot abide that.
Unknown The other thing I note about this watch,
Everett this is the first tutor, the first in-house tutor movement with a small seconds. So and the small seconds and six are lovely. I I like them in this. They've done they've done a good job with this. I don't know. You know, they're from
Andrew the two and ten down. I really like this dial. Yeah. Uh it's got this really, really lovely vertical brushing in that apple cider, not champagne color. The black on the on the markers like just pops in
Everett a black. Yeah, pops
Andrew in a way that you you it's kind of
Everett it's striking. Um but man
Andrew that that eleven o'clock marker
Everett marked at six o'clock above the small seconds, it says master chronometer, and that does seem to be
Everett where tutor's going these days
Everett right their tutor is emphasizing as of late timekeeping uh precise timekeeping which is nice right you've they've shifted to like really heavy emphasis on in-house production and
Everett and and and it seems like they're
Everett doing that right, which is to say we're gonna do it in-house, meaning we're in control and we're gonna take control and be accurate. And I like that. I like that.
Andrew I really like that. And I think that's an interesting place for tutor to explore and maybe corner the market on and and maybe step out of the Rolex shadow in a little way, or a little bit of a way, and sort of
Everett define themselves as independent to
Andrew to Rolex. They're no longer the little brother. They
Everett are standing on their own master chronometer. And I I think unfortunately that'll mean Tutor will push a little bit further up market because this the monarch is coming in at what six six grandes. Yeah, fifty-eight seventy-five. Yeah. Yeah. Uh
Andrew and keep my money and do away with that 11 o'clock marker.
Everett Andrew, what's next? Uh Braymont.
Everett Never heard of him. A
Andrew lot of people haven't. Uh a lot of people have heard of them in various iterations. Uh they are or have uh released the supernova chronograph in partnership with Astrolab
Everett I don't know why. I no, I do too. I
Everett didn't read this book. But I thought you I thought you were going somewhere with that.
Andrew Yeah. Me too. I don't I I had to be really,
Everett really intentional about saying what I was reading
Andrew and not what I was wanting to see. You know, the eyes the eyes see what they want and the ears hear what they want. Uh so Astrolab probably the last I'm gonna say that partnership uh corporation are sending a watch permanently to the moon. So there is a mission coming. Oh shoot, I should have looked. Uh scheduled to land. Wait, the fuck
Everett did you just say? There's they're gonna like just like shoot a watch to the moon and leave it
Andrew there. May I please explain it? There is a moon mission coming up later this year. Never heard of it. To land a Astro Labs Flip Rover, which is the Flex Lunar Innovation Platform, uh, as part of Astro Robotics, Griffin Mission 1. So there's
Everett they're greasing the skids.
Andrew Yes. You're you're gonna make me say it on accident. Uh now my train of thoughts gone. A supernova is going to be included as a part of this payload package and will be a permanent addition in what will be uh scientific instruments and rover instruments heading to the south pole of the moon as uh
Everett which going
Everett to the back door ladies and gentlemen. Uh as
Andrew reconnoitering instruments for
Everett things on the lunar surface,
Andrew which is where uh NASA intends or believes they intend to start landing equipment and apparatus
Everett for a permanent I feel like you're really fucking this up and it's all my fault.
Andrew For a permanent installment on the lunar surface. Uh that concludes my interest in this watch.
Everett Tell me what's the watch? The watch
Andrew is a Bicompax. It's a 41 millimeter case, 14.4 thick. It's a 914L stainless steel, and I'm interested why they chose 914, not 916. We need we really need a metallurgist uh to talk or like maybe a designer to talk about that. Um Bicompax chronograph, it's it's a base SW500 movement um integrated bracelet. It has a 3D black galvanic grid
Everett pattern with perforations.
Andrew I the watch itself is not something I would have ever taken a second look at were it not for being part of a payload as a permanent um installment on the lunar surface um because it's it's kind of a it's just a really really busy texture y dial that doesn't do it for me uh with a black angled how many sides is that? Octacno hexagonal.
Everett I don't know, man. I hate it. I hate it. Yeah,
Andrew like I said, I I I I really don't care for the watch at all. Uh it's just it's a miss for me. And it it kind of it it in my head fits pretty squarely in the um
Unknown Yeah, what is 914L
Everett steel? There's so there's there's 316, there's nine oh four. What is nine one four? We've seen nine one four a couple times, and I'm trying
Andrew to I don't recall right off the top of my head where, but th this fits squarely in the the Braymont uh tween years that we're seeing from Braymont where they're really still trying to figure out what their design language and uh philosophy are and and this is I don't know this is maybe Braymott in their emo phase uh they're listening to Green Day on repeat. Um yeah
Everett I don't I don't I don't get the watch.
Andrew Um and I think that's kind of that's kind of like Braymon isn't watches for me. I know that. Um I think Braymont knows that. I
Everett don't think Braymont knows what the fuck they're doing right now.
Andrew They're in their emo phase. Uh, but I think it's really cool that they have partnered with Astrolab uh to make a moon capable watch, uh, which is does really strongly align with the Braymont heritage of making instruments for the hardest conditions imaginable. Uh I like that. I think the design is a miss for me, but the idea of we're gonna design something that's gonna go do something that it really should be impossible, and we're gonna go do it. I think that's really cool. I think this partnership is really cool. And uh I'm excited to see more I'm excited to see more watches intended for space travel.
Everett You know, I think of Michael Happy we
Andrew talked to him what five years ago.
Everett It's been a while, yeah. It's been a minute. Maybe
Andrew even longer than that, talking about being in the works for a a Mars watch. Like the the watch that he wanted to design to be intended for a trip to and stay on Mars. I love that kind of ambition. I think it's really neat. I think it's neat to see this weird little world of watches because uh objectively a G Shock is just it sh it is the moon watch, right? It's the best tool for the job. Uh but there's still watch companies efforting doing cool shit.
Everett Yeah, I thought it was interesting that we didn't
Everett get any sort of G Shock or
Everett really any sort of G Shock. I mean, were there any G Shocks on Artemis? I don't I don't think so. What we saw
Everett is is through
Everett sort of the odd' ands and
Everett the late part of the nineties that really Cassio was the soup de jour for real astronauts for working astronauts and
Everett um and so with
Everett Artemis, it feels like we've gone back to a sort of like uh
Andrew the 60s. Maybe not the sixties.
Everett That's not what I'm trying to say here. We've gone, we this has become something a little different than it was, right? Rather than being pragmatic, and this it feels to me like this last generation, this this last trip,
Everett has really emphasized the
Everett sexy marketing aspects of the journey, which I don't
Everett know if I'm totally pumped
Everett about that. You know, it it
Andrew would be nice. I love that Omega X33s are out there. I it would be really nice
Everett for me to see these astronauts like
Andrew saying, I wear this because this is the
Everett best tool. And of course, we
Everett had Reed, uh Weisman.
Everett Reed Weissman saying, oh well, I loved the Brightling's 24 hour dial. With that
Everett said, you know, is that the best tool? Probably not, right? The a Brightling Nava timer is hard to read.
Andrew Yeah, okay. So but it looks so good.
Everett Um, I want to talk about Monta. Monta released this last fall, the newest version of the Triumph. And you know what, Andrew? I will say my initial thoughts on the new Triumph were.
Unknown I think I feel a little bit of reticence
Everett about the new Triumph because I love the old version of the Triumph so much. I it is not, it is not an exaggeration, even slightly an exaggeration, to say it is for me a platonic ideal of watches, right? The size, the design is I don't want to say perfect because no such thing exists, but it's really fucking close.. Yeah And so when they released the new Triumph, it felt to me like like Mike and Justin kind of were getting away a little bit from the things I love about the Triumph, right? The size, that sub-10 millimeter case height, and that 38.5mm case just sings. Um, and it felt to me like the new Triumph with almost an additional millimeter of case thickness and a slightly wider 40, you
Everett know, we of course our show was called 40 and 20 because
Everett at the time we created this, we really felt like 40 millimeters and 20 millimeter lug opening is the
Everett platonic ideal for watches. It's Goldilocks.
Everett At some point in my watch journey, I decided for me, a slightly smaller case is perfect. And the Monta Triumph, Andrew, I'll just say is part of that, right? It is part of what brought me down from that 40 millimeter.
Andrew Well, and bear in mind too, in in 2018, when we started this,
Everett watches were big. Watches were 42
Andrew to 45 millimeters. Like that's right. Like there weren't 38, 36 non-vintage offerings out there. That's
Everett right. So what when Monta released this new version of the Triumph, which was uh almost a full millimeter thicker, slightly bigger. And and then and then they did the other thing they did, and this is real this is related to the slightly thicker, they increased the water resistance from 150 meters to 200. Hey look, Justin, we've talked about that. That's still just 11 points. Yeah. You don't get more points for that. Okay. We talked about it.
Andrew If you if you increase it from 100 to 110, now we're now we're talking.
Everett So with that in mind, I think I was just a touch I don't I don't want to say disappointed by it but I thought oh man you know you're kind of getting a little bit away from what I really want to watch.
Andrew You're fucking with the thing that I love. It that's
Everett true. With that said it's grown on me a little bit. I still I'm not upgrading. I still
Andrew prefer my original, my OG
Everett triumph, uh, because I know the dimensions are perfect. With that said, the new Triumph I that watch I think is really sexy and I think they are following market trends, which is towards a slightly bigger watch. And there's nothing wrong with forty. And I'll tell you, that watch is sexy A.
Andrew Even being a little thicker, even being a little bit wider, that is still a very, very felt sport watch.
Everett So if you've been paying attention to Monta over the last few years, you will have you will have noted that the Noble is another watch that is sold by Monta. And then and if you're really paying attention, you'll know that the noble is essentially a triumph with a slightly dressier dial, with a much dressier dial, simpler, more refined. A noble is a triumph. So it will not at all surprise you to hear that this week Monta released the noble in a slightly bigger size. 40 millimeters, 10-5 thick, 200 meters of water resistance. Um, that they released the noble in the new triumph case. I I don't think it's I don't think it's objectionable for me to say that. Uh which makes sense. They did something that I'm happy about though, Andrew. In releasing this new 40 millimeter Noble, they have announced that they are not getting rid of the 38.5mm Noble. It is they're still making it and they're selling them side by side. So essentially that's exactly
Andrew the right choice, right? My it is my perfect. My initial concern when I saw this release, I was like, oh, they the noble was good because it was 38 and a half. It was a refined triumph. It was for people who wanted just a slightly more dress sport than sport watch. Because the triumph is exceptionally sporty. Yes. And not even a little bit dressy. The noble bridged that gap to take you to just a dress sport watch. Yes. Uh and at 38 and a half, the size was really good. I'd I'm interested to see how if if this is gonna be Monta's kind of expansion, if they're gonna start doing size iterations across their entire line. Uh well, I
Everett I will tell you, there's someone who I'm close to, who
Everett I talk to frequently, who would know about these kinds of things, who have suggested to me that the Triumph will almost certainly be available in the future in a 36 and a half, I think was the was the cited dimension. Um
Andrew so you know in 42.
Everett I think you're right. I think that that Monta's gonna have a a little bit more size variety. Um look, here's the deal. We can we can talk about this stuff. We can criticize decisions. We can say, you know, I wish they did this or I liked it when they did that. I wish they would do this. Um, but the the law, the end of the day, I believe this firmly. Monta is doing more. So, so by the way, I'm gonna stop that thought. I'm gonna interrupt that thought. This is coming in. I think it's I think 1585 is the
Andrew 1585 for the first hundred, and then it's going to the normal Monta price of eighteen eighteen fifty. Yeah. Eighteen ninety five. Eighteen ninety
Everett five. So um at at sub two thousand dollars, this yeah. Monta crushes it. There is nobody in the business making a watch as good as Monta under 2,000 bucks. The finishing, the fit and finishing on these watches is absolutely superlative and it and I don't I don't I don't say that lightly. I mean we've touched Andrew you and I have touched a lot of watches um well
Andrew and and we both have put our money where our mouth is on that monta dollar ta dollar sign. That's true. No friends and family discounts here. Like we pay retail. Pay full retail. That's you know, we both have done it.
Everett Yeah. That that's right. And it's one of the few you Formex is a watch that I paid for. I didn't pay quite retail. Uh paid We don't actually know how much I paid for that watch.
Andrew Nobody does. It's an envelope of uncounted cash. But
Everett I did buy a Formex. And I feel the same way about Formex. You know, m
Everett Formex is obviously doing something slightly different than Monta.
Everett Um, but you know, notice I feel like is a in a slightly different category, but money where your mouth is, right? I I bought that watch. So you know there
Everett are a few brands that I'm like, they're they're
Everett crushing it and they do what they do and they do it really, really well. But if you think about like no no slight to any other company, but like for instance, Jack Mason and Monta coming in pretty close price-wise, if you ask me to pick one based on fit and finish. It's not close, you guys. And I love Jack Mason. I love what Jack Mason is putting out.
Andrew Yeah, the the the resurrected not resurrected, the the second coming Jack Mason. Yeah, I guess it is resurrected. Uh but the second coming, like Jack Mason V2
Everett crushing it. Nailing it, just knocking
Andrew it out of the park. But side by side
Everett with a monta, the fit and fin, it's just not close.
Andrew Yeah, there's it's not close. I I mean we we've that's that's
Everett not fair to Jack Mason. It's close, but Monta wins handily.
Andrew Yeah, there's not the uh there isn't another brand in the affordable space that you're not gonna get to the same level of fit and finish until you hit about that five thousand dollar mark.
Everett Yeah, maybe maybe thirty five hundred. Uh but with that said, I will say Jack Mason's doing making more interesting watches today.
Andrew Yeah. The watches Jack Mason's releasing
Everett today more interesting than anything Monta's released in five years.
Andrew Well, because Monta really hasn't had a release since the Noble.
Everett Well, they have, but I think that they're being they're playing very conservative, which is kind of their game. Right?
Andrew It's it's conservative. They've iterated on the Ocean King and the what's the other one? This it's SkyQuest?
Everett SkyQuest. Yep. They've iterated on both of those.
Andrew They've iterated on the Triumph. But we don't have a new skew from Monta since the Noble. Or not like a new a truly new catalog. Yeah. A new catalog item.
Everett Yeah. Um but Monta
Andrew puts a bucket load of money into their manufacturing process.
Everett Yeah, but I mean if you l I think if you look at the Ocean
Everett King, like that's a new i i it's a new model, right? It it's not just it's an iterative role.
Andrew Tip to tail a new model, but it's still on the Ocean King line.
Everett Now I will say I would I do want to say one more thing
Everett about this about this release because
Everett if you if you're familiar with the
Everett noble, there's something Monte with this Monte's done
Everett more than just make a bigger size of this watch. There is a dimensional, like sort of uh it's still got the 20
Everett millimeter lug opening, and I think it's the same bracelet. And
Everett so what they've done, and this is also true with
Everett the Triumph, the the flanks are sort of beefed up
Everett a little bit and the lugs are beefed up. It
Everett actually has a different feel to it.
Everett It is a sportier. It is a sportier watch for sure. And I like that. I think it looks really, really good. The the
Andrew It's got better. It's got more like shoulder in the lugs. Well, and it
Everett has Crown guards too. That's that's another ad.
Andrew But the the the shoulder of the lug. Yeah like he like he's been hitting the gym.
Everett That's right. A a little bit a little bit
Everett I mean they've done it, they've they've followed in the footsteps of
Everett Rolex a little bit in that regard. Which I don't think
Andrew I I'd like to see them drop a chronograph.
Everett It'd be cool. I think they could pull it off. I think
Andrew they would do a What's that new chronograph caliber.
Everett Yeah, I mean they could do a really baller. Yeah.
Andrew Uh yeah, that peacock. Chronograph. Yeah.
Everett Uh what's next, Andrew? Oh, uh I don't
Andrew know. I haven't. Although they're all Swiss, so I
Everett don't think that's gonna happen. Speece.
Andrew Um Man,
Everett we haven't talked about anything yet in Fort Minutes.
Everett We've had a lot to say about what we talked about.
Andrew I I I know you hate how I say this um brand name, so I'm gonna go with a couple variations right off the front. Bulgari, Bulgari, and Bulgari.
Everett I think those all work for Okay. So
Andrew uh Octof. Although I think it's
Everett pronounced Bulgari. I think it's
Andrew bulgari. Bulgari. Because it's a V in it. Uh and I know what sound a V makes. It's not ooh. Or uh
Everett just move it a little. Uh
Andrew Bulgari Octofinissimo Minute Repeater 37mm. And here's why I wanna talk about it. Just f just briefly, because I I don't I don't this is this is a little bit this is just it's too much for me. The thickness on this thing. Why can't I find it? It it's oh here it is.
Everett Yeah. Super thin. 3.12
Andrew millimeters in a minute repeater.
Everett Isn't that the movement thickness? That's the movement
Andrew thickness. Yeahah., ye So the the
Everett I think the watch dimension is like eight.
Andrew Where is it? Uh I had it.
Everett This is on my list too, Andrew. If you want me to talk about this.
Andrew Just because it
Everett feels like maybe you're not ready. I'm never
Andrew ready. I've never once been ready. But here's here's what I want to talk about. Because I I love the octofamissimo. Uh I think it is one of the coolest expressions of design and technology in that we have in the watch world. And I seeing this come in as a minute repeater, sub 10 millimeters, we'll say, with uh 30 meters of water resistance. I now find it inexcusable for watches to be greater than 10 millimeters.
Everett Yeah, that's that that concludes my
Andrew rant. This is a this is a minute repeater with fairness, only 30 meters of water resistance. But it's a minute repeater with a sub-four millimeter movement. So um like maybe let's get our act together and start thinning movements and cases. Uh oh, this is also $200,000. Um, and there's only 20 of them.
Everett Yeah. Yeah. So I I don't
Everett have the minute repeater on my list, but what I do have is the new Octofinissimo released in 37. So the first time I saw an octofenesimo was on Rick of
Everett Solabs uh on his wrist.
Everett He had an octofenissimo, and I was like, whoa, I've never seen one of those.
Everett That's wild. And he's like, Yeah,
Everett it's a really fucking cool watch.
Everett Um, and let me wear it, let me play with it. You, you know, my reaction to it was, holy
Everett cow, this thing's super thin.
Everett And oh gosh, this is way bigger than I thought it was gonna be. It is a big sort of cuff of a watch.
Andrew Because it's it's just a credit card.
Everett That's right. Yeah. It's got, it's got a cuff feeling to it, which I wasn't
Everett wild about. And I thought, you know, this watch
Everett is just too it's just too big. So Bulgari
Everett has shrunken.
Everett Shrunk? Shrunk. Shrunked. Shrunked.
Andrew Shrunked. Yeah, that's the one. The octofenissimo
Everett down to 37 millimeter, which is
Everett I think a little over two millimeters. Uh
Everett the standard is forty, but it's not forty. I think it's like
Andrew thirty-nine size. And
Everett so so like almost three millimeters of reduction in size
Everett on paper. Um which for
Andrew a square is meaningful. It's
Everett a big square watch. That's right. And so I I
Everett think that that's gonna make this watch. Now the
Everett lug to lug on this is really long. These are like
Andrew forty two lug to lug, even for the thirty-seven
Everett interestingly enough, the 37s are slightly thicker
Everett because that that movement that Bogari had it has in the 40
Everett millimeter is like, I think
Everett the movement is like 37 millimeters wide. It's
Andrew it's pancaked, yeah. They gotta and
Everett so when they shrunk that down to fit in this case, you know, taking off three millimeters on the X and Y dimensions, they had to add a little bit to the Z, so slightly thicker and
Everett not much, right? Like 0.2 millimeters. So I think that
Everett this watch comes in just a touch thicker
Everett than the old octofenismos. Probably in practice, you're not going to feel the thickness. What you are going to feel is that that
Everett overall expanse being shrunk down to a more manageable size. I'm guessing here, of course. I haven't touched these. Um, I
Everett just think they take a very interesting watch
Everett and make it a potentially wearable watch.
Everett Right? Uh I think this is great. No, no, this is not an inexpensive watch. 16,600 for a base model in steel. And then if
Everett you want precious metal, you're obviously looking at much
Everett more than that, 50,000 roughly. Uh with that said, secondary market, let's say you get into these at about ten. It's a suit like this is one of those watches that you could wear and people are gonna be like, I don't know anything about watches. And that's cool. And that's interesting, right?
Everett This is a really cool watch.
Everett And it's not just it's not just cool for watch people. This is cool. It's a sexy watch. It's different
Everett than anything you're gonna see. It's
Everett gonna if what you want to do is grab
Everett people's attention, it's gonna do that. This
Everett is a really neat watch, and I I think this is a much, much needed update to a watch that was, I think, practically speaking, unwearable. I don't think that this is a watch that not unwearable is not fair, but it's not a watch that I would want to wear very often. It
Andrew wasn't it it's certainly not my jam either,
Everett but for the mind
Andrew blowing technology that's going into
Everett it. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, of course, this isn't, you know, Bulgari's done so got some really, you know
Everett crazy shit. They've got paper thin turbulence. And this isn't
Everett that. This is more sort of like their you know, sort of shit
Andrew stuff. Yeah, and it's still like some of the coolest stuff in the watch world.
Everett Yeah. Yeah. I think it's a really great update. Um,
Everett does that count as my watch or should I pick something else?
Andrew I think you're up now because I wanted to talk about the minute repeater.
Everett Tutor updated the Black Bay 58 quietly, and when I say quietly, I mean
Andrew added blue. No, so the black bay
Everett okay, so the black bay 54 was released in blue, and it is just a black bay 54, but last year, Omega released a Black Bay 58 in
Everett Maroon, Burgundy. I can't remember what they
Everett called it. And in that 58, they took some elements from the 54 and and released it. I think a lot of people were like, oh, this is really cool.
Everett This feels more like
Everett a classic vintage Omega, or not Omega, Tudor. And and so what Tudor has now done is kind of repeated those things to fully refresh the Black Bay 58. Now you would be forgiven in looking at these watches and wondering what's new. I've got a list, a small list of things. So they've taken the um they've taken the lollipop seconds hand from the 54, which I love. They've taken the sort of hipped minute hand, which I don't care about. Uh they have made the finishing or the the space between the coin edge, the fluting on the bezel and the crown, both a little wider. Probably gonna give you a little bit more grip, make it a more functional watch, but also gives it a little bit more, I think, vintage appeal. Um and they've taken off just a touch of thickness from 119 down to 117, uh, which I don't think you're gonna notice. Uh but maybe, maybe.
Andrew I I I think still 200
Everett meters. It it's still a Tudor
Everett Black Bay, but they've just they've just
Andrew They've just refined it a little bit. A little
Unknown bit. Small
Andrew degree that uh you'd be forgiven for not noticing.
Everett Yeah, I don't mind it at all. I I like what they've
Everett done here. Um now I've been negative about the Black Bay 58. I think this is a
Everett good release. Uh I'm still I haven't been negative, but I'm not been super high on the 58. And I'm still not.
Andrew Yeah. Well, but this is a good release. It didn't ever really like get you.
Everett It still hasn't. Uh yeah, it
Andrew didn't. And it hasn't. We've not. We
Everett do now, of course, as I mentioned earlier, uh, have master chronometer certification here because tutors leaning into it. With that, we
Everett do have a price increase. Pricing for the tutor black bay fifty-eight is five grand
Everett on rubber, 5225
Everett on an oyster, and 5350
Everett on the Jubilee, which is about
Everett a $600 increase across the board
Everett for MSRP Tutor Black Bay 58.
Andrew Uh which makes sense, right? Yeah. I and I've always I've always really liked the the 58. Um but in this zone I think there's other more interesting things.
Everett Me too. Yeah. And
Andrew it's not a short list or not a particularly short list of more interesting things at that five thousand dollar ish mark that do the same things. And uh I know there's a lot of I mean shoot I I know people who own a BB58 and I would never judge that that choice because I think it's a fantastic watch. And
Everett you're not gonna do better
Andrew for this price point. You just might find something more interesting.
Everett Yep. Yeah, I mean it
Everett it's apples and oranges, but like for my
Everett money, give me a Zen T50, right?
Andrew Or even a C Master Pro or
Unknown Yeah. I I think that's that's where I go. Did
Andrew you say a C Master Pro? Yeah. Get
Everett the fuck out of here.
Andrew What should I have said? I don't know. A
Everett seamaster. Who's buying a seamaster?
Everett You mean like a coaxial? Like
Andrew fuck yeah. Gross. That's
Everett gross. And even at this price point, I
Andrew mean a pelagose isn't much. I mean a a Pelagos, I think, is a thousand dollars less.
Everett Yeah. And and obviously again, like with the T fifty
Everett apples and oranges, right? The the Black Pay
Everett 58 is doing that dress
Everett diver thing
Everett that I think they they really are
Everett doing that sub thing better
Everett that well but
Everett a T50 would also be dope.
Everett Yeah yeah um Andrew anything else you want to talk about today?
Andrew Are we are we long in the tube? We're not.
Everett We could keep going for a while. Let's go. Let's show it going. It is
Andrew we we do run this thing. That's true. Uh because we haven't gotten to much. Um I I sent you a bunch of stuff that like I liked, and now as I'm looking at it for
Everett like I don't care about that. Like I've lost
Andrew interest. Uh I didn't lose interest in this: the Oris Star Edition.
Everett Yeah. Uh this
Andrew is maybe gonna turn me to Aurus. Uh so what we have here is a watch that arguably is Oris, right? And it's being re-released. Uh so this new era, they're calling it, of Oris, began in 1966. Uh and and it was launched by the Oris Star. Uh, the first lever escapement. And now here it is. First lever escapement from Oris. And now here it is. Back. And this is a beautiful. Um um modernization of that watch.
Everett I think. Uh right?
Everett I think so, yeah. Yeah, I mean I mean this
Andrew it is sized perfectly. It's a 35mm case, 41 and a half lug to lug, 11-1 thick, 50 meters of water resistance, and it's got this lovely, like kind of chamfered tonneau case.
Everett Yes, C case. It's like a like with a great ribbon chamfer.
Andrew Yeah, it this thing is absolutely lovely. And this is it's not master chronometer, nor is it a chrometer. Uh 1800 Swiss francs. This is unlike anything I've seen from Oris.
Everett Yeah. In in modern memory,
Andrew right? Oris has, you know, their lineup of like ten watches that you recognize. Ish ten.
Everett Yeah, maybe less. Doesn't
Andrew matter. But but watches you recognize as Horus. And this holy is not. And I love it. I
Everett love it. It's interesting. Yeah, it's interesting. So so
Everett back to the the the lever action
Everett thing for just a second, Andrew. I I I we're you
Everett and I were both too young to have any
Everett like real world co context
Everett for this, but uh apparently there was a
Everett rule in Switzerland, there was a law in Switzerland that prevented companies from using tech for the first basically, like tech might exist, other companies might be using it, but usewis company can't.
Andrew I'm sure that
Everett this was sort of part of Switzerland's you know regime hand holding um thing that they had. And the the fellow who invested the most time and resources to fight this was an Oris
Everett attorney. And uh eventually
Everett in 1966 got that law overturn and this would the or the aura
Everett star I was gonna say the Orient Star the Aura Star
Everett was the watch that they released to celebrate now we can use the lever escapement because the lever escapement is I don't know what percentage it is, but I think a lever escapement is in the vast. I mean it's gotta be
Andrew it's uh objectively all. Objectively
Everett it is subject, yeah, yeah. We all
Andrew watches all watches use a lever escapement,
Everett right? So we have in the sixties all these Swiss companies that
Everett are stuck using old From
Andrew the 30s through. So this law was introduced in in 1934. So until 196 sixty six right that's a
Everett crippling rule. All of these companies
Andrew who hadn't yet developed and and so the law was that it brands weren't allowed to introduce new technology. They had to work with what they to their brand. So they they had to use the technology that they were already working with. There was no RD. So it was the brands that were ahead stayed ahead. And it was a a limiter for the the research and development and advancement of watchmaking in Switzerland until this law was overturned.
Everett Meanwhile by 1960 basically everyone besides these limited companies, is using a lever escape.
Andrew Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No,
Everett it is a cool watch. I I think that the size is right for the watch. It is. I also think that it would be smaller than I would want to wear at 35mm. It's a little watch.
Andrew Yeah, but I think of like 36 millimeter watches are just they feel so
Everett good. They can feel good, yeah.
Andrew And I think with this with this tonneau e case. I think that's gonna be a really good feeling watch.
Everett Yeah. And I love that it's
Andrew from a brand that you know, like I've I've talked about a lot of Aurus watches. I don't really have anything against any Aurus watches uh they just have never really scratched any itches for me. Yeah. This one this one gets the one right behind the ear.
Everett I I think it is I think it's lovely. Um I think it's lovely.
Everett So JLC? Oh,
Andrew yeah. JLC, uh oftentimes
Everett I think JLC
Everett gets short shrifted uh in the world of like badass production watches, right? There's sort of like they're kind of on an island, right? They're they
Andrew live in a weird space. They're in between Longa
Everett and uh you know, basically basically right there with the big boys, but just a little less. And so anyway,
Andrew just a little on the outside. I've
Everett been I've been sort of quietly, I would say, like admiring a few JLC watches from afar, but
Unknown I feel like by and large there's
Everett always something about JLC that is just like I'm maybe not gonna get there with you. Uh Jagger.
Everett That's what I call him. Uh we're from Jaeger
Andrew Lakot. Yeah, I call him Jagger though. Jagger.
Everett Um well Jaeger Lakra
Andrew released three
Everett versions of its master control chronometer with integrated
Andrew chronometry bracelet sport
Everett watches. And I am here for it. So what they've done is they've released uh time date, they've released a power
Everett reserve, and then of course they've
Everett released a lovely
Everett uh uh excuse me. Why am I just
Andrew everything it's uh blanking on words? I had it too. I was gonna make fun of you by saying it's a perpetual calendar. Yeah.
Everett Jeez Louise. Uh and listen,
Everett these are hot fiber. I in
Everett my mind, in my mind,
Everett these are basically perfect releases. Uh the finishing on these, the bracelet, the bracelet to end link or or to to mid-case connection, the way the case curves down into the lugs, the dials, the depth of the dial, the bezels, the crowns. I there is not the
Andrew depth of the case is also really fantastic. The the so much of the watch is below the the center line of the mid-case. It's just it's gonna be so perfectly balanced, so thin. The curvature of that of those lugs is just gonna like make this thing m become a part of you.
Everett Yes. Yeah. Look. It I'm
Everett not uh it doesn't happen very often that I
Everett see a watch above you know three
Everett or four thousand dollars that I'm like,
Everett take my money. But this is one of those. So
Everett again, three versions, perpetual calendar, uh, power
Everett reserve, and then time and date only. And I like all of them. I I like all of these. So we've got cost certifications across the board, uh,
Everett but also the Yeager
Everett Culture's own independent
Everett uh high precision guarantee. High precision guarantee, that's right. HPG. Uh we've got the
Andrew middle finger to the Cosk plus.
Everett That's right. That's right. Uh we've got like
Everett crazy good, so like
Everett for the HPG testing
Everett standards, we've got atmospheric
Everett conditioning up to a thousand, so from sea level up to a thousand four meters. Uh, we've got multi-directional shocks from 25G to 50 G. We've got multi-position testing and then temperature testing down to 18
Everett degrees. So fluctuations
Everett from eighteen Celsius to thirty-five Celsius. Uh and dimensionally we've got I think nine point
Everett two and eight point four millimeter
Everett each on a thirty-nine millimeter or thirty-eight
Everett millimeter case, thirty-nine
Everett for the perpetual calendar and the power reserve and thirty-eight for the date only. These all come in steel or rose gold.
Andrew Pink gold. I'm not a fan of the pink gold.
Everett I'm I'm a fan. Three three row integrated bracelets. Jeez Louise.
Andrew I don't I I I can go without the power reserve indicator, but the perpetual calendar with the moon phase is just stunning.
Everett And and they're affordable too. I I mean when I say affordable, I I
Everett mean like I think
Everett fifteen grand for like fourteen grand for the steel date only version which tons of money but you were talking about one of the coolest watches released this year you could pick it up for you know just happier salary for most of you most of us
Andrew yeah you know just take a second mortgage plenty of people are doing it these I love this
Everett watch I love all three versions of this.
Everett Integrated sports JLC, give it to me. Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
Andrew Yeah, I'm I'm for it. The the three hander is uh I Yeah. And don't
Everett don't I mean don't uh don't knock
Everett the perpetual calendar because holy Oh
Everett the perpetual calendars uh it's
Andrew it's something else. Holy
Everett shit. And it and it sub
Andrew ten for all of those complications uh is just something else. The chamfer on the top of the connecting integrated link just to create some clearance.
Everett 40,000 is deal for the perpetual calendar, by the way. 40,000 euro.
Everett Eh. Just sell your car.
Andrew Package it. You start walking. If
Everett I sold my car, they'd be like, Hey, you owe us money.
Andrew Yeah, but then you'd have some some liquid to then get this watch.
Everett I don't I I don't think so. I they'd
Everett be like, hey, y your car is not worth as much as you own it. Andrew, any any other watches you want to talk about?
Andrew Don't sell it to a bank. Sell it to a person and insist on cash. Uh no, I think I can I think I can forego on the the rest of the list.
Everett The only other thing I want to talk about is Universal Genev released
Everett its watches and
Everett they are as I think I'm not gonna sh I'm not gonna say as we feared, I'll just say as
Everett I feared. They're very cool
Everett and way too expensive, and that makes me sad.
Andrew Yeah, the the pull router at what's it, 14 grand?
Everett Yeah. Starting at 14 grand. Uh
Andrew not not exactly what I was. It's what it's what I should we should have expected. I know what we hoped.
Everett I know we just I know we just said, oh, the JLC is affordable at 14 grand. But but that like Universal Genève is not JLC and I wanted to I wanted it to be affordable. I wanted them to, but that's they're they're gonna be more like JLC than Universal Genève. That's it. That's that's what we know. Uh which is fine. It's fine. It's not bad. I just makes me a little sad. I was I was really looking forward to having another player in that, you know, five to fifteen range. That five to you know ten range, let's say, and that's not what's gonna be that's not what's gonna
Andrew happen. No. Sad,
Everett so sad. Andrew, do you have another thing that you'd like to talk about?
Andrew Do you have another thing? Other things go. Uh so my kids got me this game for my birthday, because I had a birthday a couple weeks ago. So I
Everett played this game. Throw the burrito. I played this game.
Andrew This is so for those of you unfamiliar, uh Throw the Burrito is a very silly game made by Exploding Kittens who does a lot of um really fast-paced, really easy to learn, uh just silly fun games.
Everett Yeah, they've got like a a physical element in addition to a like a game strategy element.
Andrew Yes, but they're really fast-paced. And what I really like most about them is they don't really require literacy.
Everett True. Uh like the the
Andrew the gameplay isn't isn't slow, you know, read the card. It's a like so for this game, it's a fast-paced uh matching, like matching card game uh where you're creating pairs uh or or sets of cards uh and then there's some cards that create action items. Uh the action item in this game is you grab a little foam burrito in the middle of the table.
Everett Yeah, it's like squishy like that squishy foam.
Andrew Yeah, it's it's not exactly foam. It's it's like like the new era nerf foam kind of stuff. Uh it's not like jelly so it doesn't get sticky and gross on the floor, but it's not uh not exactly foam. And then you throw the burrito at
Everett Squishy foam. Yeah. But then you
Andrew throw that burrito at other players in in the game. And it is so much fun. Because it's really fast. It the there the rules are you read them once, you're like, oh, I get it. Yeah. And everyone gets it. My six-year-old got it. I'm like, hey, this is how you play.
Everett On it. Okay, I accept. And then it and
Andrew he could play and participate. He wasn't super good at understanding that if you get the card to throw the burrito, you're actually not the one who gets to throw the burrito. Cause he just wanted to throw the burrito. But we just we overlooked that excitement of it. Uh it's fast, it's chaotic, it is a five minute play. If if you like you have five minutes to sit down and play a game and that's what you want to do with five minutes. Like if I have five minutes to do something, I don't have enough time to do it. But if you it you can really sit down and play through this game in five to seven minutes. Everyone has fun.
Everett And it's the type of game that will elicit joy in a way that
Andrew Yes. Like quick happiness
Everett and joy. Yeah. Yes. Uh
Andrew so it's 20 bucks, like maybe less if it's on sale, but uh in the way of like games to add to your collection that are are really low impact. There's it's a deck of cards, a couple little odds and ends, and two foam burritos. Uh that highly, highly recommend. Because everyone's gonna have fun doing it. It's a game that's too fast. to not enjoy
Everett Yeah, if you're not having fun, it's because you su don't like fun. Suck a
Everett little bit. Yeah, because you don't like fun. You
Everett don't like fun. Um,
Everett it's uh I I love that kind of thing.
Everett Uh I love that kind of thing when you get a game, you're like, this wasn't expensive, it's not difficult, didn't take a long time, and I just had s I I just enjoyed the
Everett last hour of my life doing
Everett this thing. Yes. Um,
Everett Andrew, I've got another thing. Do me.
Everett Now, some of you, I'm
Everett just gonna say some of you at home are going to be like, Everett, yes, what what took you so long?
Everett So I'll just say before I tell you what my
Everett other thing is, I've known about this
Everett thing for some time, but I have not had good luck locating it. Andrew, I'm gonna hand you I'm
Everett gonna hand you the tool and I'm gonna hand you the case because you need to feel all of this so
Everett i have been on a bit of a harbor freight kick recently and you're gonna get some harbor freight you're gonna get some
Everett harbor freight entries for me and other things coming up in the next I don't know six months let's
Everett say I don't know when I'm gonna talk about everything
Everett but what I have is the quote unquote
Everett Harbor Freight Icon meme tool uh which is what it's come to be known at. But this is the 35-piece quarter-inch mini ratchet kit from the icon 35-piece mini ratchet kit from
Everett Harbor Freight. This, I think about four years ago hit the
Everett scene and was just instantly, instantly grabbed
Everett onto by like the sort of EDC tool crowd. People were like, this
Everett is legit and cool and awesome and compact. It is from what I'm gonna say is I had when
Everett I first bought my house, Andrew,
Everett in 2007, my first bought
Everett my first house, 2007-ish. I spent a lot of time at Harbor Freight. And I spent time at Harbor Freight not because Harbor Freight had good shit, but because Harbor Freight was
Everett affordable for me. And you when you first
Andrew when you buy a house, you need so many tools. I just needed so much shit. That's right.
Everett And so I bought a lot of really crappy Pittsburgh tools. And over time, I think Harbor Freight has done a really good job of spreading the love between like still very, very affordable kind of shitty stuff that you only gonna need once and and affordable versions of very what I'm gonna say dupes of very high end stuff. So this is in Harbor Freight's icon line, which is I think their line, I'm not sure that I I'm not sure if they own the companies or if they're this obviously a close relationship um but icon is a harbor freight brand that is targeted at mechanics professional mechanics and so this the build quality is really good. I cannot believe how nice everything in this set is. First, it is about the size of a like a big Nokia cell phone when it's closed. Um
Andrew it's or like any current Android phone.
Everett Fits in your pocket, it fits in my briefcase. Uh it is a quarter inch ratchet. How big is that wrench,
Everett Andrew? Five inches. It's a five-inch ratchet.
Andrew No, that's eight inches. That's
Everett no got it.
Everett I'm tracking you. Um,
Everett but because of the way this kit is built, it can be hand me this thing.
Everett Hand me this thing. It can be
Everett you can extend
Everett it to about a 10-inch
Everett to get more leverage. You can also the way the socket receiver is, is it's pass-through. And so the extension, if you line up the extension with this little white dot, you can turn it into a T handle to get leverage. You can just, there's a ton of different ways you can use this. The socket, the
Everett wrench, the actual ratchet, is just incredibly
Everett well built. The feels great.
Andrew The the feedback on it it it feels like it was designed by like the same people that do ergonomic uh industrial design for consumer packaged goods.
Everett It feels like a Japanese tool, is what it
Everett feels like to me. And I say that uh as a you
Everett know, a Gen X millennial cusper who doesn't have bad feelings about Japanese tools.
Everett Um this thing but also as
Andrew like a person who likes fountain pens and shit, and like has a real understanding of of and watches for that matter, has like a real understanding of of micro craftsmanship and this the that thing, every single component, right from the s the glide lock on the case to
Everett glide. I
Everett I hear what you're saying, but it just cracks me up that you said
Andrew that. Uh to the because that's what it is. It's a gliding like self locking mechanism. Uh right to the the action on the ratchet, the manipulative the manipulation of the uh uh what's the word I want to use for that? The tilt?
Everett The tilt on the ratchet head on the ratchet head.
Andrew Like that is everything
Everett feels great. Nothing feels cheap. Everything is just now now you might say, well, Everett, why do you need this thing and what are you gonna do with it? That's a great question. And I don't have good answers for you.
Andrew It's it replaces every half-built partially empty screw replaceable screwdriver set that you have with something that's totally self-contained. It's not just that plastic strip that has screwdriver heads in it that just vanishes. Um because
Everett it's all self-contained. As long as you keep it together. I I love this thing. I I bought
Everett it so I've been looking for one of these
Everett for a while and have struggled to find one because they're always sold out. And I could have ordered this. I could have just ordered one. Yeah,
Andrew but you want to buy it off the shelf. I wanted to
Everett buy one off the shelf and I went into the store today and they had three on the shelf and so I just picked it up. $39.99. I paid full price for it. Um
Everett and I'm like, God damn,
Everett this thing is worth every single penny. If
Everett this said we're a
Everett or wehaw on it, I would and I and I spent 85 bucks, I'd feel good
Everett about that purchase. Um, it is absolutely
Everett phenomenal. Now, I am not a
Everett hard user case, right? My use case is light EDC quarter inch drive use, right? Like I might use this for, you
Everett know, the occasional knife repair or, you know, cleaning or
Everett things that you need a screwdriver for, like Andrew said. Uh with that said, I am so
Everett happy to have this incredibly
Everett cool, really, really rad
Everett thing. Uh I bought it and I was just like, I'm glad I own this.
Andrew The even the texture on the box
Everett feels great. Yeah.Feels great.
Andrew It's just lightly rubberized, but it's not tacky.
Everett Yeah. Yeah,
Andrew it's a good pickup, man. It's phenomenal. I I every time I go into Harbor Freight, these are sold out.
Everett They're always sold out. Now, I will say,
Everett if you if you go to the website, they have I think a 35-piece and an 85-piece. The 85-piece does not have the pass-through on the on the side on the wrench.
Andrew The pass-through is nice though because gives
Everett you that T handle. Because if you if
Andrew you don't I don't know, I I feel like that pass-through T handle and variable length of your ratchet end is what makes a 35 it's what makes the 35 piece so valuable because small tools are kind of hard to find.
Everett Yeah. Uh we all have like
Andrew six inch to like ten inch shaft.
Everett Not me. Screwdrivers. Oh, yeah.
Andrew We like everyone has a bucket load of big tools. But precise tools, like those are never around, it feels like for me.
Everett And there's no precision. There's no precision driver set with this. Um and and it's like got that full size quarter inch drive set. So I it I'm not sure if you could find precision. It does have um it does have torque bits down to T6 and it has smallish hex bits. So this is a
Everett Gosh, I can't read it. Smallish hex bits. Yeah.
Everett Um, but the s the actual screwdriver
Andrew bits are all pretty big. So one point five on the hex bit.
Everett There you go. So so it's not gonna replace your precision screwdriver
Everett set. Um, but that's
Everett not really what it's meant to be. It's just meant to be a
Everett small compact quarter-inch drive driver set. So it
Andrew I don't have any sockets to use with this,
Everett so I think I'm gonna pick up some sockets to have a
Everett round that kind of goes along with this,
Everett but it's pretty cool. This thing is fucking rad. I was like, man. So cool. What a cool purchase.
Andrew Doing away with the I love things too, right? Doing away with the little plastic cases of driver bits, yeah, tips. That that's a game changer. Because those always get lost. Yeah. Right. You leave it in the screwdriver, the screwdriver gets set somewhere, and then the bit falls out, or your kids take it, or you know, God knows what happens. And now you're out of bit. But you have eight of those screwdrivers
Everett Yeah. And now no number
Andrew one Phillips heads. Yeah.
Everett I will say that the so the 85
Everett piece comes with like a regular screwdriver handle that's that's compelling but it doesn't
Everett have the pass through it it you could see like if if you really wanted to you could get both of them and kind of make a perfect but
Everett yeah I just went with this and I'm gonna stick with this. I I
Andrew you'll probably get the eighty five piece. At some point,
Everett maybe. Yeah, it's more money. Next time you go in.
Everett I don't think I need it, but uh I don't need this even. But I'm really glad to have it. Andrew,
Everett anything else you wanna add before we wrap it up for
