Speaker
Andrew Hello, fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to 40 in 20, the Watch Clicker podcast with your host, Andrew, and my good friend Everett. Here, we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Everett.
Everett How are you? Terrific. The Mariners just won. Just won. Just won. It just happened. Just won game one of the ALCS. So I'm terrific.
Andrew For the first time in 20 years? 25 years. Yeah. I mean, so... Since 2001, I think, was the little chyron that I saw. Yeah.
Everett The Mariners, yeah. So that's the last time they won a game in the ALCS. They've never been to the World Series. So, yeah. But this is their first time in the ALCS.
Andrew Yeah. Maybe we're seeing, you know, the Seahawks circa 2013 or 2011 when they made their first visit to the Super Bowl and took it.
Everett Well, they're certainly not the Seahawks. They play totally different sports.
Andrew For Seattle sports and excitement.
Everett This has been a magical season for a lifelong. I really don't care about the Seahawks. I don't know why. I watch the Seahawks and I'm like, yeah, football. But the Mariners have always been my true love.
Andrew We're precise opposites on that.
Everett For me, you know, I've got like duck football. I'm a Blazer fan. And then I got the Mariners, and they've always been my true love. Like more than basketball or football, I love baseball. I love it. So this has been a magical season, and it's going to keep going, that game on Friday. It went 15 innings. And it was like I lived entire lives. Those five hours felt like so.
Andrew And even with the shortened pitch clock and all the things to speed it up, adding an extra six innings is a lot of baseball.
Everett Yeah, and in the regular season, they have the ghost runner, right? So when you go into extra innings, they put that guy out on second. But in the playoffs, there's no ghost runner. It's pure baseball. So it's totally possible a game goes 15 innings, and there we were, 15. So yeah, it's really exciting. I'm having a lot of fun. Just watch that win. So I'm high on that. I'm high on that victory still.
Andrew I watch that too. And I'm also coming down from a very big bubble bursting with the duck loss on Saturday. That was a hard...
Unknown That was a hard game to watch.
Andrew You know, I was there. And you watched it live, and I can't even imagine how much worse it was in person.
Everett It's tough. It's tough. It's a game that I expected to win, and so I think it's hard when you sort of feel like, eh, we got the right of this. Indiana's a good football team, so it was a tough loss. Yeah, it was a tough loss.
Andrew But I kicked it today. You know, I did some upholstery repair today. Didn't know that. I watched like two and a half hours of YouTube and repaired approximately 20 inches of upholstery tearing on my couches. Wow. Over the course of three Indiana Jones movies. Whoa. I feel pretty good about it.
Everett I did a pretty okay job. Which three Indiana Jones movies? The OGs. Okay.
Andrew The three. There's a right answer. The three. And that was it. Indiana Jones movies. Fair enough. Fair enough. And then I watched the Indiana Jones ride to just like, you know. Do you have a favorite?
Everett So I think people are pretty... I think it's one of those series where, in my experience, people are really split between Raiders and Last Crusade.
Andrew See, I... I go Temple of Doom because I love it. I go Temple of Doom and I do. And I see why people go Raiders and I see why people go Last Crusade. I love the short round Indiana Jones relationship during. temple of doom that doesn't exist in any of the other movies all of his other relationships in every other movie are like either like oh it's the indie girl like like the bond girl or oh it's his dad but that relationship was short round is like so wholesome
Everett You know, I do think that that is objectively the worst Indiana Jones movie.
Andrew I think you're probably right, but I love that relationship.
Everett And I'm including Crystal Skull in there.
Andrew No, no, no, you're not. I am. Crystal Skull is awful. I love that relationship.
Everett I think we've got to move on.
Andrew Okay, we can move on, but I love that short-rounded Indiana Jones relationship. And I love Last Crusade. That one's hard to top.
Everett So you're saying you're saying you're Temple of Doom, Last Crusade, Raiders? Because I'm exactly the opposite.
Andrew No.
Everett I'm Raiders, Last Crusade, Temple of Doom.
Andrew I see why you're there.
Everett All right, fair enough.
Andrew And I think you're probably right in your assessment.
Everett I mean, I think Raiders is... It's like you said, there's things to like... They're really different movies, which is nice. You don't get that in series all the time, right? Where you've got really different dynamics, notwithstanding a pretty formulaic setup.
Andrew Yeah, yeah. And I think if you pull that interesting short round in Indiana Jones' relationship out... I think I'm with you in your hierarchy of movies, but I just, I love that relationship so much. And I love that character so much and that actor so much that... He is maybe why I love that movie.
Everett Yeah, no, fair enough. And he's a good character. Yeah, I mean, for me, you know, we can move on here. But I would just say, for me, there's something about Raiders. Like, it's just standalone, one of the greatest movies ever made. It's so good. And I don't feel like I could say the same for the other two. Like, the other two are good in context, but Raiders, standalone.
Andrew And the Sala character with, oh gosh, why can't I think of his name? John Rhys-Davies. People think of him and they're like, oh, it's the tree from Lord of the Rings. No, I go right to Lord of the Rings. Or not to Lord of the Rings, right to Indiana Jones. That's John Rhys-Davies for me. But otherwise, I'm pretty okay. Let's talk about watches, Andrew. We should talk about watches because we've got a pretty big list to go through. And we're going to do a little bit of a split episode today because we are... We're going to New York this week. Yeah, we are. For Wind Up. Wind Up is a pretty renowned... You know, locally, it's still in-house, small thing, watch show that people go to to see watches. And we're going to that. And it's the home show. It's Wind Up 2025. And I'm excited. It's the first time I've been to this venue. Have you been to this venue? Nope. So it's the first time we've been to this venue. It's like three blocks from the Empire State Building and I was doing some Googling today like where to see celebrities in New York City and the number one hit was like be near the Empire State Building when they turn the lights on at night because apparently it's like a nightly event to turn the lights on and celebrities go to turn the lights on.
Unknown What?
Andrew I don't know. I don't live there. I don't know shit about New York. Yeah, we do need to spend some time over the next two days to plan our dinner dinners. Definitely got that one.
Everett I'm sort of a... I mean, sure. We can plan dinners. We do need to hit... I'm a little bit like... You go to these places and you almost can't pick too much ahead of time because then you take yourself out of opportunities.
Andrew We do need... We must hit someplace with at least a Michelin star.
Everett I'm down to make an effort.
Andrew That sounds noncommittal. It's because it was. Kim and I have so much in common. It's because it was. I think that's really important. So what I would like to do for this episode, if it'd be pleasing to you, sir, I kind of want to talk about Wind Up and what I'm excited about for a little bit and then dive in. God, that's a stinker. That was like a slow burn, just like slowly made its way over to me. I'd like to talk about that. I'd like to talk about the things that I'm excited about for windup. And then we can dive into some of the things that have happened over the last week or two. Cause some really good things have happened in the last week or two. So can I, I'm going to start, I'm going to start. Sure. Because of America and stuff. First up, So on Friday, this October the 17th from 4.30 to 5.30, there is a panel with... Hang on, I need to get everyone's names right. Tobias Reichschmidt, Giorgio Galli, and Zach Weiss. Weiss, maybe? I don't know. Zach Weiss talking about the... Atelier, the design craft and how, and modern watchmaking is the name. It's Exploring Timex Atelier, a conversation on design craft and modern watchmaking. It's a panel at Windup. I will definitely be in attendance because I'm excited to hear that perspective because for the last five years, You and I have been talking about how Timex is perfectly positioned to fill a void in this industry. And they've been kind of like sprinkling in offerings. And I'm really interested. And I also know I will be let down. I'm fully aware of this. But I'm excited at the opportunity to hear from the people at the helm about their thought process and their thinking of how Timex is moving in to fill this kind of vacuum that Seiko created when they moved from the SKX, from the SNK, and dropped the Seiko 5 Sports line, and then kind of left a void when they moved upmarket. There's Seiko 5 Sports, and then there's upmarket. And there's a space that Seiko used to... almost exclusively exist in that Timex was perfectly and remains perfectly positioned to capitalize on. And they're doing a little bit of it. And I'm excited to hear from two of the people responsible for that momentum on what they're doing to get there.
Everett Yeah, no, it sounds like a fascinating. I will be let down. I also acknowledge that. I will be let down. Oh, who knows, right? You know, panels discussions are interesting at something like this because a lot of times you're meeting a voiceless face, you know, someone who you've talked about and thought about but perhaps have never heard speak. You know, it's the beauty of what we do here.
Andrew Because we talk about squirrels fucking and drink beer and then people get really comfortable and they like let it go.
Everett Well, and actually not what I was talking about at all, but we have an opportunity for owners to come on and talk. And sometimes these are people who have been in other places, but oftentimes the first time I've ever heard their voice is when we turn on the Zoom call. And so that's equally fun for me to hear as it is to be able to publish for other people. Yeah. You know, the other panel that I'm interested in is the Saturday panel regarding the 10th anniversary of Wind Up. You know, Wind Up being the venue for this. First, it's a huge panel. I think it's like Mike Pearson. I know Andrew Perez is going to be on it. Astrum Banks. We both declined to be invited. Yeah. Yeah, nobody's asking us to do this. But, you know, it's going to be a lot of sort of a lot of back slapping, I'm sure. But, you know, when I think I think there are some critical things you can say about about how the show has changed. But that's not what they're there to do. They're there to celebrate it. And so I'm interested in that as well.
Andrew But yeah, I think I really hope they address the little bit of identity crisis that wind up. faces by like, by being a victim of their own success. Yeah. Maybe. Yeah. And I hope there's some conversation around that because it's, it's a little bit of the elephant in the room. Yeah.
Everett Yeah.
Andrew Well, and maybe it will continue unannounced in the corner. It's like Dumbo in the room. It's not a big elephant. It's just a small elephant. He's hanging out. He's like, Hey guys, I'm here. Yeah. Acknowledge me or don't, but you know, I, I, I am here.
Everett What about watches? Any watches that you're interested in seeing when we're out there? I think for me, there's going to be a lot of brands that I've perhaps never had the opportunity to touch. And watches within those brands. Anything in particular for you, Andrew?
Andrew Can I talk about something not watch-related?
Everett Yes.
Andrew Brook Lottie is going to be there.
Everett Yeah, I've got Brook Lottie on my list too. You know, one of my, probably one of my favorite scotch brands, scotch companies. So both Port Charlotte, which we just spoke about, and then Brook Lottie. Yeah, so it's something I'm very pumped about.
Andrew I don't know. I might not leave their table. They might invite me to leave the venue. Yeah, I'm wondering if they're going to have cool shit there. I don't know.
Everett Let's get weird. Do you think there'll be an opportunity to buy things? I don't know.
Andrew I'm excited. What if they've got some old Port Charlotte expression? Then we might end up getting weird. So one of the things that the last time we went to wind up New York, which was 2022- So three years ago? Yep. Was it 2022? Or was it 2023? I think... We went in 2023. Okay. Because then two weeks later, I went to Vegas. And they were setting up for the first F1 race in Vegas. And that was 2023. So 2023, so two years ago, we went to wind up in New York. And they were kind of like... Field testing this not watch stuff, but watch adjacent. There was plenty of EDC things there. And this is like really leaning into this being a victim of its own success where it's not just a watch show. It's not just small brands. It's not like. things that you'll never, ever otherwise see in person. It's big brands, big scotch brands. It's big stuff, which is really, really cool and a testament to the success of this thing that they've built. And also, like, there's, I think, a little bit of an existential crisis in, like, okay, now you have Brook Lottie. You have some of the biggest brands in the world present. And you're kind of edging out the people that you started this for. I'm not complaining. I just, I think there's a conversation to be had there and a balance to be struck. And I don't know what that conversation even looks like. But I'm really excited for whatever they bring. Because they'll have a table and we can get a little weird. Because we're only a couple blocks from the venue. So I can just bumblefuck back to the room.
Everett Yeah, I mean, I'm probably going to... do my best not to get slaughtered on scotch. But yeah, no, I'm excited.
Andrew I fully intend to make a scene. And I do know that I'm faster than Mike Pearson. And France, for that matter. Both of them. So let's just kind of see how that goes. What are you excited to see?
Everett I know for me, I've got some watches that I'm really excited to see. There's been some watches that have come out in the last year, several months even, that I haven't had an opportunity to put hands on that I think are really interesting. The first one for me, and I think that this is maybe the most obvious, is the Doxa 752.
Andrew Oh, you son of a bitch.
Everett I'm really excited. I mean, I'm on record having been really excited about that watch, just generally speaking, you know, when they released it, even when they released it just as the LE. I was like, this is coming and it's awesome. So I'm excited about that. You know, it's really a size thing, right? You know.
Andrew You're a size queen. Everyone knows that. I'm a size queen.
Everett But the difference between the 300 and the 300T and the 750T, I don't know that there's any way on paper to gain an appreciation for what these watches are, right? And so I think... Yeah, there's not. You really have to touch them. And so as high as I am on that watch, I need to put hands on it. I want to put hands on it because I'm at the place where I'm like, this is a watch that I'm very seriously considering targeting to own. I need to put hands on it. So I'm excited about that. That's my first one, Andrew. I don't know how you want to do this. I've probably got three or four watches.
Andrew I'm going to make sure to... I'm obviously going to bring my doxa there because I'd like to side-by-side them. I don't think I'm going to regret my decision, but I'd like to side-by-side them.
Everett Yeah.
Andrew Anyway, my first watch that I'm excited to see, Arkan is going to be there. I've not seen any Arkan in person. I do think the only watch we're gonna get to see in person is the, not the Instrumentum, because the Instrumentum is gone. It's going to be the, oh gosh, what's the name? The Altirum, which is the twin stick, kind of the... Who knows, though? Ken may have some stuff. Yeah, he may have some stuff, but it's kind of the three o'clock primary crown, the four o'clock internal rotating bezel crown. And Ken's got some really cool shit. He's like... I'm excited to see Arkhan in person, having never seen it in person before. Like there's some regrets for me for not having picked up an instrumentum. Um, cause it's just a cool tool watch. Uh, and it's like sleek and postmodern, but also like not all at the same time. He, he, he's done a really good job with both of his releases, uh, and making his bracelet forward adaptive is, is cool. Um, that's a, that's a brand I'm excited to see.
Everett Next watch for me, and I think I've probably got one or two others, but this is one that really stood out to me. Just over the course of the year, I kept coming back to it and thinking, you know what? That is so cool. The Denison Dual Time watch. You didn't send me any links. Well, I did send you links, but not to these. But the Denison dual-time watch is a watch that I'm pretty excited about. It's sort of a brand that, for me, kind of came out of nowhere. But they were so weird. They're so weird that I think like every time I turn around, I'm just seeing more and more of these. So like TV. Yeah, that's right. So the people at home who follow watches know what I'm talking about. That was a direct dig at Andrew. It was. In case you're not laughing. It did. They're laughing. I can hear them from here. This watch really jumped out at me. And I think it's one of those that I need to see in a person because I need to satisfy myself as to whether... it's stupid or it's awesome, right?
Andrew Because it's one of the two. It will be only one of the two. And I tend toward it's the previous, right?
Everett And, you know, we just, of course, we don't know. Very affordable, really interesting watches.
Andrew That's the cool thing about watch shows like this is, and really what... was founded on is the opportunity for us consumers to see watches in person. Because I have to say, like, Serica, just seeing it in pictures, is a watch brand that it would never cross my mind again. But the moment I put one on my wrist, smitten. Yeah. Absolutely smitten. And in fairer is very similar. Like you see these colors and like, Oh, those are cool. And you see it in person and you're just blown away. Watch underdog is similar. Circula is similar. These watches that are interesting when you see them in pictures. And then we see when in person, you're just like, Oh,
Everett Oh, yeah. Whoa. Yeah. Yeah. No, that's right. You know what the one for me is, Andrew? The is Venezia Nico. Did I say that right? I don't know. I don't speak Italian.
Andrew It's my turn now. So can I talk about the thing that I want to talk about? I thought you kind of did. Astor and Banks is coming to town. He's going to have a table. It's a recent decision. It is a recent decision, but he's on the lineup. And you know what I'm more excited about than seeing his watches? I'm just excited to see Andrew. Yeah, me too. That guy is just like one of the most fantastic people that I've ever met. I'm just really excited to see that guy. So as much as I love his watches, I know the M2, the Sea Ranger M2 is going to be there. I'm really excited to try that on because he's done a really good job with his twin stick diver. I'm just really excited to see Andrew and give him a hug.
Everett Yeah, same. And we will see them. I think there will be almost certainly beers with them.
Andrew Beverages. Maybe not shared, but, you know, enjoyed amongst.
Everett Yeah, you know, sorry, Andrew. The other two watches, brands that I'd like to see, I want to see the Venezia Nico, and I want to see everything. Because these... There's going to be 200 brands there. No, no, I mean everything from... Venezia Nico. Okay. Because their whole lineup I find really curious. They get some homage-y stuff that sort of bugs me, but they just look like, on paper, they just look like really well-built watches. The other one is the Hanhart Preventer. I'm really excited to get hands on a Preventer because I think the Hanhart Preventer is probably one of the most exciting watch releases in the last handful of years. And that's it. It's not exciting. It's a boring watch release. I don't mean exciting.
Andrew I'm not going to link to it. I mean awesome. They know what a hand heart preventer is. They don't need a link. I'm just saying I'm not going to do it because we already have a lot of links. You know what? I think the brand that I'm most excited about being present. Tell me. Meister Singer. Oh, yeah, that's interesting. Because it's a brand that every single release, we talk about it because they're interesting and I like them. And I'm kind of prepared to make some irresponsible decisions this weekend. And a Meister Singer might be among them because this is one of those watches that I'm super confident. that you see pictures of and you're you're like you're interested the design is there everything's good and then it doesn't click until you see it in person yeah and then you see it in person and you're just like yep yep get in my butt like just crawl up in there uh i don't know what brand ambassadors are gonna have present i'm sure i'm faster than anybody who they're bringing um But I'm super excited to see Meister Singer in person. Because that's always been a question. Like, okay, but how's the case finishing? Like, how's it feel on the wrist? Dimensions seem right. But there's got to, like, I'm kind of looking for an out here. And getting to see him in person. This is the brand I'm most excited about seeing at the entire show. Interesting.
Everett Well, I think it's going to be fun. I'm looking forward to it.
Andrew If you're there... I have another couple to talk about. Go ahead. I'm really, really hoping to get to see the Fears and Studio Underdog collaborations. I'm pretty... At this point... You think Richard will have them there? I think one of the other, like one of the brands will have them there. I don't think Fierce is at the show. Is Fierce not? Oh, well, so Richard says on the website, if you go to Studio Underdog, see you soon in NYC. Yeah, Richard's, Studio Underdog will be there. So hopefully in Manhattan will be there. I just like to see it because I love that. I love fears. I love studio underdog and the totally not. Like the unexpected union between those brands. Like this very classically styled, very vintage inspired against this like punk rock idea is really cool. And the Manhattan is this perfect blend of those two things. And I really hope to get to see one in person. One brand I do want to talk about who's notably not in attendance, Brick Watch Company. This guy says he's selling us $10,000 watches for $2,000. They're on sale. Are they $500? How much are they on sale? They're $1,900 still. Oh, my gosh. A couple of editions are sold out, but I'm really surprised he's not going to be a wind-up. Fat Zuckerberg, come on. This is your opportunity. What else? That's it. That's my wind-up excitement. Obviously, I'm really excited to see every brand there. I'm really excited to see people I haven't seen in a couple years. I'm excited to reconnect with people who... you know, we've known for a really long time and who like the, the friendships you make in this community, this, this neck beardy community that we exist in are the kind that I'm really familiar with where you just like suddenly aren't connected anymore. And then you are back together and you pick up right where you left off. There's no buildup time. There's no, I'm, I'm just very excited to be amongst our people again.
Everett Yeah, and if you're there, drop us a message on Instagram, 40 and 20 Instagram, if you want to try to hook up.
Andrew Or just approach us, mostly Everett, but both of us are totally accepting of unsolicited hugs. Hugs, Jesus.
Everett Yeah, just come say hi if you see us. But yeah, if you're there and you want to try to hook up, Instagram is going to be the best way to reach us. And yeah.
Andrew Edward's phone number, if you want to text us while we're there, is 867-5309. He's happy to respond. and we will be the assholes with mobile recording devices and microphones stuffing them in people's faces. So if you don't know what we look like, do feel free to approach us and say hi because we love meeting people and interacting with people who we talk to every week. Yeah, it is fun.
Everett It is a lot of fun. Yeah. And we got press credentials this time, so we'll be able to get interviews ahead of time.
Unknown Presumably name tags.
Andrew I don't think we'll get that, but we will be able to access the show early. I am bringing us name tags. They're on laminated eight and a half by 11. Okay, great. With our faces. No, our butts.
Unknown Cool.
Andrew Our faces are on our face.
Unknown Is there anything new that came out this week you want to talk about?
Andrew Holy fuck. Guys.
Everett I don't know what he's on about.
Andrew Guys.
Everett Y'all.
Andrew The large Cartier Santos came out in titanium. And they came out with a medium and a black dial with a date and a loom dial. And... I don't know if you can see, Everett, but my... Oh, no, I see. My brow has gotten sweaty and my pants have gotten tighter.
Everett Yeah, you know, was it all Aces? Was this release all Aces for you? Because it wasn't for me.
Andrew Those two. What? Hang on. I would like to see the medium in titanium, not just the large. Because the large is too big, right? I tried on the medium and the large, and I think the only way I can make a large work is in two-tone. Like just go big. Just go, yeah. Yeah, I do like the lume on the black dial. The titanium large is money. And I think it is going to, I think going to titanium compensates a little bit for the size and the way it's not going to feel so big because it just weighs less. But the medium doesn't wear small. The medium is about as big as I can comfortably wear.
Everett I think the medium is the right size. I'm wearing the medium right now, just for the record, as we're both looking at it. This is just too big. The large is too big for me. So as pumped as I am about this watch, that was my quibble with the release. Yeah, the medium is just, I think, a perfectly sized watch. It's... It's beautiful.
Andrew It's perfect. I think so, too. It's so perfect, I've never even put it on the strap. I've never taken that bracelet off. Is that right? Never. Even quick release? Yeah, even with a quick release. It's the easiest bracelet I have to remove, and I've never taken it off.
Everett You know, Cartier is a really cool company, and the Santos is a really important watch. But, you know, I think a lot of people look at this thing and think, you know, that is just a dress watch. That is a dress watch. So I love that... I love that Cartier kind of leans into that tension. So, you know, a fully brushed titanium.
Andrew I do really like that it does deal with the heavy polish of the Santos itself. Because it is not a dress watch. Just objectively, it is not.
Everett Well, yeah, but it's a pilot's watch, right?
Andrew But it does have all of the markers of a dress watch. And I'm, I'm wearing, I'm wearing Levi's and a crew neck sweatshirt in the Santos right now. Like this isn't, I don't treat it like a dress watch. I, I don't treat it like a tool watch, right? Like I have other watches to swing a hammer at and I'm a lot of shit. Um, But I think going titanium, going brushed is going to overcome that one little quibble that people have with the Santos. And, you know, maybe it is the right size. It's big, man. When I put it on, I like I didn't I didn't get it. And then I put on the medium and I was like, yep, come home with me, girl. Right. Right. Yeah, because it's such a perfect watch. And it's such an important watch to watches, right? I think that's maybe something that's a little bit lost in the Cartier name is the horological importance of the Santos in the evolution of tool watches. It is modernly viewed as a dress watch. but was created and produced as a pilot's tool watch, as an aviation watch. Yeah. It has no relationship to modern aviation instruments or watches, but for the fact that it is the one, right? It's where they came from.
Everett Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Andrew Just like I have Coptic Egyptian DNA, according to 23andMe. I'm a ginger person. I think the titanium release is really cool, and I expect that they will release one in the medium, because this is going to be hard to get. The black loom is also baller, but the titanium... Large is fucking cool.
Everett Yeah. And you know what? Again, it's a watch I probably should put hands on before I make determinations. I bet we'll see one at watch time. I'm sure Cartier is at watch time. I don't know if they go to watch time or not. I'm not sure I'm going to watch time. I think it's like $45 to get in this year.
Andrew I'll pay it. I don't give a shit.
Everett Yeah. Not faster than those guys. Bangalore released a new watch this week. So a new watch in the Apogee collection, which is Bangalore's space exploration watch. It's their twin stick watch. pilots watch that they made in 21 I believe I believe working with India's Air Force slash space program and and they released it saying that this is India's first space qualified watch I'm not exactly sure what goes into qualifying watch for space but In any event, really cool watch. And we were high on it. It's made from junk from space. And now they've released the Apogee, the visitor model of the Apogee, which is made with a meteorite dial. So Manio Nalusta Meteorite on the dial. And it's really beautiful. It's got sort of a gray or a dark gray DLC finish on the full blasted case. Big wide dial and inner bezel. And this beautiful, dark, subtle Juanio and Lusta meteorite dial. I think this is a really terrific release. The colors, it's like a dark gray, almost monochrome look. And I think the colors on this thing work really well.
Andrew The slightly faux Tina is a little bit of a miss for me, but otherwise, yeah, this could be a... Yeah.
Everett I don't even know if this is Fotina. I just think it's sort of a creamy... It's just sort of a creamy loom. I don't think it's actually... I don't think it's actually got any faux Fotina coloring.
Andrew I haven't read enough of the article. Do you know what the coordinates are at the 6 o'clock?
Everett Oh, I do. Let's find what they say about it. Sorry. That's right. Asking me the questions that I don't know the answers to. I don't know.
Andrew Sorry. It doesn't matter. There's coordinates at 6 o'clock. They go to somewhere. Just Google them. I've got it in the press release here. I didn't see them. All right. Okay. Well, there you go.
Unknown Christopher Ward. Heard of them.
Andrew Dropping some C63s in the stone dial lineup. Because everyone's doing stone right now. I didn't expect stone dials to be the thing this year. And I don't think anyone did, because it's a weird thing to do. But everyone's doing it, so everyone's doing it. So they've got... Four colorways. It's an orange, a purple, a turquoise, and a green. More appropriately, malachite. Char white? Turquoise and tiger's eye. So I actually don't know the difference between malachite and choroid. But the tiger's eye is the orange one and turquoise is the blue one. Malachite's green. The choroid, I think, is the purple. And so malachite's the green one. And they're C63s, right? The C63 is a watch that I own and love. And this is a really cool platform for some stone dials. They're $1,200. And they're C63s, right? Like you can't go wrong. If these are colorways that you like, you absolutely can't go wrong. Each dial variation is limited to 150 pieces. So I think that's a smart move. Just, you know, like a short burst of stones into the world.
Everett Yeah, and these are, you know, it's a 150-meter sport watch. They're almost... It's just a three-hand sport watch, Salida 200-1. These are like $1,175 on a strap or... I think just under $1,400 on a bait or just under $1,500 or just a little bit more money. It's like $1,450 on a contour bracelet.
Andrew Yeah. And I got mine pre-bracelet upgrade. Yeah. I need to get an upgraded bracelet because the bracelet is... really good, and also butts.
Everett I don't know that the new bracelets would fit on yours. You should take it the moment we're there and see if they... That was a plan. That was something I was going to do. Orient released a watch this week that... I saw and I was like, oh, I'm interested in that. And then a read immediately was like, nope, that's a total turd.
Andrew Did you send me any of these links?
Everett I did. I sent you the link. This is called the Orient Revival World Map Watch. This is a very 70s... dial with an inner rotating 24 hour bezel. There's a problem about that. It's not about the bezel itself, but rather it's about the watch's lack of a hand or complication to be able to utilize that 24 hour bezel.
Andrew You have to balance it against the 12 o'clock of your watch.
Everett And even if you do that, it will give you a reference, but it won't Keep time.
Andrew No.
Everett So if you want to use this as a reference quickly, well, you're like, oh, well, I need to know what time it's going to be.
Andrew You have to memorize the GMT pluses. Okay. You have to know your time zones.
Everett Now, this watch is neat.
Andrew It is lovely also.
Everett It's got a really interesting dial. The dial is a sort of exploded earth from the perspective of the South Pole.
Andrew A little bit of a flat earth.
Everett So you get a, you know, small... South America that tracks into an extremely wide North America because circles get narrower to lower. Anyway, and then, of course, Europe and Asia take up, you know, 33%. Anyway, long story short, it's interesting. It's interesting. There's this orange-yellow, there's this candy corn-colored scheme on the continents, and then these two blue... But it's so dumb. Okay. It doesn't work. It just doesn't work.
Andrew It's just a... Orient got 90% of the way and they were like, yeah, we're not going to make this complication work.
Everett I saw it and I was like, whoa, really cool. Interesting. And then I was like, no, it's fucking dumb.
Andrew All they had to do was add... a single small track of numbers, pluses and minuses, to the inside of that total.
Unknown And even that wouldn't have worked because there's no GMT hand.
Everett So this is part of Orient's 75th anniversary, and I gather there's no GMT hand.
Andrew No, that would work against, like, if you were familiar with your GMT plus or minus, if you knew the GMT plus or minus of where you were at, then you could do the math. You can do the math without that. But it would be two movements, and that's all it would have taken. If they had added that plus or minus... Then what? It's still dumb. It is still dumb, but at least it would have been almost functional.
Unknown That's no more functional, because you know how far you are. I don't. But then you can't set the time, dummy. But I would learn it. And then you know it, so you don't need the fucking watch to tell it to you. I don't do fast math, man.
Everett You've got to do it no matter what, I guess is my point. You would have to do it no matter what. Even if you have that, you still have to do the math.
Andrew Maybe I don't understand how math works. Anyway, it's dumb. It is. It's a big miss. It's a big orient. It's dumb. Show their butt. Look inside of the kimono. Hey, we're not going to go all the way. We're just going to get some of the way and call it good.
Everett So Orient has done this stuff in the past where they have something that looks like a complication when in reality it's just sort of like a trick of, you know, sort of like a... It's just like some shit on the dial. But sometimes it's clever. This is not clever.
Andrew It's rarely clever.
Everett Well, like my perpetual calendar is clever, right? It is. At least when it worked, it was clever. It's run out of years, and so it's no longer clever. But when it worked, it was clever.
Unknown Right. It almost.
Everett But that's not a perpetual calendar.
Unknown It's not a perpetual calendar.
Everett That's a five year calendar. Well, I think it's like I think it actually gives you like it gave you like 60 years. Like I think it went from like 1968 to 2015. However many years that is like 55 years or something. But but this isn't even that. This isn't even that. This is like this is just a map on the dial with with numbers.
Andrew Yeah, a 24-hour internal rotating bezel. Whatever. With no way to measure it against. And the internal... Let's move on.
Everett We don't shit-talk things all that often, but that one deserved it.
Andrew But we'll shit-talk Orient, because Orient... That one deserved it. And Citizen both get between 80% and 90% of the way, and then they phone it in... And that delta is so bad. So Meistersinger has a new release.
Everett This is the gold DLC one?
Andrew It's the gold DLC one. No, so it's a black DLC case with a gold dial. And it is lovely. It is a calf leather yellow strap. There's a black option. Yeah, you can get this on a black.
Everett Yeah, yeah.
Andrew I think on black is really the choice. But also... I think it's black. But also, when you look at them side by side, I think I'm more inclined towards the golden strap with the golden dial. I'm looking them side by side, too. Like, I... These are interesting, man. I think the black strap makes it look like a Nixon. And the gold strap makes it look like not. even though both of them kind of have a Nixon-esque feel with the gold with the single hand. These are 100% not my favorite Meister Singers ever. But it's cool, and there's only 50 of each, and so they're only going to be available for a short time.
Everett Do we know what Cayennos means?
Andrew No. It's maybe in one of the write-ups, but no, I don't know, and I don't care. I think it's a cool release. I'm a big Meister Singer fangirl, and I can't wait to see them in person. Yeah. These are fine. They're fine. They're fine. And they're fun. And everything Meister Singer does is fine and fun. I just really want to see their case finishing in person. And that will be... That'll be how I make my decision.
Everett I think it's great. I think that their case finishing is... It has to be. Particular. But I just think they're... I mean, I'm going to say they're a one-trick pony. That's a little unfair. I think they're the one-hand pony. dragging itself along. They're a one-hand pony. I liked that one. It came back to me. I was like, I chewed on it. I was like, yeah, it's good. Tissot released a perfectly boring $500 watch this week that is worth talking about on our show.
Andrew Agreed.
Everett Um, so Tissot has in, it's a little tricky. If you go to like the Tissot website, they've got the classic dream collection and these have been sold, I think primarily in 42 minute or 42 millimeter quartz versions up to now. Tissot this week introduced a Powermatic. And what the watch is, it's just a really simple three-hander. It's a simple dress three-hander with nary a bit of loom.
Andrew Like an actual dress watch, but in 40 millimeters.
Everett Big, yeah. And so Tissot released that with a Powermatic 80 this week. And instead of being 42, it's 40 millimeters. This is a 40 by 20. Powermatic 80 dress watch, which is good. It's good. What you won't find in any of the marketing materials is that it's about 10-3 thick. So 50 meters of water resistance and about 10-3 thick on this thing, which is terrific. And they cost roughly, I think it's $520 on the Tissot website. And, you know, it really is not – it's really not a – so blue dial is the only one that they're going to show in the link that we sent you. But if you go to the Tissot website, they've got several dials. They've got six case variations. That's right. So you've got – The steel cases, you've got two-tone cases with gold bezels, both in rose and yellow gold. There's obviously DLC. And then you've got full rose and full yellow gold DLC cases as well. So black and silver dials, blue dials. There is a yellow, like sort of a champagne yellow dial. Champagne, yeah. These are really pretty good. And it's odd. It's hard for me to say, like, you need to go get this watch. But I think that this is such a good beginner watch.
Andrew Yeah, and with the Powermatic 80, I think it's kind of, you know, it's the Bambino.
Everett Well, you know, the Bambino V7, the 38 millimeter Bambino V7, I think is terrific. And I really, if you're looking at a watch, I'm going to throw that out there. But there's something about this, the Swiss Tissot, that's just sort of no frills, automatic, 200-1. Why not go 36 or 37 on this? Yeah, I mean, 38 I think would be fun. And maybe if they sell enough of them, that'll happen. I think 40 is okay. Because of who this is for, I actually think 40 is kind of like a good decision.
Andrew Maybe, yeah.
Everett Because you know what? This is for the guy who text messages you. at three 30 on a Thursday afternoon. It was like, Hey, long time. No talk to thinking about buying a watch budgets, 435 bucks, you know, or whatever, 400 bucks. And you're like, you know what? I got some things. Take a look at these. This is on my list.
Andrew Yeah. It's, it's not off my list. It's certainly not that Orient world timer.
Everett And, you know, well, no, it's hard to find anything to complain about here. The water resistance is the only thing you can complain about. You would like this to be slightly smaller, and that's a fair criticism, Andrew, but 40? But I want it to be smaller. Yeah, that's right. 40 is right there. It's not too big, nor is it too small.
Andrew I think universally, I think as a general, like if a fella who just like goes to work every day and then takes his watch off on Friday and puts it on the dresser, this is a good watch for him.
Everett Yeah, because you know what? Come Monday morning, it's still going to be tone time.
Andrew Yeah. Yeah. He's going to shower with it, do the dishes in it, and it's going to be totally okay. Yep. More water resistance than a paddock. What else have you got? I don't really care about anything else.
Everett Yeah, you know, Spinnaker and Sekonde Sekonde introduced a watch that I think deserves a bit of talking about. This is a re-release of their 50 Phantoms watch, which I think they actually called the 47 plus 3 Phantoms. These are both available in a 40 and a 43 millimeter dive watch. So... I can't remember what Spinnaker calls this mid case. Anyway, this is a really clever watch and it's got a brand new bezel that if you see from the side, looks like a wavy crown.
Andrew It does look cool. And top down, the scalloping on the crown is cool, or on the bezel is cool. Deep scalloping, yeah. Yeah, there's nothing offensive about this watch.
Everett So we've got a Seiko movement in the 43-millimeter version, Miota movement in the 40-millimeter variant, 525 for the 40, 475 for the 43. I think the 40 is the better of the two. Yeah, I think 43 is a little squished. It's just a really clever release, and I love the fact that they came back to it. They released this in a very tiny version last Halloween, and people... Got upset because they couldn't get one, and then they released a less limited version after that.
Andrew Anyway, I just... They're still dropping 1,000 and 1,100 pieces of both.
Everett There's going to be a lot of these, yeah. It's a really cool watch, and I like these a lot.
Andrew That's a cool release.
Everett And I think that's the last thing I felt like I really wanted to talk about.
Andrew Yeah, I wasn't super excited about anything else.
Everett There's the beautiful new Oris big crown pointer date with the Indian summer dial. It's a beautiful dial. If you're interested in that watch, it's, this is a really cool, it's got a deer skin strap. Uh, Andrew, other things. What do you got?
Andrew Okay. So I had another thing and then, and then I watched a documentary today and I changed my other thing. I watched the documentary. I like me today and it is on Amazon and, And it is a John Candy documentary kind of referencing the planes, trains, and automobiles quote after Steve Martin berates him where he's like, you know what? I like me and my wife likes me. And that's the whole thing. So I'm like, I grew up on John Candy movies, right? Like you did and like many of the people who listen to us did. And they hold this special place in my heart.
Unknown Yeah.
Andrew And so I was like, oh, a John Candy doc. Okay. I turn it on. And it immediately starts with all these like cold set scenes of Home Alone and Uncle Buck and Blues Brothers. And these like really iconic John Candy movies. And immediately you see it and you recognize where you're looking at. Like you're looking out the hallway of of the of the school in uncle buck when he like walks out of the principal's office and you're looking up the stairs of home alone and you're looking into the prison scene and you're just like okay and then you get this voiceover from bill murray talking about john candy and how much he loves john candy and that kind of cuts to uh the interview with that that interview cut with bill murray where he's like i kind of hope you can find somebody who can say something bad about him because i wish i could That's really like compelling. Yeah. And so immediately my eyes are kind of like get damp. And my eyes remained damp for the entirety of this documentary. Because John Candy and Chris Farley are these contemporaries, and I kind of always equated them to each other. They both died really young, and they died really suddenly. And I just sort of figured it was for the same reason. I just sort of figured John Candy was... Like he just overdosed and died. And I never really ever thought about it again. And then this documentary, it's directed by Colin Hanks. And it has these interviews with all these people. throughout John Candy's life, like childhood friends, people who came up with him in the Toronto comedy scene, people who he met when he got to Hollywood, who just like, it's this beautiful story of John Candy as this like really tormented person. Cause all comedians are just like deeply tormented, but his outlet was like, caring and loving for other people. Like Martin Short talks about how every time they went to dinner, they're all making the same amount of money. None money. Like they're stand-up comedians at a comedy club in Toronto. And John Candy would always buy the bill. Like he'd always pay for dinner because that was just his thing. And it was just a beautiful documentary of John Candy. And as somebody who grew up on John Candy movies, like his... Like the cutting back and forth into home videos and cuts into movies that he was in was just so well done. And I cannot wait for the next Colin Hanks documentary on somebody who like had a real positive impact because that's like the lasting impact of candy is. how positive his influence was on the people around him. It was the most beautiful documentary I've ever watched. That's a good rack, Andrew. So definitely watch it and enjoy. I like it. Okay, what you got?
Everett So I am not the right person to talk about this, much like I'm not the right person to talk to you about watches or anything or knives or watches for that matter. But I've been sort of engaged in the fountain pen hobby now for quite a while. Two years. Maybe.
Andrew In the neighborhood, yeah.
Everett And in that time, I think I've gone through maybe 25 or 30 different fountain pens, sort of brought stuff in and out. And I've settled on, I've got like a handful of fountain pens that I really like. It's maybe not that many. It's probably closer to 20.
Andrew That's a handful.
Everett But I've settled on, I think at this point, like five or six fountain pens that I think are just really, really terrific. And for a long time, I had, I was kind of struggling with like, It just seemed like there was this gap in the entry-level gold fountain pen world.
Andrew So if you know anything about... Well, yeah, because that's an expensive material.
Everett If you know anything about fountain pens, what you know is that there's a whole bunch of fountain pens that you can get for... between you know 25 and about 150 dollars that have steel nibs and a steel nibbed fountain pen is a fine beautiful wonderful thing but then you make this jump into gold fountain pens and the prices get astronomical because you're using 14 or 18 karat gold usually to make these nibs and and just cost of materials right But a gold fountain pen nib is considered, I think, by many to be superior, certainly more luxurious, whether that's physically or just sort of intrinsically.
Andrew What's the actual writing experience between a well-made steel and a poorly made gold nib?
Everett Okay, so I'm going to answer that question indirectly, though. So I have a bunch of fountain pens that cost too much money, right? Like $350, $400 or more, right? And that's just too much. I think it's too much money to spend on a fountain pen as someone who owns several fountain pens that have cost that much money.
Andrew Especially when the Declaration of Independence was written with a quill.
Everett Right, right. So, but I really, I was like, you know what? There's got to be, so there are a few pens. So there's this platinum, this pen from a company called Platinum, 1776. Platinum has their entry-level gold fountain pen, and I have one. And you know what? It's okay. I don't mind it. The 3776th century. I'm not linking to it. There is a company called Sailor, and they have their ProGear Slim fountain pen. Now, both of these pens, both the Platinum and the Sailor pens, I just didn't like the nibs. And I was like, you know what? I would just assume use a steel-nibbed pen that was less money. These pens are kind of dinky. I thought the Platinum is okay. Uh, the sailor is just too small and these nibs are kind of stiff. Now I have got what's called a pilot custom eight, two, three phone pen, which is not entry level. And it's about a 350 or $400 pen. Um, and, and I got mine used from, uh, like a friend and it was less money than that. But, uh, It is lovely, but it's not an entry-level fountain pen. I had, for whatever reason, there is another pen. It's called the Pilot Custom 74, and that's our other thing. I had gone years now without trying this pen, and I picked one up on a flyer for about $85. Now, I'm just going to tell you, you're not going to find one of these for $85. These go for about $200 new. On the Amazon. and sometimes they're a little bit more, sometimes they're a little bit less, but usually $200. You can, in non-tariff times, you can sometimes get them from Japan for about $130 to $150. Maybe that's still the case. I don't know. I picked one of these up on a flyer, and I was like, holy crap. This is it. This is the one I've been looking for. This is the entry-level gold fountain pen. I think so. If you start getting into fountain pens, you will read so many opinions on what makes a good nib. You asked me the question just a moment ago. What is the difference? I find a steel nib to be a stiff, oftentimes a stiff experience where the nib itself is not sort of flowing with you. I find a good gold nib. To be soft. So I'm talking about a Mont Blanc nib. I'm talking about a Pelican nib. I'm talking about a Pilot nib. To be soft and luxurious and springy. And you get that. with the Pilot Custom 823 for sure. But for about $200 less with a Pilot Custom 74, you are getting most of that. If you want a gold nib, I think, if you want a gold nib experience for as little money as possible, It's the Pilot Custom 74. It's a good size. If you're a giant-handed monster, some people in the fountain pen world say it's too small. It's a really decent-sized pen.
Andrew It looks really reasonably sized.
Everett Really reasonably sized. And I think it is.
Andrew Especially for most people who are used to writing with like a zebra. 100%, Andrew. Like it might even feel big for people accustomed to writing with like a Bic or a zebra. Correct. Or a pencil or, you know, take your pick.
Everett Yes. 100%, Andrew. It is a really reasonably sized pen. And for me, for 200 bucks, you are getting the full gold nib experience. I think Pilot's gold nibs are as good as anything else out there, right? I think a Pilot gold nib is as good as a Montblanc nib. I'll just say it. And I'm not, again, I'm not the expert. If you want to know about why that is, ask somebody else and they'll tell you why I'm wrong. I think as a guy who uses fountain pens, this nib is as good as a Pilot, say, 149 or 146, maybe not 149, 146, a Montblanc 146. I think these are really comparable pens in every way. In every way.
Andrew That's a bold statement.
Everett For $200, you're getting a watch that I think competes very closely with a Montblanc 146. It's a pen, not a watch. That's right.
Andrew We were talking about watches, and we are currently talking about pens.
Everett It's really, really good. The Pilot Custom 74, I think for $200, if you stopped there, you would be happy. And in fact, happier.
Andrew Or you might have ignited an addiction.
Everett That could happen, too. Pilot custom 74.
Andrew I mean, you're looking... You know, if only Pilot was like a drug dealer and they were like, first one's free.
Everett Right. It could be a good business model.
Andrew I really think it is for stuff like that.
Everett Yeah. You know, I think... I know I've talked about other fountain pens, but I think it kind of took me a while to get to a place where I was like, this is the one.
Andrew This is the one. You've talked about many a fountain pen.
Everett Andrew, anything else you want to add? I'm so excited to see you guys this weekend. I'm excited to see you. I'm excited to see them too. Yeah. You know what? Next week's episode might be a little weird. We don't know exactly what it's going to look like yet, but it should be some stuff from the show.
