Speaker
Andrew Hello, fellow watch lovers, nerds, enthusiasts, or however you identify. You're listening to 40 in 20, the Watch Clicker podcast with your hosts, Andrew and my good friend Everett. Here, we talk about watches, food, drinks, life, and other things we like. Everett, how are you? I'm terrific. Thank you for asking, Andrew. You're welcome. I don't usually ask, so I figured today we'd switch it up and just check in.
Everett That's right. Yeah, no, I'm doing well. It was a nice Sunday. I did wind up working a little bit, which is always kind of a bummer, but got that done, chilling at home, going to record a podcast, maybe drink a beer. I got you Topo Chico's. Sick, sick, sick, sick. So I was telling Will this, I believe on Friday, maybe Saturday, that I recently had a ranch water at one of our frou-frou bars we have in town here. I had a ranch water, and they made it with some sort of... like cordial liqueur that was jalapeno infused okay they didn't use very much they just basically floated it on top of the ranch water uh but it was so good and i don't know what it was i can't remember what he told me what it was and the words and then you got that ranch water down and It was really good, and I forgot. And I've been kind of thinking about it this weekend. And the easy thing would be to go in or to call them and say, what was that? But it got me thinking about, what could I make? I'm sure I could make something rad at the house. So I think I'm going to... I think this week I'm going to embark in a... some sort of jalapeno infusion project uh just candy some yeah well i was thinking um i was thinking i could do just like a straight like non-alcoholic cordial like just take two cups of sugar and a pound of and a pound of jalapenos and stick them in a mason jar um And so I might try that, and I might also do, like, I don't know, something else and see. I'm thinking there's a few, like, there's a few boozes that seem like they could work. You know, Marnier, maybe Grand Marnier, or... What do you call that?
Andrew I bet triple sec would be a really good platform to infuse with.
Everett The problem is I don't want to do something that's super low proof, right? Because then it'll be... When I make my cordial, I'm going to make it really high potency. So whatever product I come up with with that will be at a tiny little bit. But I think if I were to do like... I think there is a Mexican liqueur called Damiana. And I might try something like that. It's like, I think like 70 proof or 30%. And then there's also like Aldo Amaros, right? You can do it with an Amaro or you could do it with Grand Marnier. I think triple sec is usually like really low proof though. Super low proof, like almost...
Andrew Simple sugar proof.
Everett I think Cointreau is a triple sec. I think Grand Marnier is like a, what do you call it? Not brandy, but a cognac.
Andrew Yeah, I think it is. I don't actually know right off the top of my head.
Everett Something like that, though. But it kind of does a similar thing. Anyway, long story short, I've been thinking about that today. So I've got some plans for a ranch water... side that i'm gonna i'm gonna go get a bunch of jalapenos and for a twist for your ranch water yeah get weird with it you could also just buy the canned ranch water how fucking boring yeah yeah i could that's fine it's fine no but like but it's not as good as like a fresh ranch water no objectively not okay that's why it also just requires that's why yeah as opposed to any effort you've answered the question
Andrew Andrew, how are you? I'm also good. I also worked a little bit today, which wasn't a bummer. I got to work at a baseball game and high five a bunch of people, shake some babies, kiss some hands, just generally kick it, which is a really great way to be at work if you have to be at work. And yeah, I came home and... whole family was in catch up on three weeks of not doing anything around the house because of just general mayhem chore mode. So I participated in that, made euros for dinner, tried grilling watermelon for the first time and it turned out really good. It was, uh, so I just took watermelon cause we, we have a watermelon chopped up and in the fridge and I was like, I bet that'd be good on the grill. Like why not? So I threw it out on a paper towel, let it kind of soak up a little bit of the moisture, and I tossed it with a hot honey dry rub that I have and threw it on the grill and just kind of let it go and caramelized really nicely. I think the best way to describe it is... watermelon LaCroix with like caramel notes. Cause the, the watermelon flavor kind of evaporated off, but you got that really good, like caramely charry flavor. Uh, tasty though. Yeah. Tasty. Next time I'm gonna go thicker chunks of watermelon and a hotter grill. Okay. I like it. Yeah. It was good. The gyros were good.
Everett How did you make gyros?
Andrew So I have experimented with the method and my method is now sound. I take my meat and I'm doing a 50% pork shoulder chicken thigh grind mix and I season it up with the shawarma mixture seasoning that I have. Okay. And then I make a meat. I make it into a meatloaf and bake it oh okay and i i go like 350 for an hour or so like you would a meatloaf yeah yeah and then i let it rest for a while and kind of reabsorb all the fat and then i thin slice it and throw it on previously into a pan but this time onto the griddle just to kind of crisp the outside a little bit and then scoop it all back up and throw it into a pan sounds delicious It's the way to do it. I've tried taking that same mixture and just throwing it direct onto the griddle. It just dries it out. You need, you need it to soak all the fat back into it. Uh, so doing it as a meatloaf, I've smoked it before and it's pretty good. Um, but this method is sound.
Everett You know, I like, I really like the idea of doing like a rotisserie meat, you know, where you, but it's, it's just no fucking way.
Andrew Yeah. No, and you need a vertical rotisserie, which is a whole kitchen appliance.
Everett I mean, there's ways you could fake it, but there's ways you could do that, right? Traditional. Anyway, long story short, I think about it every once in a while. I'm like, I'm going to go get 10 pounds of meat.
Andrew I mean, so I've done I've tried baking it on a vertical spit. And honestly, the meatloaf method creates the same thing. All right.
Everett Cool, cool. Andrew, in any event, we're not here to talk about. We're not here to talk about meat, Lebanese meats or or any such thing. Rather, we're here to talk about watches and watches we will talk about. I'm going to say I'm glad we had two weeks worth of material. There was a lot. We're not going to get to... Oh, I, you know, I, I thought that, I mean, there were a lot of watches, but I just felt like there weren't a lot of interesting watches.
Andrew Right.
Everett And maybe, and maybe I mean interesting, like interesting for me. Like there's just weren't a lot of watches that I was like, this is so cool. Uh, there was a lot of things that were presented to the world as if they were cool. But then I was like, this actually just isn't that interesting. That was my opinion. But since you think there are so many great things, let's hear one of these.
Andrew I want to talk about what is maybe the most exciting release of the year, and I think will hold this title for the remainder of the year. Okay, let's hear it. Snoopy on the Moon Swatch. Come on. I love the Moon Swatch. I love the idea of the Moon Swatch. I'm over the moon swatch. I'm just over it. Every other week, a new SKU. It was only a matter of time before the colorway on this is really fantastic. Got a good moon phase, an earth phase, a Snoopy, blue on the dial, a really, really good blue case. blue strap. It's just the colorway is fantastic, but come the fuck on. Come up with something new. I'm done with Moon Swatch. I don't even want one anymore. That's how over them I am. Yeah, it's a weird product.
Everett It's a product that, I don't know, has made people, like, for whatever reason, there's this, like, vein of watch people that have gotten, like, weird about the moon swatch. I'm going to count you as one of them. I'm not weird. I'm just over it. No, it's weird. It's weird to be over something. So Zach Kazan published an article this week that was, like... I mean, Zach is a pretty level-headed guy. He's like, this must be AI that came up with this. In fact, I hope it is because it's not. And it's like, I get it. I don't know that far because this is well executed. You're not pumped about it, but like... And it's like, oh, it's a profit-squeezing grab. And I'm like, yeah, it's fucking commerce.
Andrew Yes.
Everett Yes.
Andrew Yeah. I'm just over it. I want to see. They just keep going back to the well. And frankly, the well has not run dry.
Everett I mean, I will just say, I will just say, you said there were so many things you didn't think we were going to get to everything, and yet, this is the first thing you wanted to talk about.
Andrew Because I want to talk about the most exciting release of the year that will hold the title for the remainder of it. It's the most boring release of the year. It's the 10,000th moon swatch skew.
Everett For my part, I actually really like the color.
Andrew The color's fantastic. And the execution's great. If this is like number 10 SKU, I'm excited about it. Number 5,010, I'm like, I'm over it.
Everett I don't understand why we're limited, right? So the whole idea of Swatch is we're gonna release a bunch of them. There's gonna be 8 billion different colors. And you're gonna have one that probably not very many other people are gonna have because there's so freaking many of them. That's the whole idea of Swatch. That is actually what Swatch does. And so the fact that they're doing that with the Speedmaster, I think is like perfect, right? We're going to have 8 trillion of these and everybody's going to have one different.
Andrew I will say too, this is the most likely one I am to buy.
Everett I can't remember. There was one we talked about recently and I was like, I think this one's the best one, but like my favorite of all the ones that have come out. But anyway. Uranus was my favorite. Anyway, this is... It's fun. It is making people grumpy. But the fine people at the Swatch group have released a blue moon Swatch with a moon phase and an earth phase and Snoopy and Woodstock and... Some really fun elements.
Andrew There are. I'm just.
Everett Like one of the moons has like a net on it because the moon phase was sort of like created after the Sturgeon moon. Anyway, there's just some fun stuff. It's cool. But there's a lot of them. It's not the most interesting thing in the world. No. Speaking of not the most interesting thing in the world. Oris has released their Diver 65 chronograph in a silver dial with what they're calling ocean green accents, which ocean green sort of seems like sort of a brown, like sort of a...
Andrew It looks like baby poop green. I think that's how I would more accurately describe the color. Yeah, that's right. It's sort of like a... But it's a good green. It's kind of like mossy, jungly baby poop. That's right.
Everett Sort of drabby, olivey. Anyway, it's a beautiful Diver 65 chronograph. And I was like, this is cool. This is a watch that I would like to have. We've got a 60-minute scale on the bezel because it's the Diver 65. We've got a chronograph with a 30-minute counter, a bi-compact with a 30-minute counter. It's a Diver 65, right? So you're going to have a relatively thick watch, all things said and done, coming in, I think, at like 15 1⁄2 thick. Yes, it's thick. But a lot of that is carried under the case. So because it's that Diver 65 profile, the mid case is really thin and it sits up high.
Andrew Kind of a FUPA thing going.
Everett Yes, and it's got a big AS. But again, as we discussed last week with Andrew, for a lot of people, that's going to position that case back in between your radius and ulna and it's going to wear really low and nice.
Andrew Suck right in, yep.
Everett It's a caliber or is caliber 771, which is a Selita 510 architecture. It's a fairly simple four Hertz chronograph with 48 hour power reserve. And this is coming in at like 4,000 bucks ish. 3750 euros is the price I have in front of me, but I think I saw that it's about $4,000 US. And they're available now? Yeah, on the bracelet, it's 3,900 euros. Oh, I see. Yeah. I see. Yeah, I think these are pretty cool.
Andrew It's a Diver 65.
Everett Well, it's a Diver 65 chronograph, and I like the colorway.
Andrew It's a good color. It's a good silver. I like silver gray dials.
Everett I like that the Diver 65 is a bi-compact, too. It sort of works with what they're doing with the Diver 65, right? It's 100 meters of water resistance. They're going to give you bi-compact. It's not going to be like some weird tri-compact. It's a bi-compact 30-minute timer.
Andrew You get exactly this. With 100 meters of water resistance. There's not like a weird third sub-register or a third register that you're like, oh, what are we going to do? Are we going to do running seconds? Are we going to do a date wheel?
Everett We're going to keep this really simple.
Andrew We're just going to give you chronograph functionality here. That's right.
Everett And it's affordable. I mean, $4,000 is a lot of money for a watch, but it's... in the grand scheme of things, affordable.
Andrew It fits nicely in the Oris line.
Everett And it's interesting because we had speculated, I can't remember what they've called the sort of new version of the three-hand Diver 65. They're calling it something different now, right? Anyway, but they're still releasing Diver 65 models. So it'll be interesting to see what they do. They're still calling them Diver 65. So it'll be interesting to see what Oris' plan is with that IP. Like just what we call it, right? The new watch is clearly a Diver 65, but they're calling it something different.
Andrew It doesn't matter because we're going to move on.
Everett Yeah.
Andrew Braymont. Yeah. This is a really exciting release. I really like this. So, Braymont has gone... Sorry, Andrew. Quickly. Diver's Date. They're calling it the Diver's Date. The double D. So, Braymont... is going back to early in their catalog with the Altitude MB with the meteor orange barrel. So the MB is an early era of the early 2000s Bremont designed to survive the forces of an actual ejection from an aircraft because this is an aviator's And sometimes in the absolute worst case scenario, you have to jettison yourself from your aircraft. And you sort of hope that the instruments that you're wearing survive that. So this watch was originally designed to survive that really unpleasant experience. Bremont is this... maybe pubescent right now. Like we've talked about this recently, even that Braymont is like finding its way perhaps out of an identity crisis.
Everett Wow. I mean, Braymont's been taken over by venture capital and I don't know if that's an identity crisis, but there's, yeah, there's been big changes. Yeah.
Andrew Which has led to some weird, not necessarily weird changes, Curious things. This is a slam dunk. This watch is a 42 millimeter case, 12.23 thick, 49.3 lug to lug, grade two titanium case. Movement is a base of a Lejou Pareji 100. And it is fantastic. So this barrel design is a knurled orange barrel in the mid case, twin stick, internal rotating bezel, three hand movement date at the three o'clock. I'm smitten with the head of this watch. It's fantastic. It like it has interesting vintage feels like kind of 70s vintage feels, but very modern, like not Jetsons modern, like a 70s watch trying to look like it's 2020, but a 2020 watch kind of inspired by. Classic pilot's watch. The balance on the second hand is this like alternating wide white marker with black kind of stripes within it. Great handset on it. It's just terrific. I dig the font and the way they did the lume on the markers. And then... This great knurled barrel in the mid case. We have a white and a black dial available. The sizing on it's perfect for a very by design pilot's watch. And I love the head of this watch. And then we get to the bracelet. Not a fan. Not a fan. It is a really interesting single kind of Y link bracelet. But the end link. has me scratching my head. The end length is about half the length of the lugs, which make this kind of faux male end link sort of knot and kind of work. And when you look at pictures. It looks like it rides really nicely because of the lug to lug, but that that dimension where your first link is halfway into your lugs is just really strange for me. And I think if you have a shorter wrist and that bracelet doesn't break but wraps sooner than at the end of the lugs as you would on a wider wrist, it's just going to look weird. You're going to have your lugs protruding past your bracelet. I like the design of the single link, and I like the look. I just want that end link to be more appropriately sized for the lugs. The rest of this I am totally into. €6,000 on a titanium bracelet? This is...
Everett This is a banger. So I'm a big fan of the triptych construction. I can't remember how long they've been doing this, but it's been a while. That's Braymont's three-piece construction. I think that this is the... I think that this is like... the original triptych case. Um, this is where it started. So there's, there's plenty of, um, there's plenty of intrigue. I think in the watch, I don't love, I don't love the new logo. I really, I really do wish that the new logo was, was de-emphasized. I don't particularly like Bremont's old logo either. So, I just think they're emphasizing in a way that I find unappealing. But that's subjective. I actually think this watch is pretty neat. I've got to say I'm not upset. It's great movement. It's overpriced like every single Bremont ever made. I think they get away with it because they're using their three-piece case construction. I also think the knurling, like the size of the knurling is a little crude, Andrew.
Andrew Oh, no, I like that. You like it? Yeah, I like that it's like big, gnarly, almost overstated. It was...
Everett I read it as a decision and not as a... No, certainly, yeah. There are a couple of elements that I saw. I was like, eh. And I'm with you, though. These are decisions. One, I think personally the knurling's a little big. I think that they're alternating the black and white striping they have both around the date window and... and on the loop on that second hand i don't i just get rid of it i like it i don't okay well it looks like the the pull handle on an injection that's right you're right about it i just don't it's a nod to the thing it's not doing it for me it does it for me so that and that's fair right um that's fair yeah it's a weird watch it i like it i i have i have a hard time not liking it subjectively it's not for me
Andrew What I'll say is with that design cue, those alternating lines, it does kind of feel like AV8. That's right. That is exactly my thought, Andrew. It feels a touch of like a kitschy design decision.
Everett I almost just said, Andrew, I almost just said it feels like a Darden brand, like this is an AV8.
Andrew But it's subtle, right? It's in two very subtle places. It's not splattered all over the dial. Those are the only two nods to this being what it is. For my taste, it could be a little bit more subtle. I mean, yeah. I mean, you're not wrong in that.
Everett Do you remember a few years ago, Andrew, when... I have a very, my memory of this has turned out to be different than what actually happened. Does that happen to you sometimes?
Andrew No, that's not how it goes. I feel myself sitting in Kim's seat right now as we begin down this road.
Everett Well, so I have a... Sorry, it does happen to me sometimes. And this is one of those times. My recollection is that a few years ago... that Seiko released a limited edition alpinist with Hodinkee. That there was a Hodinkee limited edition blue alpinist. I remember that. So, that's not what happened. Rather, Seiko released a limited blue Alpinest that they sold for a period of time exclusively through Hodinkee. And it was not a Hodinkee. Anyway, long story short.
Andrew That feels like a... That's an exclusive. That's not a collaboration. That's an exclusive. That's a Hodinkee special edition.
Everett So in my mind, there was a Hodinkee special edition. Even people from Hodinkee are a little bit like... funny about this question because I've seen it discussed a few times. I went back and looked and I was like, the fuck? And even people from Hodinkee are like, well, my recollection is... If you're the only ones allowed to sell it, it's yours. But they weren't the only ones. They had a period of exclusivity where they were the only retailer for it and then that ended. And then that ended and they... And then you could buy it other places. Anyway, long story short. It was a really beautiful alpinist. It had a great sunburst blue dial. Well, Seiko is now releasing a European exclusive blue alpinist, which instead of a sunburst dial, appears to me to have like sort of a grained matte blue dial. And it's a really good blue. Kind of denim-y texture. And it's got some really good sort of orange subdued, low saturation orange accents. And it costs way too much. It's a 6R35, and I think they're selling this thing for like well over $1,000 US if you were to do the conversions.
Andrew 930 Swiss francs, so probably like 1,200 bucks. Yeah.
Everett Yeah, so I don't mean too much, but it's a lot of money, especially when you think like... When you get the Alpinist for $600 to $800. A Saab 017, I think, used to retail at $600. Not all that long ago. So anyway, it's neat. I like it. It caused lots of internal confusion for me because I was like, wait, what?
Andrew Anyway. And Alpinist is kind of becoming a platform they're doing a lot of limited releases with, right? Seiko has these platforms that they do tons of SKUs of, and the Alpinist is, they're doing tons of short run SKUs. Yeah. And they've been doing that for, I don't know, like five years.
Unknown Yeah.
Andrew Like, oh yeah, limited to 300 pieces, 500 pieces, 70 pieces. And the Alpinist is a really good... They're doing 3,000 of these. The Alpinist is a good platform for small runs.
Everett You know, the Alpinist is, no doubt about it, one of the... Great Seiko releases of all time. I don't feel bad saying that. And they're pushing it. They're pushing it. This doesn't come with a bracelet. I need to get mine serviced. I miss wearing it. Yeah, it's a good one. You should get it serviced. No bracelet on this.
Andrew Go to Uncle Seiko and he'll hook it up.
Everett it does come with a textile nylon strap as well as a, um, like a blue Krakow grade leather, both with pretty sexy deployance. Um, and of course the upgraded movement. So Sapphire crystal. Yeah. I mean, it's good. It's good. It's weird. It's weird. There's like this, this story, like this thing that happened in the past that I remember incorrectly. Um,
Andrew I don't know if you exactly remembered it correctly. You were wrong, but also a thing happened that was not inconsistent with your memory. Seiko Prospex Speed Timer Mechanical Chronograph SRQ055. It's a baller. So this is a three register chronograph, 42 millimeter case, 14.6 thick, 49 and a half lug to lug, 100 meters of water resistance, the 8R48 chronograph movement. acceptable price point under three thousand bucks for a mechanical chronograph that looks like the 40 and 20 chronograph with a black dial black registers and it is good speed timer is obviously a um when was it originally released uh well speed timer goes back to the 60s yeah 69 yeah was an original release um And this has been a watch that has been in the Seiko catalog periodically. And this is the new iteration. And it is really cool.
Everett Yeah, no, I mean, this is great. So we might as well talk about them all together. So we're going to talk about a whole bunch of speed timer releases right now. This sort of really straightforward black-on-black speed timer release, I think, is the one... Of these that is really, really hard to say a single thing bad about.
Andrew Permanent collection. Yeah. Very like 70s inspired. Like when you think of a Seiko chronograph, this is where you go.
Everett Yeah. We've got a hundred meters of water resistance. We've got a fantastic dial. We've got good fonts. We've got a great tack meter. We've got excellent, like Seiko sort of almost grammar of design, like case, uh, you know, it's a chronograph. So it's an automatic chronograph. So we're, we're a little thick, um, but whatever, whatever, a hundred meters of water resistance, reasonable price, uh,
Andrew 430 date window. They're not missing that.
Everett Totally redesigned bracelet. I've yet to see really good pictures of the clasp on this. It looks to me like it's very similar to the clasp on the speed timers that came out last year. But the bracelet's different.
Unknown Mm-hmm.
Andrew Yeah, it's like, I can't tell if it's an actually articulating five link. It looks like it is. I believe so.
Everett Yeah, it looks like a five link to me.
Andrew No, it's a three link.
Everett Hmm.
Andrew Yeah, if you look at the underside, it's a three link.
Everett Oh, I see. It's a one link. There's a one big bar link that's connected.
Andrew Yeah, so instead of a full five piece, you have one big fat link with two cut in to it. But it looks good.
Everett Yeah, yeah. So they've also released... So with this, they've released a set of three limited edition Dotson... seiko um so dots and seiko speedmaster releases um there's a connection between these companies in that um well there's this uh East Africa Safari Rally in 1971, where I believe Seiko was doing the timing and Nissan 240Z won it. Nissan. Yada, yada, yada. I think Seiko was sponsoring the Datsun... nissan team at the time um and they they were connected so these three watches these three releases celebrate that release one of these is uh one of the new mechanical chronographs um And it's terrific. So, so the other, so yeah, sorry, Andrew.
Andrew Can I, can I amend your, your, your Dotson story?
Everett Yeah, go ahead.
Andrew But 240Z debuted the same year as the Speed Timer. I see. And then won the East African Safari Rally in 1971. I see, I see, I see.
Everett So, yeah, so we've got a mechanical chronograph and it's black on black as opposed to the main release where it's black on black. Oh, excuse me. Yeah. It's PVD. And you've got these great red and blue accents. So black dial... All different fonts. The fonts on this thing is all different. Totally 70s, like late 60s, early 70s fonts. We've got this red on the tachometer. We've got some blue and some red on the sub-dials. This is very muscle.
Andrew We're looking at the Tano 1969 right now before we get to the... Okay.
Everett Yeah, yeah. So I am looking at the mechanical chronograph. Yeah.
Andrew I just... I wanted to make sure we were...
Everett discussing the same watch yeah well we because there's a bunch of Seiko releases all kind of in this vein yeah so we were talking about your chronograph and now we're on to and now I'm talking about this chronograph the Datsun chronograph which is inspired by the the limited edition version of the news speed timer chronograph so this is the what are we calling it that S R Q 0 5 7 yes that's the reference on this Great Datsun logo on the case back. Yeah, it's as good as it gets. Fantastic. And it's just cool.
Andrew Datsun doesn't even do cars anymore. Nissan.
Everett Datsun's Nissan.
Andrew Right, I know, but I understand they're there, but they're not bad Datsun anymore.
Everett No, no. Not for many, many years.
Andrew I know. I think it'd be cool if they did.
Everett Yeah. You know, and I don't know if in other markets they, yeah, I don't know. I think they've been Nissan since the 90s at least. Maybe even the 80s. No. I think 90s for sure.
Andrew We can Google later. I feel like Datsun was making cars in the early 2000s. In the United States.
Everett We should Google later. And within this, there are also three or two other speed timer releases. So one of these is a Seiko or a Solar Chronograph, which has got a silver case. It's got like some... like real Moto and motor inspired elements. It's, it's, it's fine. It's the least interesting of the three of these, I think. And it's also a thousand. And then we get to a watch that we're going to talk about along with a couple of other releases. But what we have is, uh, a Seiko prospects speed timer, uh, mechanical? Is that what they're calling this?
Andrew Yes.
Everett The SPB517, which is a time and date model making its debut as part of the Datsun themed trilogy, but also as a standalone reference in the permanent collection. And we're going to talk about that in just a second. But this one, what this is, is a watch that looks a lot like an Alpinist. In that it has a 3 o'clock time crown and a 4 o'clock internal rotating bezel crown. But rather than a compass bezel, it's got a 60-minute countdown bezel. Okay. Which is fucking terrific. Yes. This thing has a big, cool... 60s Datsun logo at 6 o'clock, Seiko speed timer and the Prospex logo at 12 o'clock. It's got an alternating white and red 15-minute on the outside of the dial, but inside of the rotating internal bezel. The reds are perfect. This is a really cool watch. If you're into Nissan or Datsun at all, this is a really cool watch.
Andrew And they have two models if you're not. So. In the SPB. Take it away. 513 or 515, which is this very alpinist feeling watch that isn't alpinist feeling at all. The same kind of five link feeling, but with less, with not full length. I don't even know how to describe this. These are. Like rope ladder.
Everett Isn't this the exact same bracelet?
Andrew No, not as the... If you go to the... If you look at the speed timer, those... Oh, there's no break. Small links run the full length of the big link. But with these, the small links are bites. I think a rope ladder is the best way to describe it.
Everett So apparently now there are three speed timer bracelets. There are three different bracelets in the speed timer lineup.
Andrew Thanks, Seiko.
Everett Yeah, at least three.
Andrew And they're all pretty okay, I'm sure.
Everett Which is a little annoying.
Andrew They do look good. They look great. And this feels like 70s racing with this internal rotating 60-minute countdown timer. white dial with black markers, gray minute track, and then a black with a similar, maybe even the same gray minute track, and the same orange highlight 15-minute countdown timer.
Everett You know, it might be the same gray, but I'll tell you, it looks to me like it's a... an altogether different color, um, at least from the photographs.
Andrew I think it might be the same. I think it's one of those like optical. I think you're right. You might be from, from, from color contrast. Uh, the case on these is really good. The bracelet matches the, the design, like. Seiko just nailed it.
Everett They nailed it. Yeah, this is one of the best releases of the year for sure.
Andrew And these are coming in at 1,000 euros, still 200 meters of water resistance, 480 ohms of anti-magnetism. That's the word I was looking for. 39.5 millimeter case, 12 thick.
Everett I think it's fine for 200 meter water resistance, internal rotating bezel. I think we're good. I'm good.
Andrew Six are 55 movement. Like Seiko showed back up. Seiko has been dropping some duds or some just kind of like boring shit. And, and this is, this is not that.
Everett Yeah, this thing's fantastic. And you don't have to deal with a weird compass bezel. You actually get kind of a fun bezel. I'm going to say I don't love the handset on this. i see it though i see the the thinking behind it and for that reason i can accept it i like i like the handset better on the on the gray dial because that the stripe in the middle is black and so they look less sort of tronny yeah um But yeah, and they're 1,000 euro. I mean, this is great.
Andrew What I don't understand is why on the handset, on the white dial or the kind of cream dial, this isn't like a crispy Arctic white. This is like kind of a cream.
Everett Yeah, sort of that Seiko Sarb white.
Andrew Kind of like that soft white that you'd see on a race car, like eggshell white maybe. The white runs all the way to the end of the hand as opposed to having a black tip. Whereas on the black dial, there's a black tip on the hand side. That's a curious decision.
Everett I'm not sure I see what you're talking about, bud. So look at this hour hand. You're looking at the marker. And look at this hour hand. No. The quote-unquote tip that you're pointing out is the marker. It's the 10 o'clock marker. Sorry, you guys. We're professionals. Look.
Andrew Right here. So check it out. The loom ends right here, and there's an unloomed part of the hand. And on the white dial... It's the same.
Everett It's just a white strip. But it's not on the black... It's black on the black dial, and it's white on the white dial. That's what I just said. That is what we're talking about.
Andrew And I'm saying it should have been black on both hands. They shouldn't have changed that color. They should have blocked out that loom plot. On both handsets. It's not lume.
Everett It's paint, I think.
Andrew Whatever the fuck it is.
Everett It doesn't light up. It doesn't light up. It's not illuminated. I will be doing a choke tonight. What does that mean? I'm going to choke you after we record. I mean, I know you're frustrated because you're saying stupid shit.
Andrew No, because you're being a dum-dum.
Everett I mean, if you can make sense of the thing you're trying to say, I'm happy to hear it.
Andrew I don't want a white stripe on the tip of the hour and minute hand.
Everett I said, I like the black one better because I don't like the white strip and I prefer it to be black. And then you were like, oh my gosh, this is so weird. There's a black tip.
Andrew I might do a murder instead of a choke. We'll see how tonight goes.
Everett I mean, have at it. What's next?
Andrew Fuck you is what's next. Oh, I want to talk briefly about a watch that we have both seen several times in a new iteration in the Pekiné? Pekiné? Concorde? Oh, quick net. Yeah, I think so. I remember seeing this release. Picking a and we need to get Luke on the show. Yeah. Some French folk. This is not a brand that I think we've ever talked about, primarily because we're unable to say its name. This is a square brand. sport watch uh these came out a couple years ago um in steel and there is a new iteration in this 36 millimeter case 9.25 thick grade 5 titanium so that's the new releases these are grade 5 titanium it's unclear exactly when this year it's unclear to us exactly when this year this watch was released but we haven't talked about it yet this is the first time i'm seeing this in titanium which is why i'm gonna talk about it um 100 meters of water resistance in this really really lovely sport watch with this kind of uh vertically brushed really lovely gray titanium matched dial it just everything about this has that like very urban street wear tool watch collision feel black markers, no numerals, really subtle black, unpronounceable to either of our mouths logo at the 12 o'clock. And then that's it on the dial. Just a really, really attractive watch. The movement on this is the it's an in-house movement from them that shall not be named.
Everett Let's go with Pekine. Pekine? That's what we're going with.
Andrew Titanium bracelet, $5,000. Everything about this watch just lands. It's got this puzzle piece linked, single linked bracelet that just nails it for me. There's no misses here.
Everett Yeah, no, I'm with you. We had the conversation. I think both of us saw this watch. saw we we saw references to this watch earlier this year so maybe march ish and so when when it popped back up i think we were both like so what we think has happened is there was like sneak peeks of this released and then something in the manufacturing process got halted or whatever i from what i can tell these were supposed to actually be released in may and it seems that they're actually just now in august being released so people are getting them I don't know all that much about this company. I don't know shit about it. I did look up the company a little bit because I was curious because this watch is sort of in-house caliber. So it's a relatively young company. So 1970s company out of the Jura region of France. which specifically out of Marteau in the Jura region of France. So Jura being like just, you know, you could throw a football into Geneva from the Jura region of France. So really a watchmaking hub. The French, it's a French watchmaking hub. And... becquinet is using they're making movements from mostly with inside the juror region so they're trying to source everything within 80 kilometers of france and they're making a really cool sort of hot horology um probably in smallish numbers um probably that we're just not hearing but some really some really really cool like small seconds, day-date, some really, like, pretty cool shit. So this watch, obviously, you know, very much in that sort of steel or titanium, you know, integrated... sort of sport watch thing that everybody's gaga about myself included i think um unless you're tired of it um no i am not this looks like a castle the links on it look like the the top wall of a castle just kind of yeah yeah that's interesting cooked together i get a bit of like like it feels a bit parmigiana uh parmigiana like like the it's not anything nothing is here is like directly derivative it's gorgeous everything just like terrific size yeah um it's expensive but it's a sub 10 millimeter in i mean it's
Andrew Everything about it says $5,000 watch or more. It's fucking terrific. This is a really, really, really cool watch. Yeah, it's rad.
Everett The steel ones are great, too, for that matter.
Andrew What are the steel ones coming in at?
Everett A little bit less. Not that much less, though.
Andrew I would love to get my hands on one of these. Yeah. The crown has that same kind of cast. Maybe it's like a crown pattern, like a royal crown.
Everett A lot of their watches that you can find today-ish are terrific. These guys are really cool. It seems to me like it's a really cool company. We might have been sleeping on them. Maybe.
Andrew Maybe. What you got?
Everett Yeah, I think for me, the last, we talked about all of the Seiko. Did we talk about them all? I think the last watch for me that I'm sort of itching to talk about is the new Unimatic diving collection, the heritage, diving heritage collection. So Unimatic, Italian brand, makes really sort of, They just make interesting watches. They make interesting watches.
Andrew Everything they do is like fun and good. Even if it's a little weird. Yeah. These aren't weird though.
Everett That's right. That's right, Andrew. So I think that's the most interesting thing about this release is that these are really pretty straightforward in terms of function. Watch it. They still look very Unimatic.
Andrew They do. The Unimatic is still there, but there's nothing. Unmistakably so, yeah. There's so many of the Unimatics have like, oh, that's a little weird. I wonder why they did that. This has none of that.
Everett So nine models, but really three models in three color ways, which is to say we've got the Modelo Uno Diver, the Modelo Uno GMT, and the Modelo Tricronograph.
Andrew Differently spelled than the Modelo beer that we're drinking.
Everett And we're probably pronouncing it wrong. But each of them for this heritage diving, in the heritage diving collection, which is to say they each come in a black, a tropical brown, and a vintage navy with a terrific bezel. they each have like slightly yellowed loom and slightly yellow print on the bezel. They're great. These are great.
Andrew Yeah. Yeah, they're all good.
Everett The one I like the least is the chronograph.
Andrew Yes, concur.
Everett I'm just not, I just don't, this just doesn't feel like a natural chronograph.
Andrew It's just a single register. It looks forced. Like they had some VK 64s and they were like, what can we do to round out this collection? Cause the GMT and the three hander are fire. Yeah.
Everett Yeah, I mean, for me, I think the three-hander is the way to go. These are all super reasonably priced. So $625 for the three-hander, $750 for the GMT. Do you have a... Oh, no. $625... Oh, okay. $625 for the three-hander and the chronograph, $750 for the GMT. Yeah.
Andrew Which is, I would have liked to see the VK64 movement kind of go down a little bit relative to the three-hander, but whatever.
Everett Yeah, that's right. And they're all like basically 13 millimeters. I think the U1 and the UNGMT are both 13.2 and the U3 chronograph is 12.9. Because it's a mega quartz, the chronograph is actually the thinnest of these.
Andrew Yeah, because the VK-64 is fantastic.
Everett I don't see that any of these come... On a bracelet?
Andrew No bracelets.
Everett No bracelets, which is too bad. You know, when they released their Singer US3 chronograph, it came on a bracelet. And I said, this is a great bracelet. But that's not an option here.
Andrew Which is kind of fine for this era design. Yeah, the Singer was a $3,000 watch. Yeah. Anyway, these look good.
Everett I think they're right. I think I like I like this direction that that Unimatic is going. And I think you're right, Andrew. They very much they're not eschewing their Unimatic styling at all.
Andrew And they're not weird. They may be improved on the Unimatic styling.
Everett Anything else?
Andrew You know, I think I can close the remainder of the tabs. Andrew, other things. What you got? I got a new duffel bag this week. So we went on a little weekend trip. I went to the store to buy a North Face Base Camp. because that's just the duffel bag that makes sense to buy. It's a really good duffel bag. It's a really great duffel bag. And I get to the duffel bag section and I saw a marked down duffel bag that I've seen before and just never... done anything about i picked up a mystery ranch 60 liter missions duffel pack uh and what so duffel bags are like they in my mind duffel bags have two varieties structured and unstructured A duffel bag that retains its shape regardless of what you put in it, pack in it, and you don't have to fill it all the way. And then there's the duffel bags that don't have structure, and if they're not filled all the way, you have basically a scrotum slung over your shoulder. This is the latter. This is an unstructured, floppy duffel bag. But, so the reason I got it was because it was marked down. It was like 75 bucks instead of the usual 150. I'm a big Mystery Ranch fangirl. And I wanted to see some manufacturing from Mystery Ranch post-Yeti acquisition. And I gotta say... Do you think that's a post... Do you think that's manufactured post... I think this is post-Yeti because Yeti acquired them two years ago. Okay. I can't imagine this is... been sitting on a shelf or in the pipeline for two years.
Everett I don't know. I think it's possible, but anyway.
Andrew Possible, but they don't... Mystery Ranch isn't that big of a company.
Everett How was your experience?
Andrew I loved it. So right off the bat, the manufacturing, like the actual construction, everything feels like Mystery Ranch. It's got a fun little... diagram on the inside of your boot bag. So, so number one, it's a two pocket duffel bag with your main pocket, with your main body being like a top load. And then the bottom compartment being also a top load, but intended for boots. There is two like organizing pockets on the inside. Uh, and as mystery ranch does, they have these really fantastic, innovative connection points that are just, uh, different and make perfect sense and are objectively better than how every other strap connects to a bag uh it is fantastic it did the thing it needed to do it's a 60 liter top loading scrotum duffel bag manufactured really well and right now you can get them for 75 bucks yeah that's a great that's a great price i've long been a base camp duffel user with uh
Everett my with my medium base camp duffel being the bag i use for a trip you know a three or four day trip if it's if it's too long for my cotopaxi then i'm using the medium base camp duffel um but that looks great. I mean, that looks like it does all the things. It weighs about a third as much as the base camp double easily.
Andrew Like, yeah, it, I don't know how, cause this material is, um, it's called, uh, uh, hydro aerobic, uh, Oh, which is not Cordura. It's not.
Everett No, you can tell it's a lighter weight.
Andrew It's a lighter weight, but it has a, you can tell that it's going to be weather resistant. I don't know about water resistant. Uh, and on the inside, it is, it's got a much more water resistant membrane feel. Um, like this is something that I'm not going to be concerned about sitting on the tarmac in inclement weather.
Unknown Yeah.
Andrew I'm not going to leave it in the rain. I'm not going to put it in the bed of my truck. Yeah. but I'm not worried about water intrusion.
Everett Yeah, I mean, the base camp duffel really is overbuilt for day-to-day use, right? Which is kind of the point. Yeah. And so there are different bags. There's different products. You went to get a Basecamp duffel, ended up with this because this is actually more appropriate for what you... Exactly. But if what you like about a Basecamp duffel is that it's bomb-proof. You know, I've had my medium, I think I've had for 12 years, and it's perfect. I mean, it's not perfect. It's been beat to hell. But it's 100% functional. So... This is a slightly lighter use case, I'd say.
Andrew Yeah, and that was number one. I saw it and I was like, that's a really good deal. And I'm ready to throw the dice on this. And you're not really throwing the dice when you're buying Mystery Ranch. And it was more appropriate for what I needed it for. I need a duffel bag to be able to throw in my truck to take a weekend trip or to use as a checked bag. Because all my other duffel bags have either been taken by family members or... I use for work and have a weird odor that you can never get out.
Everett Yeah. Yeah. Um, I, uh, I have another thing, Andrew, do me. We, uh, we started, my name is Earl because the kids wanted to watch it.
Andrew so is this like first viewing for you beyond like what was it was like on in the background like when we had to watch television they didn't have netflix um no i mean we watched it kim and i watched it back when it came out and i don't know when it came out 2005 yeah so a very long time 20 years ago yeah before netflix was out and like when shit was on tv that's what you watched
Everett So the kids, kids brought it up. They like saw a tile or they saw a trailer and they were like, well, let's watch this. And, um, Yeah, it's not super appropriate for kids, but they're like at a good age. Has it aged well? It has aged so well, Andrew. So we're, I think, like maybe eight or nine episodes in. We're in like two sessions in. It's fairly short.
Andrew Because they're 22 minute, right? It was a 30 minute block. I think that's right.
Everett I think that's right. They go pretty quick. It's fucking hilarious. It is like iconic one-liner humor. The actors are great. Jamie Presley. The cast is terrific. Eddie Steeples, Jason Lee, obviously, Jamie Presley, Ethan Supley, I think is how you pronounce his name, the big guy from Friday Night Lights. It's just perfect. And so I'm watching it with the kids, and I was like, this show is way better than I remember it being. And so that was my other thing for the week.
Andrew That's a good other thing because I remember watching the show because it was pre-streaming era and that was what was on television, so that's what was on. And being like, oh, this is funny. And I love Jason Lee. I think he's a really underutilized and underappreciated actor. I might start a binge.
Everett And also, Katie Presley. Yeah. Pretty hot. Jason Lee, professional skateboarder. Did you know this? Did know that. Professional skateboarder turned actor. Which I just think that's cool. Yeah. This dude was just making skate videos and got famous.
Andrew Yeah, Tony Hawk just competed in games.
Everett Do they have a master's division? How old is Tony Hawk? He's got to be 60.
Andrew He's in his fifties. I want to say, uh, but the kid, he was any, so I just, I, I was, it was after a race probably two, three weeks ago, there was some X game skateboarding on, uh, and they were dropping into half pipes and Tony Hawk just like walks up onto the top of the half pipe. And the announcers are like, wait, he's not just here to hang out. And he hadn't skated in a half pipe in over 20 years, like in the X Games. And there were kids competing in that event who weren't alive the last time Tony Hawk skated. That's amazing. At the X Games. it was cool. And, you know, Tony Hawk somehow at his age is still like ripping it up. And I mean, I think he skateboards every day. I think that's all he does. He just, yeah. You know, it, I'm much younger than Tony Hawk. And I would not ever take that risk of like launching myself 30 feet into the air.
Everett I mean, skateboarders are the toughest people on earth, dude. I mean, I believe that.
Andrew Yeah, but he skated well. He went out and he did his run. He did not win. A 13-year-old won. It was really cool to see Tony Hawk giving bones to a kid who has never seen Tony Hawk. It wasn't alive to see Tony Hawk skate. Yeah, right.
Everett Never seen Tony Hawk compete. Hey, you guys, thanks for joining us for this episode of 40 in 20, the Watch Clicker podcast. Do me a favor. Go to our website. It's watchclicker.com.
