Professional Experience

• Led a team of 2-4 developers on architecture, design and implementation of distributed streaming data systems across multiple platforms. The code is used all over the world for a wide variety of production systems as well as research and development. Coded in Java, Python, C++ and LabVIEW on OSX, Linux, Solaris and Windows.
  
• Co-PI on a 900k NSF software grant.
• Lead a transition to open source, both within our group and the larger collaboration.
• Lead efforts in agile development, test-driven coding and peer code review.
• Designed, purchased, installed and managed all aspects of development infrastructure, from servers to RAID chassis to networking gear to software.
• Lead hardware and software deployments to two ecological reserves, from sensors to data acquisition systems, custom software and field installations.
  

• Architected and led and open-source C++ software programming team for distributed control of structural control systems and numerical simulations. As an agile project, it had a progress blog, design documentation in the public subversion archive with the code, test-driven development and complex regression tests baked into the code. Based around OpenSSL and STL, it cross-compiled natively on OSX, POSIX Unices, Windows/MSVC and Windows/Cygwin, complete with loading of dynamic libraries, platform threading abstraction and automatic byte ordering.
  
• Architected and lead a team of developers on the streaming data and telepresence systems, ranging from data aquisition code in LabVIEW to distributed development in Java.
  
• Managed the hiring and supervision of contractors, students and developers.
  
• Selected, purchased, installed and programmed a wide variety of hardware, from complex sensors requiring signal processing to network video servers, WAN simulators, networking gear, servo and stepper motors.
  

• As part of the Globus grid computing project, I worked on the National Earthquake Engineering and Simulation Grid (NEESGrid) project.
• I was responsible for data acquistion, control systems, video and audio integration, capture, streaming, etc. Coding in C, Java, LabVIEW (for Linux, Win32, OS X) and more.
  

• Designed and implemented multithreaded, large scale cache code on IRIX, Linux and Solaris using TCP/IP and POSIX threads in C. This code used 11TB of disk as a cache/HFS for the 1.5PB Adic-brand tape robot.
• As part of the data handling team, responsible for selection, evaluation installation and administration of servers, fibre channel RAID systems, tape robots, workstations and network equipment.
• The code was production and critical, so duties also included pager rotation and user support.
• Miscellaneous support coding in PHP, Perl and C shell.
• System administration as required, on Irix, Linux, Solaris, and OS/2.
  

• Researched the use of wavelet-domain convolution in the synthesis and localization of audio and wrote code to implement the ideas.
• Designed and built a Virtual Reality facility for immersive and projective visualization.
• Designed and implemented a virtual reality simulation system (Flatland) using C++, sockets, RPC, OpenGL, and pthreads. System portable between most Unix variants and Windows.
• Built a Linux-based parallel processing cluster running MPI.
• Did research in parallel algorithms using MPI and message passing, for mixed-mode programs that extract maximum performance from clusters of SMP machines.

• Designed and implemented cross-platform control, data acquisition and analysis systems for automated experiments on the Bonse-Hart and 5 meter pinhole instruments using Windows, Macintosh and MS-DOS systems in LabView and C/C++.
  
• Investigated enhanced imaging techniques for high-resolution x-ray and neutron radiography.
• Held Department of Energy `L' security clearance as well as Radiation Worker certifications from Sandia Labs, Los Alamos National Lab and the University of New Mexico.

• Designed and implemented a LabView-based control and data acquisition system for a ultra-high-vacuum chamber, including an RF quadrapole mass spectrometer and x-ray photoelectron spectrometer instruments.

• Programming and network administration on a PC and Unix network. TCP/IP and SMB, Windows, SCO OpenDesktop Unix. Programmed in C for Windows, minor work in Visual Basic and Awk.
  
• System administration on a IBM System/36 and AS/400.

• Wrote a graphical data acquisition and analysis package in mixed C and 80x86 assembly language. Features include virtual memory, microsecond-precision timing, GUI-based data analysis, hardware and software copy protection, a hardware/software interface to a competing product, and context sensitive on-line help.
• Design and programming assistance for the corresponding embedded Z80-based hardware.
